This is a scan of an old pic of a really cool little Triumph.
It's a 1959 Triumph Trophy 650cc, single carb engine, pre-unit (engine & tranny are separate...like a new Harley!). It belongs to photog friend of the Cafe', Paul Valentine. He's owned it since the early/mid 80s.

It is a mild "period custom" with non-factory paint, exhaust, seat, shocks, front fender & fork boots The forks look in this pic like they've been extended but they haven't.

An unusual thing about it is the "automatic" clutch. See the thingy atop the tranny in the 11:00 o'clock position to the peg rubber? It's a clever & simple device that disengages & reengages the clutch when you shift gears as normal with the foot shift. It was an option that had a poor reputation & limited acceptance, most were removed. Apparently they required a lot of adjustments and a slow, deliberate shift. Ironically, they were also popular with some drag racers who banged hell out of them, but accepted the maintenance & frequent parts replacements. I've ridden the bike a few times and played with the auto-shift. OK I guess but it really feels odd, and you just have to *make* yourself not pull the clutch lever.
They were called the "Quick Shift" or "Slick Shift" or something like that...anyone remember?

No, it is not for sale! I have asked several times and am at the top of the "first refusal" list, but I'm not counting on anything. Just hopeful!

To me, this bike just looks so...right. I'd have to change the mufflers, fork rubbers & shocks to something more "correct", but I'd love to have it.

Now Si, don't you think this little Trumpet would just be delightful with a nice hard-tail?
NOT!!

That is one good looking bike. i would have to ditch that seat, and do a couple minor ,personal touches, but i could be forced to ride that...

Si, Dave, anybody, Would cocktail shakers be totally wrong in the exhaust dept for this bike?

Oh, that's easy! "Cocktail shakers" have and will always be totally wrong...so there!
But if you mean were they available in 1959, yes they were.

Dave, it was called the Slick Shift. It was popular among Moto Cross ("Scrambles" then) riders. You may remember the startline procedure where the riders sat, engines running but with their left hands raised to ensure they were in neutral? Well, the Triumph boys could sit in first gear with their hands up and first twitch of the starters flag they dumped the clutch by letting go of the gear lever. Other than that I don't think it earned many fans and it was soon dropped.
I love that bike. It's sort of "Triumph 6T meets Harley Sportster". If Paul ever decides to sell it and you decide you don't want it after all, it's MINE! It would be just perfect to take to VMCC* meeting to piss off the purists.

Si.

* Vintage Motorcycle Club. An excellent bunch, but some of them get a little sniffy about non stock rides.

Sir Simon, you are a hoot!! I believe you would show up on something not politically correct, just to rattle their cage.

I love the way you talk...we can have a club!

In the Iron Curtain days, some Eastern block countries had world championship MX teams. Some actually drafted the best riders into the Army so they could be "properly" trained & conditioned for racing. Their training regimens were legendary and their cheating rivaled that of Smokey Yunick in NASCAR. Their MX bike makers were right on board.
One thing that CZ (I believe it was CZ) did was to intentionally design the clutch cable & release mechanism so the cable ran in a loop alongside the primary case. If you pulled on the cable housing it would disengage the clutch.
Before the live-engine start, riders would pull the clutch lever and put it in low gear. Then they would put their knee inside the cable loop, with their "clutch hand" on their helmet as required. When the flag dropped they moved their knee in and it was off to the races!
There was also a bit of "creativity" in our S. Texas Scrambles Wars in the 70's!

Smokey didn't cheat! He perfected the art of using every rule, and lack of specific rule, to his advantage.

My favorite was the 2" fuel line.

Was it Smokey that filled up His Roll bar/cage with fuel? Or was that King Richard?

Smokey never let the rules get in the way of a good racecar.

In the immortal words of Denis Manning at a Bonneville awards dinner, as he stood before the crowd, twisting & bending an SCTA rule book:
"There is a reason they print rule books as paper-back rather than hard-back."
Some have built their lives around that principle. Or so I hear...:bandit:

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

Now we're talking!!! I LOVE THIS BIKE!!! Not for nothing...the pre-unit oil tanks were the most sexiest tanks that Triumph ever produced. I wish they kept them on the unit construction bikes. This red beast is real tasty!
