Back in the '80s I went to the same church as a guy who'd been booted out of the Amish church. I asked him "Why?" and he smiled sheepishly and said "I bought a car." Said he'd managed to round up $50 and bought a clunker in town without anyone knowing about it, hid it in the woods, and late on Saturday night he'd slip out the back, change into civilian clothes and go to town for some fun. Eventually his parents and the church leaders found out about is wickedness and gave him an ultimatum. He chose the car or at least what the car represented.
