I'm going on a six day ride through Southern and Central California on 04/30/06. I've put together a nice ride starting in Julian, CA. riding up to Monterey, CA.

I plan to ride Mt. Palomar, San Gabriel Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains and overnight in Idyllwild, CA located in the San Jacinto Mountains.

I plan on riding HWY1 up the coast through San Luis Obispo and finally Monterey, CA.

Has anyone ever ridden up the coast of California..? I’m thinking of riding some inland roads north of Santa Barbara, CA. but not sure which roads to pick.

Thanks. :045:

Hey Mike!

Hello from Woodland Hills, California. I rode some beautiful roads here in SOCAL today - especially Route 33 North out of Ventura. I only went a little past Ojai today, but I know this majestic road wall - take it all the way North from Ventura up to route 46. Take 46 West through San Luis Obispo wine country all the way to the Pacific Ocean, then turn North and take Hiway 1 to Monterey. You won't regret it - beautiful ride!

Oddly Bob I was just thinking how the lovely sculptured lines of the RS made the GS look like a mobile hat stand!

also has an incredible morotcycle museum, privately owned, world renowned. I forget the name of the owner, but if you're near there, it's worth it.
That pretty white K bike would look great with some custom made stickers that say "Final Edition", methinks.
Yeah, too bad about the crappy California weather, and the lackluster views!
Keep on having a blast. Please send us a photo of the karaoke guy wearing chaps!

I was at that very same Danish bakery six weeks ago. I was driving back from my sister's house in Santa Barbara and made a point of stopping there.
So much good stuff it's hard to know what to choose.:eusa_clap:

The picture was taken about 2001 but I was there again this past summer. Just as good as ever and just as bad for me but we only live once.

I've been there several times over the years and there has always been a line out the door. Maybe just bad timing on my part. They sell this hard, round crunchy Cinnamon and sugar pastry, of which I can't remember the name.
Tastes good though.

No offense meant Harry:058: (and I know none taken) but I really do have a "thing" for the 1200RS. I just love the styling and the attitude. One would be just the ticket for a run accross the "limit free" Autobahns of Germany. I'm planning a trip to the Hartz mountains in July so maybe I should just get on and hunt down a good one!
Great pic's, glad you're both enjoying the trip. Lucky sods.

You know Si, I have to agree with you on the KRS. I had one identical to Mike's prior to the GS, and it too was a beauty.

That said, after covering a little over 1800 miles in the last 6 days, I am very happy with my decision to swap it for the GS. I found that every morning I was looking forward to the day's ride as much or more than the day before. The GS is the most comfortable and capable all around bike I've ever owned. As I get closer to 60, I'm finding that a comfortable seating position is a bit of a priority. Adding the Corbin seat and a sheepskin from Alaska Leather made consecutive 8 hour days a breeze. From tight twisty mountain roads, to boring interstates, the bike just plain works. It has enough power to keep up with the K bike till we cross about 125, and I don't need to be doing that very often anymore.

The only downside I've found so far is in windy conditions. Where the K bike just seems to cut through the wind, the GS wants to wander about. I don't know if its a lighter front end, the big hunk of plastic on the front, the big boxy Jesse bags, or some combination of all three, but cross winds, and passing semi trucks requires a bit of attention. Maybe a set of Ohlins will help a bit, but I suspect its just the nature of the beast.

Oh, and it also will hold an unlimited number of hats, carefully placed of course....

Do stop sitting on the fence, please ,and tell us what you really think of the GS!
Actually, I 100% agree with you. Comfort is everything. Time was I would have forgiven a cramped, makes you ache riding position in order to enjoy the performance/handling of a sporty machine. No longer. My first thought when viewing a new bike used to be "I wonder if Yoshimura makes a cam for this one?" now it's "I wonder if Corbin makes a seat for this one?"
Anyway, with the march of technology, ordinary street bikes now (like my little 850R) handle and perform like top notch sportsters of only a few years ago.
In fairness the 850 suits most of my needs very nicely, it's only failing is day long high speed stints on Motorways. I used to aviod these like the plague but just lately seem to have to do more of them to get to where the really interesting riding lays.
Wish I could afford a hatstand, sounds like it could be the answer!
Feel free to chime in here Mike and extoll the (doubtless) many virtues of the KRS.
Si
