Watched that several times last season, THEN had a chance to "dissect" that lap with Freddie Spencer. Freddie's take on it was that Gibernau threw away his chances with his line selection going into that last turn and that Rossi did exactly what he was supposed to do. Freddie said that in a situation like that, you don't go for the fastest line, you go for protecting your own position and that ESPECIALLY since he and Rossi had exchanged positions in that same turn a lap or two earlier, he just should have used his head, taken an inside line and accelerated out of it towards the outside of the track. What a thrill to watch!
