:embarassed: I got caught by an edge trap today. Was doing about 20 went to park at the Arizona Trialthon( I was going to be a MotoRider). Going down the road, swung right to be able to swing left and back in. 3 inch lip, took the front wheel hard left, bike goes down to the right. I catch my ribcage on the curb, bounce my helmet off the sidewalk. I stop sliding, bounce up.
3 other riders run over, I'm bending down to pick up the bike. They tell me We'll get the bike are you OK? I think I bruised my ribs, and I have a really nice bruise on my right hip. Hurts a little to breathe.
I'll live.
The bike faired OK:
Little scuff on the fairing, a friend with a paintshop can take care of this
Valve cover scuff, I'll replace that.
It bke a little of the valve cover on top also, where the bike hit the curb.
The bag took the brunt of it:
I know there's a way to buff it out, if someone could tell me how, I'd appreciate it.
The front wheel has a little scuff I'll buff and paint, I just don't know the paint code.
All in all I'm more embarrassed than anything. Figure I'd tell you before Bob did. I'm hoping to make the ERC tommorow, I really need it now!:)
The 50 mile ride home was a little uncomfortable. I have 3 fingers of Bourbon going and some ibrophoen in me so its all good.
You all be careful out there.
Roger
Sorry about the get off. Glad you are basically O.K. Hope you can do the ERC. Take care and heal well.

Glad you're ok. The bike can be fixed. As you say, it's more embarrassing than anything else.
Cheers, Steve
Rog,
Glad you're ok. I took a pass on the Ironman because the GS is so new to me, and I haven't had a passenger on a bike in years. All in all it looks like the ST didn't take too big of a hit.
You might want to get those ribs checked, though I don't think there's much to do for a cracked rib. I've got meetings for most of the day tomorrow, so I'll miss the ERC. You guys have a good time.

Rog,
Fortunately, it sounds like the whole thing will hurt your wallet more than anything else, and not too badly. Glad you are OK. Sounds like briused ribs. You may have a fractured rib or two, but probably not. Most of the time there is little to do for injured ribs other than tincture of time.
Glad you had a good helmet on. Even Low speed crashes can kill someone when the same crash with a decent helmet makes for getting up and cussing about broken bike parts.
Quick recovery and back at it. Glad you are OK.

Hey Roger,
It could have been lots worse. The valve cover scrape looks cool, like you used it instead of a knee slider. Last year in the Nevada desert on my XR 400, I was straddling a couple of foot deep 4X4 hardened tracks, and after a few miles, decided to ride somewhere else rather than this tedious place. I went into the rut fine but it was impossible to ride out of it, so SLAMMMM! Broken pinky, thumb, mini concussion/bell ringer and I sat there for a minute feeling mighty stupid. Big mistake, but I thought... no, I didn't think. Height differences in our path are THE ENEMY. More padding/armor, please.
I rode the rest of the 4 day weekend and the riding actually helped pump blood into my blackened digits, making them all pink and normal looking again, but oncce home, the pain was a 6 month daily reminder of uneven surface horror.
Onward, Rog!
Roger
Sorry about the crash, and thankful it wasn't worse.
It'll be interesting to hear if you're able to restore that bag cover.
Take it easy till you're sure those ribs aren't broke.
Bob
Those little scratches are called "COMBAT METALS" :icon_redface: It would be a disgrace to ride without them. The ribs -that’s another story! Six weeks and you will feel great. Dr Bill -doctor of nothing!
Get well fast.

I'm with you - I crashed on Friday, going home from work. A windy day Friday, a small trash can had blown onto a busy, 45mph roadway, just over a rise. First car stopped dead in rush hour traffic, another tagged her, the car in front of me barely missed car #2, and I was a few feet short of being able to stop in time, tires & brakes at their limit. I hit the Lexus in front of me HARD, trying to miss the metal light pole to my left, I attempted to squeeze between the left side of the car & the curb. Not enough room, so at about 20 MPH my right radiator & handlebar lever caught the left rear of the car. Up and over I go, bike goes down on the curb, and I (apparently - I don't recall practicing this) do a forward flip with a half twist, landing on my feet, facing my downed bike, crunched car fender, and non-existent taillight. 6 other vehicles were involved, but I was not tagged from behind (no smarty comments, Bob :)).
After a boring evening in the ER, I have 2 broken fingers on my right hand, big bruise on my inner thigh, and general soreness/stiffness. Who's a lucky humanoid now (relatively speaking)? My carbon fiber reinforced Dainese boots & gloves, Kushitani jacket, and AGV TiTech helmet didn't even touch the ground (or anything else). I've already priced my parts online (for my KTM), and I'm way over $1000 (my deductable). I could care less - I'm OK, and bike parts will be for sale much longer than parts for me.
Unfortunately, I have proven the worriesome theorem that says "it's not if you go down, it's WHEN". Gladly, my learned abilities as a dirt rider and ex-racer taught me not only avoidance of the deadliest bits, but also how to fall. That's all the practice I require. No, really.

