What you saw there were craftsmen hand building class leading motorcycles. Remember, please, that when that was filmed a young Japanese chap called Honda was only just taking his first faltering steps in the world of motorcycle production, fitting proprietary engines into bicycle frames. High technology would come, but it was - at that time - still a long way off.

Si (:))

Proprietary? I thought they were war-surplus generator engines of some such?

And yes, I had one of those hand-crafted oil dispensers...

Proprietary just means made by someone else! Hey! Are you pulling my chain? God damnit, I've taken the bait like a big, silly, fish! :)

# 1946 Soichiro Honda sells his piston-ring business. Japan is struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy, after having been bombed flat at the end of WWII. Honda realizes the need for affordable transportation and begins grafting war-surplus two-stroke motors onto bicycles. (The motors had originally been intended for use on portable generators for military radios.)

If they weren't made by Honda they were proprietary, whether designed for motorcycle use or not.

I have some letters from My Dad, to His Dad, from Occupied Japan. After, Iwo Jima, then War Crimes Trials at Chichi Jima, Dad was assigned to the Japanese Mainland . He wrote several letters to His Dad, describing the people, and the country. In one letter He describes the vehicles in use, and He was particularly impressed by the "tiny little Trucks, half the size We use, of unusually high quality, It is called a Daihatsu".
