It really does Andy! I can see myself switching to one of these for my daily rider in the next few years. Once they get one in at MMS, I'll be stopping in to test ride the bugger. The allure of the inline three is a hard one to beat...

Nice. And aimed right at the heart of the F800GS.
Now, will Triumph follow with their version of the F800ST? That would make an interesting bike.

Look at that pretty 3 into 1 header merge on the red one...sweet! Doesn't look "factory" at all.

Yes! Lots of people discovering or re-discovering the 750-900 mid class these days.
And many are watching this bike real closely!

They look good to me, but what do I know? Andy, will they be at the NEC? Not to be missed I feel..

Guys, the "Tiger 800" (relax, Dave, the Tiger Cub name seems to have passed quietly into the history books..) will be launched at the British Motorcycle Show at the end of next month. Your "reporters" will be there, cameras at the ready :webers:

Sir Si...don't get me wrong, I love Triumph Cubs!
I just felt to call the new Dirty-Triple a "Cub" would be an illogical dis-service to both bikes. Just my opinion.
I bought one like this for my son when he was 14 and going to all the national rallies with me...a blue & silver "Mountain Cub" with high-pipe & "pedestrian-slicer".

They even short-tracked the little 200's!

I think this one was built by Jack Wilson while Gary Nixon was riding for him.

They even went to Bonneville! Jack & the boys put a hot Cubby motor in the "Texas Ceegar" and Rusty Bradley rode it to over 130 MPH! This is a different 'liner from someone else.

They also raced Speedway! Years ago I almost bought a Speedway Cub, I don't know what I thought I was going to do with it, it was just "cute"! And it was setup to run clock-wise rather than the usual counter-clockwise. Some Speedway association made their novices run the track backwards...I don't know what that was supposed to teach them?

Thanks Dave, I had no idea that you guys raced Cubs. Come to think of it, I should have known - you'll race anything! Over here the Cub's biggest claim to competition fame is that it was the first machine raced by one William Joseph Dunlop, who went on to become quite a success..

Very nice. It looks like they didn't include the self canceling turn signals. I'm quite interested in the XC version.
I'm waiting for it to show up at the dealers, too. I can see it as a replacement for one or more of my current bikes. The seat height of 31.9" is within my range. :)

Thanks Andy. It seems ages since the "675cc Tiger Cub" was first talked about. So long, in fact, that I had almost begun to doubt we'd ever see it. I assumed it had become a casualty of cost cutting.. Now it seems they simply took their time in order to "get it right". Why did I doubt St John and his boys? I should have known better!
I suspect we'll be spending a long time on the Triumph stand at the NEC. Hooray!

Now that I've ridden a Street Triple, I'm pretty sure the 800 Tiger will be pretty incredible. I'll be sure to test ride it as soon as I can! I doubt Hobbes will be traded, sold into slavery or otherwise retired any time soon. Still, the thought of a smaller, lighter bike is not without allure. The 1050 engine is massive overkill for most of the roads I ride, but I find I love the seating position. It's wonderful for spotting potential problems long before you're near them!

It sounds like the new Triumph 800 series is just crying for roadster & sport touring models...with appropriate tuning tweaks.
Will we ever have enough "adventure" bikes?

Bill, I read the test and the engine IS detuned. To be honest I'd want it detuned a bit from the 675's punch if I was going to ride a dirt road. I've ridden a 675 Street Triple and it's a total hoon bike, you would be roosting all the damn time in the dirt. I'm not saying that wouldn't be fun but it could cause the "fall down and go boom" bug to bite often.
Did you see the seat height? 31.9 with a hair over 3.4 of an inch in adjustment.....that's cool, even I can flat foot it :)
Looks like a hit to me.
Now for the 64,000$ question. Would I buy one? Sure, if I hit the lottery, but I haven't. I need a do it all bike and am leaning to a 1200GS or an R. Add a KLR and I'm good. It sucks to be poor.

I caught that, Roger. But the author, IMO, thought they went a bit too far into the detune/ slow to rev state.
jamming
11-13-2010, 12:41 PM
The slow to rev is due to large part from their decsion to keep the bore and "stroke" the motor. Sometimes Physics is your friend sometimes not.
There's a reason they did what they did. The bore and stroke of the 675 engine is 2.91 X 2.06 inches ( 74.0 X 52.3 MM ) so its already way over square ( bore exceeds stroke ) so I'm betting there ain't a lot of room between the cylinder liners. I know for a fact there an't a lot on the 1050 motor so to keep the narrowness of the triple they had one way to....down. Look at this way, take a look at any 250 CC dirt bike cylinder..pretty big around around huh? You have 3 of those minius a bit inline and the triple IS a narrow motor. Takes a lot longer to move that slug up and down in the cylinder in relative time. Of course this is my opinion only and what the hell do I know. There may be more reasons I'm not privy too.

Rog, I think you're bang on the button. The "quick and dirty" way for Triumph to create the new model would have been to create what we were all expecting: The 675 Cub. That they didn't go that route would suggest that you were correct in saying the 675 would be a real handful off road.
Creating a brand new engine from scratch is vastly expensive, especially if the desired results can be obtained by a little tweaking of the existing unit. The "long stroke" (relatively speaking) formula has worked well enough for Triumph so far.
Will the 800 Tiger find a market? Triumph plainly think so!
DarthRider
11-15-2010, 09:18 AM
As a general rule, a long-stroke motor vs the same motor in a short-stroke version will not only be slower to rev but produce more torque.
The classic "hi-rev / horsepower" configuration vs "lo-rev / torque" configuration.
It's not at all that simple of course and I'm no engineer, but I wonder if the reviewers comments had more to do with his expectations than a failure on Triumph's part to build a "proper triple" for this bike? They have been at it a while.
That's why I think/hope roadster & sport touring versions could be in the offing at some point, each with it's own appropriate state of tune.
If I had Dean's money I'd buy one of each.
And a Rocket III.
And a Thruxton.
And a Street Triple.
And a Speed Triple.
And a Thunderbird.

Sounds like if you gear the new Tiger a bit lower it will be great. Nothing wrong with having to shift gears to keep in the sweet spot.

Too cool!
I know a certain Triumph-Ducati-Aprilia-Moto Guzzi dealer who must be foaming at the mouth over this.
He's wanted a touring BMW competitor for a long time and it looks as though he will get it...from good ol' Triumph. He even considered going after a BMW dealership a few years ago, but they were still trying to follow the silly single-marque thing, a la' Harley Davidson at that time.
He also smiled and said once that he really had enough grief in his life from Ducati without having to endure BMW as well!
