Bound to happen - I ran out of gas last night on the freeway. Amazingly, it was generally all down hill to the next exit so the mile long push wasn't too bad. The only casualty was my right knee which bashed into the cylinder head at least a hundred times during the push.

Here's the issue: the trip computer showed I still had 47 miles to empty and the fuel warning light turned on less than a mile before it sputtered to a stop. Hardly helpful. The dealership replaced the tank a while back due to a factory paint blemish and the trip computer seemed to work fine BEFORE that. Did something get out of whack when they replaced it or are these trip computers just generally unreliable? I'll be contacting the dealer since it's still under full warranty but any advance advice would be appreciated.

It's not the computer, that just works on information supplied to it from various sensors dotted around the machine. When the dealer replaced the tank he somehow screwed up the fuel level float so it's giving a false reading to the computer which, in turn, is passing the dud info on to you. It should be a straightforward re-calibration job. Unless anyone knows different?

Cheers,
Si.

ive had a few of my fuel sensor strips inside tank replaced. sometimes magnetic tank bags mess with the electronics. but id bet if its a newer canbus bike, its the fuel sensor strip

Dave, take it back to GoAZ, explain your problem and tell them to reflash the computer. No big deal. My fuel gage on the ST was spot on.

BTW..use the tripmeter as your 2nd fuel gage. You have a 5.5 gallon tank of which 5.3 is usable. At 160 miles start looking for fuel. You should get about 225 miles before your pushing depending on how heavy your right hand has been.

The fuel gage on the Tiger is horrible, there is a reflash available, but I won't do it. It changes the fueling parameters and I don't want that. So I use the 2nd tripmeter as my primary gage.

Or you could just turn the petcock to the Res position. :pot:

the other Doug Don't listen to that rapscallion - he's messing with you.

Don't rely on that trip computer/warning light at all - I use the trip meter as my primary fuel indication (I have two trip meters on my factory computer-equipped bike, so I always reset "Trip 1" when I get gas) and secondary indication is the fuel meter on my Garmin 550 GPS - I really like that one because I can reset the range. The fuel gauge is at best a tertiary indicator. If you are going to use it as your primary, then fill up when you get below the half-tank mark.

Sorry about the incident - hope they can get your gauge tweaked a little bit.

Thanks guys. I figured it was either a dislodged sensor (if that's possible) or a calibration thing. I'll do as Jamming recommends and have them re-zap the computer. I use the trip computer as a gas gauge on long trips but for daily driving, I just plan on topping off once every 2 weeks and I'm usually fine. But I think I missed a weekend in there somewhere and got messed up.
