MotoGP to run at night?
The second round of the 2006 MotoGP championship gets underway in Qatar on Thursday April 6 amid plans for future Qatar rounds to take place at night.
Loris Capirossi, Valentino Rossi and Kenny Roberts Jr will test the idea on roads bikes on Thursday night.
Ducati rider Capirossi said:"We have a plan to ride streetbikes - I'll have a Ducati 999 - around the track to see if it's feasible to run future Qatar GPs in the dark. They have erected floodlights at several corners, so it will be an interesting experience!" said Capirossi.
Capirossi came up with the idea as a way in which the race could be run in cooler temperatures. In 2004 temperatures reached 50 degrees. For 2006, the race has been scheduled sixth months earlier in the season to help.

50 degrees! Hell, it was 81 degrees today and I rode to work!! Pansies!!
A night race would be interesting, especially for the insect contingent.

Crikey! Isn't there enough money floating around in that part of the world to enclose the whole track in some sort of bubble and just air-condition the interior??? I have to admit that 122 degrees F is a little warmer than I would want to ride around in. All the while wearing leathers...

I'd ride around the racetrack in a freakin' leather bunny suit in 122 degree heat just to be able to ride an M-1 and get paid a few million. Night racing!!!
Next they'll want to sell beer & put logos on their hats!

Night races are COOL! (No pun intended)
We used to run lots of night moto-cross races back in the '70's and '80's, and we ran a lot of IRL races at night on ovals... CART ran a road course at Cleveland under the lights, too. It's really not that tough to light the course. It's harder to light the pits so there is no glare and no shadows, but Musco Lighting has that all figured out. You don't have to buy the lights for the track, either. CART leased 'em from Musco for the Cleveland race, IIRC.
Lot's of drivers actually preferred racing under the lights as they said the track surface is better illuminated and easier to read with the light focused there rather than being everywhere during the day.
Sure would be fun to watch!
KR certainly has woke up now that he has a competitive piece. Looks like KR, Sr.'s chassis was pretty good, too... All it apparently needed was a motor...
Poor ol' Nicky Hayden... I'll bet he has nightmares about Dani Pedrosa...
Cheers!

10-4 on the Musco lighting for night races!
My favorite IRL races are at night here at Texas Motor Speedway and I've heard the drivers really like it too. (TMS is 3 miles from where I'm sitting, supposed to be working!)
Anything that keeps these boys & girls from roasting in the cars is a good thing.
The cars are much more colorful at night, and all the reflection sparkles make for beautiful pics too!

If Casey doesn't crash too often, he'll be in the top 3 - my prediction (overall, not Qatar). Pedrosa could be a HUGE spoiler for everyone, and entertainment for Rossi.

Rossi in front..even in the dark...this pic shows why Rossi said the light is not good enough....(yet)
Rossi said "sure they play soccer under lights..but hey..they run at 15 kph..we ride at 300 kph"