Roger & Collyers -
Sure hate to hear you guys both bit the weenie, but at least it was a (relatively) small one.
Sympathy?...not much. Empathy?...a hell of a lot from one who has been your brother in crashiness many times through the years. The last time was 5 years ago with 35 MPH median hit and face plant in the brick pavers, followed immediately by my 50R coming down and running over me. My fault all the way...with mitigating circumstances which never really matter much.
Sounds like the injuries are minor to both of you, not too bad to the bikes, and you both have a good attitude about it.
After you "replay the tapes" a few more times I hope you'll write a more detailed description of what happened, analyze it completely, and tell us what you could have done to avoid it or mitigate it.
Maybe some of your bros will learn how to avoid having the same thing or something similar happen. I know it helped me to do that 5 years ago and my buddies all said they learned from it too. I know I did.
Bugger...we say that now in Texas too DJ, after getting know you!

Collyers...geees what a bugger!...glad your ok....so...are the broken fingers on the bottom wiping hand?...
as a matter of fact...... I'm ambidextrous now, thankyouverymuch.
So I assume DJ has experience with this inconvenience???
Dave - but you have to say it like this: buggah...BUGGAH...BUGGAH!
I've replayed the acccident inumerable times, and it all boils down to getting caught in the rush hour pace, and not leaving enough room for error. Error occurred, error incurred. I'm just lucky I don't have to pay the ultimate price.
Lesson: leave more room than necessary, and keep your riding paranoia WFO. You never know when you'll need it.
And keep practicing your "ashardaspossible" panic stops. Mine kept me from being installed as a trunk ornament.
Note the folded back radiator & dented exhaust header. See the pointy orange plastic bit (directly south of the "KTM" on the seat)?
Once I impacted the car, it squished and pointed upwards, just as I was ejecting from the cockpit.
That tore a hole in my pants, and made a bruise on my inner thigh the size of a grapefruit.
I was 1 mile from home, and rode it while antifreeze blew from the radiator!!!
[/URL]
Note the black smear on the trunk (Dainese leather gloves work GOOOOOOOOOOD).
Doesn't look like much, but my little radiator & right leg did most of the damage to the bumper & tailllight (I have red plastic stuck in my pants).
15mph bumper, too.

Other lesson? Always carry a digital camera. ALWAYS.

:003: Collyer said "tagged from behind".... he he, he he.
Roger - you missed a long. hard day of riding. If I had it to do over again, I would have had someone hit me in the ribs with a bat this morning and gone home to drink some bourbon!
Seriously - hope you are okay - look forward to having you in the ERC tomorrow and yes, limited space manuvers are one of the skills we will practice.
All of my skills were put to the test several times during the event today - had both the mirrors on the RT knocked off (thank goodness for safety tether steel wires...). Will provide a full account in the fullness of time - have to rest up, have two MSF classes to teach tomorrow!
Take care - and remember, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...

So I take it that in Texas you aren't allowed to 'lane split' or 'lane share'? It surely makes riding in heavy traffic more bearable. There are very few accidents relating to this as far as I know. Occasionally one hears about the 'cager' who wants to open his door and smack the biker off his bike, but that would be an expensive lesson for both, especially the car driver.
Heal fast and I'm glad you're not badly harmed! One time I had a bad cold and turns out I broke some ribs (again) off roading. There is nothing quite as pointed as coughing and sneezing with freshly broken ribs!

True, lane splitting is verboten in the Republic of Texas. Good thing, too, as we own the majority of both cell-talking Yukon/Suburban/Escalade drivers AND shotguns-in-the-back-window angry-at-civilization pick up truck drivers.
I wouldn't lane split here if my life depended on it (when I lived in LA for 10 yrs, I got good at it). [Pun intended]
All's well that ends well, OK.... all's well that ENDS.
Bob, you know how to get 4 Scottsdale men on one bar stool?
turn it over.
Collyer
Glad it wasn't worse.
Don't 2nd guess your self about not leaving enough room for error, especially in rush hour traffic. Around here, if you leave enough room for saftey, some 4 wheeler immediately moves into that space, leaving you with even less space. I'm sure it's the same everywhere.
Sounds like you did all you could, under the circumstances.
Sounds like both of you guys will be good to go shortly.

So sorry to hear of your multiple misfortures. And so glad neither was any worse.
On my way in this morning, on the new Johns Island bridge, I backed away from a VW Bug (newstyle) when I noticed the person in the passenger seat spoon feeding the driver what appeared to be yogurt. Holy crap what a bunch of freakin' idiots. Shortly thereafter, while still on the bridge, the VW swerved to the right and there on the roadway was a big bale of pinestraw. Since I had backed off a bit, I had no trouble avoiding the obstacle.
Man! You gotta be careful out there.

Thanks all...hey Col...you did'nt have to crash to make feel better:)
Made the ERC today, a little ironic, I crash the day before training.
The ribs are sore, but I'm riding. My buddy that does custom paint is coming over to look at the bike.
WW, great idea on the bag...I'm gonna do it!
Shi# happens, and well, I guess I was due. I'll live' the bike is'nt to bad, so its all good.
You all be careful...Roger

what is it about ERC's?
I took one two weeks ago... went great, one of the instructors asked me if I'd considered being a rider coach! Monday, ride to work... drop bike in parking lot. in over a year and ~13000 miles with the R, it's the first time I've ever done that. felt like a total idiot... and DAMN those are heavy bikes!
Glad to hear that the crashers are safe and sound! hope y'all stay that way.

You might not be able to split lane or want to split lane outside of California, but it always help to ride on the far sides of the lane and plan on splitting just in case something like this happen.
