After a couple attempts with carbs on the new bike I talked to Chris Hodgson at SJBMW. He recommended a pair of 45mm Mikuni HSR carbs. I found a couple and went to the never ending job of fabricating parts for this bike. I had to make new intake manifolds. throttle cables and mounting brackets and air cleaner adapters. After remaking the fuel lines, I am ready for tests. The initial runs say I am finally getting all the power out of this engine now!
WoW!!

That is a huge carb for what I assume is an 1100. Does it start OK? Any flat spots?
Cool bike.:eusa_clap:

Randy, it looks 25 MPH faster...very "racy"!
But Bill has a good point...I had 38MM Mikuni flatslides on my hotrod airhead. But I am certainly arguing with you and Chris Hodgson...or results!

45mm carb on a 565cc single too big???
Nah... I don't think so... Honda VTR-1000 Superhawk's run a 48mm carb on what amounts to a 499cc cylinder, and we used to run 40mm Lectron carbs on Honda CX500 based endurance road racer, so that was a 40mm carb on what amounts to a 250cc four-stroke, pushrod single!
If one has the jetting and needle sorted out 45mm certainly isn't too big, and those Mikuni's are suppoed to meter real well at large throttle opening/low load situations.
Anyway, that's my two yen... YMMV.
Cheers!

No problem with the 45's. I installed the smallest accellerator pump jets before I even bolted them on and they work fine. The pilot jets seem to be the right size and I will put it on the road tomorrow to test the mains. They came with 175 main jets and that might be a little too rich but, there were no flat spots up to the redline just riding around the block. I wasn't able to hold it at speed for long so tomorrow should tell. I will run about 20 miles and come back and check the plugs.
Chris recommended the 45's because he has one with them on it. Says it runs great even at high altitude.
I guess I will bolt some wings on mine and find out:rolleyes:
The motor started out as an 1100 and has been upgraded to 1150 with higher compression. It starts easier than FI with the enricher buttons pulled out. Once it warms up, even easier and finally a nice even idle. I had to shorten the idle adjuster and choke actuator. Both came as a long flexible cable attached to the carb.
DJ...no surging on this bike:eusa_clap:

Yeah, I remember a time when I had no idea what "surging" was... sigh. Looks awesome, Randy! :041:

Isn't it nice to be able to dial in a bike with brass. It's most satisfying when you get it right.

Yeah, a hell of a lot more fun than tuning & hopping up with a computer!
