Just a reminder for this board, the west coast 2006 Torrey ride is sceduled for the May 14th (this is an edit, I had the weekends screwed up, May 14th is mothers day weekend, is this right Deano?)(Mother's Day) weekend this year. I know some on this board are not posting on R1150R.org, but some, including myself, are. Different boards, different purposes. I'd still like to see all of the western members of this board at Torrey, Utah (the Chuck Wagon motel). It'd be great to get some new bikes there. Just like I'm making a very strong effort to get down to the Texas ride in April.

If Dallara's ride thread on the other board has not been deleted, I'll remind people over there the ride is on. Its all good!

Thanks to Killer, I fixed this. Otherwise, I think I'd have been a week late!

:)

Rob & Dean-O,
What usually goes on at a rally? How long does this one last? and so on.

I'm a fairly new rider...and if I choose to attend...this will be my first. Any info would be appreciated.

Abhijeet,
As a new friend (thanks to you I can again login to the board) I would suggest preparing not only your bike, butt yourself as well.

There are numerous ways one can prepare themselves for, as in your case, a 3,600 + mile ride. The 'ol way was to have a friend beat you in the butt with a used 2x4 (defination of used; nails are bent and have rusted) three times a day for two months prior to your ride. This gives you adaquate time for surgery and recovery prior to your trip.
OR
Or you can be a wuss (I am) and purchase the very best replacement seat made for your bike. The rest of the ride will be icing on the cake.

See you there ! Lewis :)

It is a 'ride' more than a Rally.

You arrive/ ride in, meet, talk, eat, some decide to ride this way, others that way. Meet, eat, talk, ride some more, go home - or variations of that. All with others who have something in common. Informal, relaxed. Some ride with buddies, others alone. Some stay at the motel, others, like me, camped for 1/2 price in a log cabin down the road a mile.

The ride to and from Torrey, for me, was worth just the trip (3400 mile round trip - TX, NM, CO, UT, AZ and back - 900 mile plus days etc). I did the Hwy 12 down to Bryce NP on the ride day - spectacular! Southern Utah and all the canyons one rides is an adventure not to be missed! You meet some neat persons. See country as it can only be seen from 2 wheels!

Acacia about nailed it on the head. The Torrey get together was on purpose not overly orginized, every one with out exception had a fantastic time, the riding in southern Utah is beyond belife. My cabin has two bedrooms and a fold out couch so three are welcome to help defray the costs. No one has asked for the other bedroom or hide a way bed yet.

Here are three diff threads on Dougs site with reports and pics from Torrey '05

Abhijeet,

Wisconsin would be a pretty good ride, most people get there on Thursday or Friday, ride Friday & Sat., & return home on Sunday. About the same scenario as Dallara's Texas Hill Country Spring Ride (the DTHCSR?). Torrey Utah is about 650 miles from LA, last year I took 1-1/2 days up & one long day (Sunday) back home. For Big D's ride, which is about 1,250 miles from LA, as time is limited, I'm planning to fly to San Antonio & rent a HD, the ride is only about 50 miles away. The dealer even has Sunday hours to return the bike. Not as much fun to ride, but it saves me at least 2 hard days on the interstate. I would think there is probably a HD dealer in Vegas that rents bikes. Torrey Utah is a nice 200 mile or so ride up from Vegas. Were I you, unless I had the time (& it would be fun) to ride from home, I'd consider a Vegas rental. Vegas would be a cheap flight. When you factor in meals, tires, motels & time, fly/rent isn't as expensive as it sounds. Maybe there's a BMW dealer in Vegas that rents too.

Hope to see you there,
Rob

Another possibility would be to fly into Salt Lake city. A ride from your home would be a great adventure and fantastic experience.

Hmmm....a ride to Torrey, UT sounds really great. I just have to add up and see if I have enough vacation days to do the ride. Flying in would be my second choice.

Thanks gents!

Riding would be my No. 1 choice as well. I'd bet it would be a trip you would always remeber. Hard to say that about another week of work. eh?

I only offered up the fly & rent as an alternative for the time challenged.

Looks to be about 1400 miles for me. It's prolly a long shot with classes and work, but I'll make it out either this year or next. :D

Is this the same gathering in Torrey as the BMWSportTouring.com group? That always occurs the weekend before Memorial Day which is May 20th this year and they (we) have the entire Chuck Wagon booked on a recurring basis as well as several other hotels in town. Everybody is welcome but it might be a bit crowded.

