I'm sure it's pretty easy, but this Cro Magnon type is having difficulty posting photos on the forum; anybody have any pointers for me aside from getting a new coloring book and a beer? Thanks for your continued kindness.

Are they linked images or to be uploaded from your machine? Do let me know. Thanks.

There are some of us on here (myself included) who do not know all the terminology, like linked images, in-line images, etc.
I think some basic instructions as follows would be a great help:
Posting images that are on our personal computer.
Posting images from SmugMug.
posting images from other image hosting services.
A subset of the SmugMug instructions could be how to post the "best of the best" of our personal images to the "Eye Candy" folder on Smugmug for the 1st page rotator.
This would be great to stay at the top of a FAQ section.

WW, first you have to plug in your puter............
Secondly, rt click on the image, the image has to be stored on a server somewhere and have a URL. After rt click on image scroll down and click on properties, move on over to the properties, copy the address in the properties. Go to where you are typing your post and left click on the little box that is yellow with the little mountain. a box will appear at the top of your screen. Paste the copied URL address in the box. Click OK and the address will appear where your cursor was in the text of your post. When you are finished with your post, click on reply and your pic should appear in the body of your post.
Or something like that.

Dean and Abhijeet, and Dangerous Dave! I'll try it. I'm trying do enclose pics from my area's riding roads that I have stored in my iPhoto album on my iMac G5. If I can do a complete major service on an 8 valve BMW, you'd think I could put this together. Wrong, wood burning grasshopper.

Forget most of what Dean told you. You are using a Mac, and as such, there is no right click. I'm sure that someone will be able to jump in shortly to assist.
I know it can be done with a Mac, I've done it before. However, it has been quite a while. If no one comes up with the answer, tonight (Friday night) I'll try and figure it out and I'll let you know.
One quick way would be to e-mail the images, about 5 to 8 at a time, to someone who has this stuff down. Then they would post the pictures for you.

One of these days, I'll copy Dean's post and put it in the FAQ for all to see and reference.

For Wild Will & all other Mac abusers:
the basic 2 ways to post a pic here (easily), go like this...
for a picture that exists on this or any other web-based address (web site, NOT on your computer) it's easy:
go to the picture page, say this one:
http://www.bikepics.com/pics/pics/ktm-adventure-05-bikepics-551437.jpg
once there, copy the image address by 1) right click&hold, use the "copy image address" drop-down thingy, or 2) hilite & copy the actual address in the "address window" of your browser. copy on mac is "apple" key + "C" key
Now, back in your post, you can insert the picture anywhere in your post by.....
click the little icon in the tool bar just above your message-in-progress that looks like mountains w/ a black sun/yellow sky, and paste (apple + V) the copied address into the little window that opened when you single clicked the "mountain".
hit "OK" or enter on the little window, and that will put the pic's address inline in your post (but you won't see the pic until you submit the post).
Like this: _IMG]http://www.bikepics.com/pics/pics/ktm-adventure-05-bikepics-551437.jpg[/IMG_
and when you submit the post, you'll see this:
http://www.bikepics.com/pics/pics/ktm-adventure-05-bikepics-551437.jpg
the other way, if you have pics on your computer you wish to put in a post, you have to have the picture somewhere online, accessible password-free from any browser. I use this free site http://www.imagevenue.com/ which allows pics up to 1.5 meg or so. That site is dead easy & self explanatory, and once you've copied (apple + C) the address that site supplies to you, you simply paste (apple +V) that address directly into the post, no "mountain" necessary.
you'll post an address like this _ URL=http://img140.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc38&image=20113_@_Dean_s.JPG]
in your post, and it will give you a "clickable" thumbnail pic like this
http://img140.imagevenue.com/loc38/th_20113_@_Dean_s.JPG (http://img140.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc38&image=20113_@_Dean_s.JPG)
that opens a new window with a bigger/full size pic. I like the thumbnail bit because it doesn't distract from the text content of the post (especially if it's porn-like)
it'll do BIG pics, too:
click the small pic for full size (LOOK OUT!)
http://img37.imagevenue.com/loc212/th_21281_globe_west_2048.jpg (http://img37.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc212&image=21281_globe_west_2048.jpg)
to "acquire"pics, just click & drag them to your desktop (or any folder on your computer)
WW, first you have to plug in your puter............
Secondly, rt click on the image, the image has to be stored on a server somewhere and have a URL. After rt click on image scroll down and click on properties, move on over to the properties, copy the address in the properties. Or something like that.
Thought I'd revisit this thread for a followup. Maybe this will help some of my fellow computer dummies.
I followed Deans instructions listed above, but with limited success.
My server has a photo storage site thats free, and when you store your pictures there, it gives them the URL that Dean mentions.
Once that is done, just follow Deans instructions above. Except, I could only get it to work about one time in twenty.
My problem was, most times when I tried to post pictures, my system kept trying to post the same pic about ten times. IE;the URL would be repeated about 10 or so times. and then the picture would not post. Only occassionally would it work.
I contacted the troubleshooting guy for my server, no help.
I finally found the problem, I think.
Now, don't laugh, us dummies have feelings too, you know.
The solution was as simple as, I was holding the clicker down a fraction of a second too long, and like a machine gun on automatic, I was loading that URL address in to that post.
Now, I just barely touch the clicker, as lightly & as breifly as possible. It seems to have solved my problem.
Knock on wood, of course.
Hope this helps my fellow computer dummies.

