The bike has less than 4,000 miles, is showroom perfect, heated grips, wide 6" rear wheel, Ohlins and a full Remus. There is a deposite on My ST and it is supposed to be picked up Saturday at San Jose BMW, and the price is very right for the S.

I love the look of it. The paint is "in yer face" and I'm left ambiguous about it. The bike itself is very attractive otherwise. It'd be a blast to ride I expect.
Then I looked at the seat, and the handlebars, and how they related. Then I got an ache in my neck. Actually, that's been there a few weeks now.
For me, that'd make a great second bike, to be used like a Ducati. Sunny days only, enjoying the local hills and cafes. Hmm, that's not something I normally do, so I think this would need to be more'n that.
How does the riding position compare to a R100RS? Longer stretch?

I remember riding one back to back with my R1200ST in the Santa Cruz mountains. Found it to be comfortable, a little more agressive than my ST, very comfortable at 80 and above.
Box, the bike will be used in similar type of riding as you described, trips to the Bearwallow and general hooning up here in the mountain sweepers.

I rode one for 1500 miles in Europe a few years ago and it's riding position was not all that much different than my ST. The seat a little less padded though. The engine with it's 500 more rpm to redline was a dream. Much more versatile in the twisties I couldn't believe the difference though you might be spoiled now Dean that you have the cammer GS. I'm sure it's not an HP2Sport (my personal Nirvana Boxer) but it is great.

The red and white paint scheme was popular here, about a $500 option if I remember. I always thought the black was nicer though, boring old bastard that I am. I think you'll love it Dean, you can get together with Will and..

It makes My neck and back both hurt to look at it. At speed, the weight should be off the wrists, looks like it would be fun Springervill/Alpine Express Ride. Any chance on some Dyno numbers with Dougs Performance Pipe? I would think sugar content would make it a little buzzy.
I like the concept, but doubt I could ride it much. And, I'm with Si on the color.

Agonizing big time.....
with our economy seemingly ever spiriling down the crapper and all the pols aparently want to do is to raise taxes and spend more money kind of scared to spend the $.....I think I can get for $8K however........
Decisions, decisions.
Another point, found out yesterday that the bike has only.....2170 miles never raced and only ridden on several trips...
Dean, by all means - get the bike - if a new R1200GS, F650GS, and an old C cruser cant make you happy - GO FOR IT BIG TIME!

When I was trading my R1150R for the K1200S, I did consider the R1200S. I love the boxer, and the S is truly distinctive. I found the riding position to be that much more aggressive than the K1200S, and I didn't think the R1200S would give me the long distance enjoyment of the K1200S. After almost 3 years of riding the K1200S, I think I made the right choice. I still find my self pining for the R1200S from time to time though (not to mention the fjords, as well! *grin*).

Another whirlwind adventure. I am sitting in a little cafe in San Jose waiting to have breakfast with Tom the sales mgr at SJBMW.
Left home a little after noon Thursday for the 850 mile drive to Carson city, Nevada to check out the R1200S and to see if it was as stated. Arrived about 9 in the morn after spending the nite in Tonopah, Nv. The bike was every bit as I was told, show room perfect with 2182 miles. A quick blast confirmed that all was perfect and was plenty comfortable. We loaded it in the Tundra and talked until past noon.
Helli Kornton the previously owner is a long time BMW person that has worked with the US importer in all things pertaining to the GS series a master rider. He simply road the S into the back of the Tundra up a narrow ramp like it was nothing.

Left Nevada a little after noon to head to San Jose BMW taking I 80 over Donner Summet.
Arrived at SJBMW in time for them to unload the bike. The day before I had made arrangements for them to go thru the bike from stem to stern, change all fluids including brake fluid, any and all recalls and a new set of PR2's. This afternoon the 900 miles back to Show Low and tomorrow ride the beast to the Bear Wallow.
Times a wasting, lots more adventures to be tasted.

Simon, It replaces the ST....kind of. The ST was the best sport tourer that I have ever ridden with a emphasis on sport touring, the R12S seems to have a strong emphasis on the sport riding side. I road my ST several times over 900 miles in one day, I do not think the S will be so comfortable....but up here in the mountains....the perfect steed.
Got home at noon today (Sunday) after a whirlwind 2200 mile trip, totally exhausted but with an ear to ear grin, that bike is simply beautiful especially to a BMW Nut such as my self.
Unloaded it and tucked it safely in the MC B&B connected a Battery Tender Jr to the battery pigtail installed at San Jose.
Mz Pam raved about it when she first saw it in the back of the Tundra, thats a first for her as all motorcycles look the same in her eyes.
The pics have a lots more bytes???what ever they are as Will needs more resolution if he puts some of them in his Mag.
What can I say.....The lovely and ever so understanding Mz Pam.

After it was unloaded, road it a little bit just to the house so there would be room to turn it around, noticed two things right off the bat,
The turning radius is significantly larger than any BMW that I have ever ridden.
Will definitely require strict concentration and care to ride up and down the driveway from Hell, a big difference from the GS.
A big plus is that it is lighter than the GS.

I couldn't agree more. The ST in retrospect was the best all around bike that I have ever had. I don't think I would of ever sold it if it had cruise control and did not have the servo brakes. With a full Remus it dynoed 101 RWHP on a freshly calibrated dyno about one month ago.