Right you are, I think I looked at an out of date calander. Mother's Day weekend is May 14th this year. Torrey ride is May 14th weekend. Sorry for the screw up.

I have arranged for the West Coast Torrey Bash to always be the weekend just before the RTSport touring get together, the weekend after the Sport touring bash is always the 49er rally in California.

Is anybody arriving early or leaving late? I live in Torrey* and like to give back country rides in my 4wd Tundra, if you haven't been to Cathedral Valley you have to do it at least once. I could also lead a GS ride out there, I have a KLR650 but a GS would work fine. I'll be around all week between the R and RT gatherings with the proviso that my mother is threatening to visit in May and I'm supposed to be looking for a job...

* I was left there by the SportTouring group one year.

Bob, I plan to arrive on Thursday. So you were left there after one of the RT gatherings...not bad. I have big time fallen in love with Utah and the Torrey area is fantastic. How are the winters up there ? Looking foward to meeting you in this comming May. Looking for a job....in Torrey??? Good Luck.

OK, this Torrey timing might be a challenge. I made my reservations the week after last years's Torrey event and Iron Butt ride home. Will have to chat with the Mrs. about "permission" to attend...

Good to see you alll over here!

How are the winters up there ? Looking for a job....in Torrey??? Good Luck. The winters in Torrey itself are cold and dry, the snow falls on the mountains all around but rarely makes it to Torrey. I have a weather station in my back ard that reports to Weather Underground
http://www.weatherunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KUTTORRE1
Unfortunately the rain guage is broken but there has been hardly any precip for a couple of months. There really isn't a good forecast for Torrey, most of them are for Bryce which has significantly colder and wetter weather.

A job in Torrey is impossible pretty much, I may have to be a weekend commuter for a while.

Hi, Bob it was nice to see you at the longstreet. I don't know how your tent didn't blow away. Was nice of Tom to put you up for one night. I hope to see you in Torrey. I'll be coming with the R1150R group. Perhaps you will let me buy you a burger at Brinks.

We're just over a month away from this years Bash and I thought I'd get things cranked up! :004:

Has anyone compiled a list yet or started getting a count of attendees? I know a lot of folks won't be sure until the last minute, but we could at least get an idea of who's planning or hoping to attend.

Has anyone got ideas on particular rides they'd like to do this year? :icon_arrow: I did Rt. 12 down to Brice with Brian and some others last year and had a great time! It was my only time in Utah, so I'd like to hear what others have to suggest.

:028: :028: How about a PHOENIX contengent this year? There seem to be enough central AZ folks on the board that it could make for a fun ride to Torry. Anybody?

Looking forward to it! :026:

It was my only time in Utah, so I'd like to hear what others have to suggest. You should head down through Capitol Reef to Hanksville then on to the Colorado River at Glen Canyon Reservoir and on to Blanding if you want to, it's a great, high speed, ride with very varied scenery. You could also do a loop using the Hite Ferry if it is running. Don't miss UT72 from Loa to I70, known to some as Sweeper Madness. If you want a big loop continue on I70 east to Green River then take 24 down to Hanksville and back to Torrey, most people just want to do 72 again, and again, and again...

I'm still sitting on the fence. On the one hand, I'm doing the Hill Country Ride with Dallara in a couple of weeks. Also, my wife (& mother of my children) says that of course I CAN go riding on Mother's Day weekend, I havn't figured out for sure what she means. We've only been married 16 years, so I'm still in the learning phase.

Last year I left Torrey at 6:30 am & braved herds of deer, & made it the 650 miles to LA by about 3:00 pm. I figure this year I would have to leave at 5:30 am, go a bit slower through deer country, not fool around, & try for LA by 1:00 pm & a happy mother's day. At least on Mother's Day the Vegas traffic might be lighter. I had to lane split about 100 miles (or so it seemed) last year.

My other problem is I will have about 5,000 mile on the tires when I would leave for Torrey. They still look great (at 4,000 miles) but I would feel like switching them for an extended ride. I guess a new set of tires isn't really a problem.

It looks like there are very few folks interested in Torrey this year. :icon_cry: Since I've already arranged for the time off, I think I'll spend a few days tooling around western Arizona and Southern California.
