Fellow Cafe members, the International Motorcycle Speed Trials by BUB will take place on the Bonneville Salt Flats Sept 3 thru 7. Chris (San Jose BMW) and I will be bringing a BMW R1200S to see how fast we can go. Chris and I will be riding the bike back to back, ie the founder of San Jose BMW and the current owner. I hired Chris in the mid '70 as our service manager and he now owns the place and has become one of the worlds formost tuners of Beemers. Can you tell that I am proud :) . We plan to bring several rear wheels with different diameter tires as we expect the bike to hit the rev limiter in 6th. One of the wheels will be equiped with the largest diameter tire that will fit as a larger diameter tire gives a larger circumference ie longer rolling distance per tire revolution.

Any of you all intrested are more than welcome to attend and even help. The experience is like nothing else you will ever experience, just ask Dave Howe,(Darthrider) as he has spent many a day on the salt. It looks like, as a participant :eusa_drool: :028: :eusa_clap: I will be able to get rooms for $19.95 per night for "The Motorcyclist Cafe contingent Crew Members"...notice the quotes. The bargin of the century for the hotel.

Dean,
An S in 6th gear running at redline. My goodness gracious. There must be a special feeling of blissful centeredness after an experience like that. And I bet that is what draws you back to it.

Have a good go and take pics. Good luck.

Dean, you and Chris are doing something very special. I wish I could be with you, I've done a little riding and a lot of crewing there and this will be among your finest memories for the rest of your life.
Go get 'em Grampa!

In most places you go as fast as you want go.
At Bonneville you go as fast as you can go.

Dean,

WOW! ... Can't think of a better way to spend a few days... great of you to mention it to the Cafe members... What an incredible deal on the hotel!

And, its only about 630 miles from here!

Would be fantastic to be amongst, and learn from, the two-wheeled pros of speed... and to lend a hand as needed.

Gotta check work and family commitments in that time slot... but I think its a potential for me.

Thanks Dean...

How many days on the salt?
Do I need sun glasses, easy chair, snacks, rest room privileges, should I ride my bike or do the 4 wheel thing?:eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :020:

Fantastic, as the time gets closer, will give more details and as I get them, will privately E Mail the room codes when recieved.

You definitely need sun glasses, a big hat, sun screen, I wear a long sleeve shirt. Bring your camera, for me the event is exausting as I non stop walk and talk. There is one of those quarter type car washes in town, your bike will have salt every where. There are no bleachers and shade is a premimum. In the run what you brung class, you get two runs, costs $100.00 and you have to either be a member of or join there the AMA..

More info as time passes.

So even a slo-poke like me on a stock R1150R could do a couple of runs?

Can't make it, but well wishes sent with those that can. My vacation time is already slotted for the ADV Rallye in Buena Vista. Maybe next year, that would be a great thing to be part of!

Mz Pam and I saw "The Worlds Fastest Indian" last night. Great movie but I don't think that it captured the grandure and awe that Bonneville sweeps over you. It did capture the friendliness of the other participants however. During the Bub motorcycle event, the pit area is at the halfway mark on the track, 10 miles long. They did a great job of capturing the sounds. Some of the streamliners start way before the starting point. Standing on the black line at the starting point was intresting when the top speed 'Busa made one of his over 240 MPH runs. You could see the bike as it headed away down the track shifting thru the gears trying to keep wheel spin to a minimum, remember the salt is like packed damp sand, when he hit top gear and pined the throttle, an overwhelming roar enveloped all and the bike disapeared in a cloud of brilliantly white salt spray thrown up by his wheel spin at over 200 MPH.

I saw is a few weeks ago and I'm going again tomorrow night with about ten mates who haven't seen it yet..I think it might be even better second time around.

Rear wheel spin is constant above 200 or so, cars & bikes. The harder the acceleration, the more wheelspin, even below 200 or so.
A very high powered engine with a vehcile with poor aero will at some point just stop accelerating and spin it's wheels.