Hi Elsie, where You been?
Dropped into Bentonville BMW today. The Canadian dollar is pretty strong these days and I jokingly said to Chrissy that I was going to buy another bike today. Man, I wish I had the balls to follow through. I salivated over this R1200C. I would change out the brown trim for black, and the paint needs some work, but at 14K miles and $6K, I was smitten:
http://prisoner.smugmug.com/Other/My-Smug-Mug/R1200C-2004/981713075_8sxcy-M.jpg
But after seeing Dean's beautiful R1200S, I thought a nice yellow bike to go with the yellow trim on my K12S might be the route to go. This 2001 R1100S caught my eye for only $5,750 asking price.
http://prisoner.smugmug.com/Other/My-Smug-Mug/R1100S-2001/981713174_9k3Fx-O.jpg
But then I thought, I loved my 1964 Mini. Perhaps I should think about a 1964 BMW R27 for only $7,500.

I road it again today for about 50 miles, no sore wrists this time. Hopefully this weekend a ride to the Bearwallow in Alpine. The bike does not have a license plate or registration yet...........:linzi:
My new camhead R1200GS seems torque-ier below 6,000 R's but the R12S pulls very well above 6-6.5 K and readily hits the rev limiter. Very comfortable at 80 and above, I like the pull as it passes thru 7K R's, a little rough on the hands and wrists going slow on my driveway.

If sore wrists remains a problem you can get some risers to modify the riding position. I remember Scott actually had handlebars on his S.

Dean, get a tank pad to lean your stomach on and that will take the weight off your wrists.:) I don't need the pad because my "tool shed" is dual purpose.:linzi:
Dean - on my 2000 R1100RS - it had a lean forward riding position- I learned to support my weight with my back mussels - took the weight off my wrist. I also used a throttle rock-which allowed the application of throttle with the palm of my hand. I did many 500 mile days on it and loved the bike - traded the bike for a 2005 F650GS, got bit in the ass by thumper talk.
I remember Scott actually had handlebars on his S. yes he had risers and a different handlebar - really looked like a bastard child!

The bike is absolutely on rails, There is a sweeper that I calibrate the cornering and road holding ability and stability of all my bikes. The CLC wobbles above 95, the R1150R, about 105-110, the ST and the 2010 R12GS is comfortable at 115-120, this R1200S with Ohlins was rock solid at 125 and asking for more. The only bike that would hint at a wobble is the CLC. I could easily touch down what ever would scrape first going even faster yet. The rev limiter cuts in at 130 in 4th at about 8500-8600 on the tach. That makes 3rd 4th and 5th perfect for these roads up here. The engine seems to be perfectly linear from just over 6K revs to the rev limiter. My guess is that the power feels about like Daves Speed Tripple. I was able to hit the rev limiter fairly easy in 6th, the speedo only has markings up to 160 and it looked like it was indicating between 163 and 165. The R1200S was as stable as a rock. In a hard cornering sweeper the steering is perfectly neutral taking no steering input to hold what ever line chosen even at an indicated 130-135. BTW, all of this at above 7,500 ft elevation.
For those of us that love the Boxer twin, the R1200S is damn near as good as it gets, I can only imagine what a HP2S is like in stock form and then get to play with San Jose's 145+ RWHP racing HP2S, one would need Wills wordsmithing ability to properly paint the picture.
At the Bear Wallow.

Damn, that thing is beautiful, all that out of an aircooled pushrod twin with driveshaft, unbeliveable.

Another point that I forgot to add is that I am not the least bit sore or anything from the ride and could of easily gone a lot further. I think that I am getting used to the riding position.
Did I say that I love the bike.

Not much pressure on the wrists at 163, I'd imagine.
:omg:
I like the paint job, Dean. But you've lost that element of surprise when the squids would say, "Just some old fart on a boxer". Boxer or no, that thing has the look of speed about it.
Hard to imagine a better fit than you, that bike and the part of the world you call home.
Congratulations...:eusa_clap::eusa_clap::eusa_clap ::eusa_clap::eusa_clap:
Oh yeah, looks like the tires got scrubbed in well!

Dean, I really like the new ride! Shame the ST had to be sold into slavery to make it happen though...

Dean, I really like my R1200S. Have the geometry finally tweaked to give it feather-light steering, but with stability when no inputs are made. I put the new Michelin Power Pure tires front and back for a Texas Hill Country run. Really like them. I can tell the difference in the weight--especially on the front. They stick quite well on all sorts of street surfaces and in the wet. Don't know how well they will do in the cold/wet; but my previous experience with Michelin has been good on that score. Will eventually switch out the rear for a Pilot Road 2 since I commute daily on mine. Thinking it will provide great combo of mileage and traction where it counts. But will wait until after running the Pure for a while to gauge the mileage.
Note : Had wanted to try the Pure on the track to see if they had better traction characteristics than the Pilot Power, but rear has already had to be plugged. Not a fan of the previous Michelin street or DOT race tires on the track. They have a tendency to provide excellent grip up to a point, then slip significantly for a bit of a scare. However, if eased down to max lean (read valve covers scraping) in a sweeper, they hold fine. Never had a problem with Pilot Powers or the Pilot Road 2 on the street though. Would not put the old Pilot Road on a donkey cart, but the PR2 is a good tire.
