Has anybody had to do this on a 4 valve head BMW? It's de regueur for an airhead, buit I don't see it listed in oilhead maintenence schedules. Today I heard from a Seattle pal that a rider up there had to have his done at around 20K, and I suggested that something was amiss. Anybody have any input on this?

Will, Dont think its listed in an maintenance schedule, cause BMW does not like to admit it, but have heard of it commonly done as early as the mileage you've indicated. More typically another 10k or so later. Also, problems generally more common on RTs, as I recall. Pretty big job.

Plenty of people have done it, or had it done for them, although it's not listed in the maintenance schedule. I read somewhere that the unofficial recommendation from BMW is to get them lubed every 40K miles. It's a pain in the ass to do. This thread (http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/669316/an/0/page/0#Post669316) shows why: half the bike has to come apart.

Will, I had 20 grand on my 03 RR, was bored one weekend and did a spline lube for giggles. The Capt is right, take a look a the motor, see where the tranny bolts on? EVERYTHING aft of that comes off. The rear of the engine is supported on blocks and you take it all apart. It was fun, really!
Took me all day to pull it a part lube it..did'nt need it, but hey it was apart, and put it all back together. I did'nt even have any parts left over.:eusa_clap: I've done it a number of times on the airheads and was comfortable doing the job. If you are a compent wrench, have the pertinent technical data, you can do it. I've come to the conculsion, if the factory doesn't lube well enough or at all, and you are unlucky enough to buy the bike your gonna have a problem. It does seem the RT's suffer the most, like when the LT's were having the final drive failures.