Can you get a mouse for a Mac that has a right click button? If so, is not the problem solved?
I might have to put a right click button on ........my chainsaw.

You can adjust your click speed... There's an option in Control Panel. (Assuming you're using Windows.)

Thanks, that's exactly what my problem is(was). I'll check it out.

Therein lies the rub...I don't know much about it!
I know how to post images to SmugMug and from SmugMug to the Cafe', but I can only assume those instructions would also work for other image hosting services? And I haven't been able to figure out how to post thumbnails from SmugMug.
Ron - are we still free to use your SM account or should we be looking elsewhere? I know you were having some issues with that.
Is it possible to post images here direct from our own hard drives like we did on the old board?
Can I get from someone definitions for "linked images", "in-line images" and any other terms that should be included?
If someone could send me the info I need I'll be glad to re-write & consolidate it for posting .

Dean - on a Mac all you do is HOLD the button down to get all the right click functions in a drop-down window.
PCs are good, Macs are GRRRRREAT.
Is it possible to post images here direct from our own hard drives like we did on the old board?
Yes - but it must be under 100k in size. Use the paperclip icon to attach directly from your percuter. Like the picture below of my new kitten.
The drag is with this method you cannot place the pic precisely in the text, it just gets put at the bottom of the post. AND, it's a thumb, rather than full-size.
Can I get from someone definitions for "linked images", "in-line images" and any other terms that should be included?
"Linked images" are images that are "linked" from another site, like a SmugMug account. Some websites that make $$ from viewing such images don't allow linking, and you get funny little warnings after they've been linked (we've ALL seen this before - if you say you haven't, well....)
"Inline" images look just like "linked" images, except they are stored directly in the post (on that post's server) that they are viewed.
There are FREE image posting sites out there; my fave is http://www.imagevenue.com/ and it allows up to 10pics upload at a time from your computer, and has a 1.5meg limit per image (but NO limit to how many total pics). Unless you're uploading full-res centerfolds, you won't have a problem. It'll also resize for you if you are totally clueless (don't ask...). The instructions are on the page itself, and you can put the linked images anywhere in your post, and the images are never deleted. Well, at least not for 20 years.
Here's linked pic using http://www.imagevenue.com/, as a thumb that open a new window when you click them:
http://img129.imagevenue.com/loc443/th_23895_r1_wp_122_443lo.jpg (http://img129.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=23895_r1_wp_122_443lo.jpg)
here's the inline pic using the paperclip function:

As for uploading images to the cafe server, I'd discourage the use of the paperclip function. Uses more bandwidth....per view of the full image. Just a suggestion.
I use photobucket.com and it seems to work well. It's dead easy.
