View Full Version : Its Not Dave's Fault - I'm Blamin' Bones
Well I looked at those Ducatis, and the Triumphs, and the Aprillas, and the Guzzis, and then I remembered Jeff's advice and took a GS out for a ride.
Here's the result....

Harry, R1200GS is truly fantastic, good choice. A full Remus system, head pipes and can adds 8 RWHP and smooths out the torque curve, BTW.

Congrats Harry, welcome back to the Boxer fold. I knew you'd buy one after that day you took the test ride.

Way to go Harry...beautiful machine!
Dave
Thanks guys, this thing's a blast. I had to go out of town for awhile after I picked her up, that was tough. Got back and took a ride down to Kitt Peak.
The new motor is quite a step forward from the 1150. Its nice to feel a motor runnning down there again. The KRS was a great bike, but a bit too sterile. I'm thinking I'm going to really like this.
Only problem, too many goodies available. I'm selling some parts from the K bike on Ebay now. Gotta finance all them new farkles...

The GS has a more upright seating position, easier on the back and more room for Fluffy....

Harry,
Oh, you have NO IDEA what you have gotten yourself into. All the torque you need and plenty of top end, too. And ergos that just plain make sense. And I have found the GS mojo to be quite esthetically appealing in its own weird way.
Literally, the only thing I don't love about the GS is the fact that if you want to use a tank bag, you will have to go with a strap on. It is no big deal, but I really loved magnetic ones.
Yes, there are some goodies to add. I went with the aluminum cylinder head covers. I just ordered and received a laminar lip, but haven't tried it yet. Just received an Alaska Sheepskin Buttpad for long trips, but haven't tried that yet, either. Touratec black beak tip....
Did you get the hard cases? I am assuming you have the ABS version, because I see cast wheels (last year, the few non ABS bikes available in the US all had spoked wheels).
Once you complete the run in and start to really ride it, I think you will be even more impressed with the engine performance.
I am curious what YOU found during the test ride that did it for you. I shared my ideas before, but would love to know what bit you.
Congrats. Enjoy it and ride safe.

When I jumped on the bike for the test ride, I damn near turned it into the curb. I'd forgotten how heavy and slow the K bike was at low speeds. The feel of the boxer motor, the lightness and easy handling, the way the seating position felt so natural, and the awesome good looks, well maybe not so much the good looks, all added up to make it an easy decision.
I've picked up a set of Jesse bags, they were running a deal that got me a top box ($330) for free. They're a local company, so I had Al Jesse do the install.
Got my Alaska Sheepskin yesterday, ordered my Laminar Lip today. Sounds like I'm on the right track. Also ordered a set of H-B engine guards, just in case.
I'll turn 600 miles tomorrow. Going to swing by Jesse's and pick up an oil filter wrench ($35) and change the oil. I'll take it in for the valve check and computer check next week. Ran her up to around 6k comming back from Kit Peak, saw around 105 on the speedo. Don't think I'm going to miss that K bike at all.

Harry,
As you may know, the torque curve is a little different on the 1200 than the 1150. Once the run in is done and you can wick it up, you will be surprized. It pulls nice and hard from 3K, but the max. torque is at 5.5K, so it will really pull you to the top end nicely.
Nimble, huh?
Enjoy.

Harry,
I very much envy you. I'm probably gonna hold out for the R1200R. If I were you, I'd start saving up for the full Remus system. As A matter of fact I already am.
Enjoy!

Many years ago BMW (GB) ran an advert in all the Motorcycle press. It showed an R60/6 in blue metallic, with the 5 gallon tank. The machine was slipping quietly past a London bus. The rider just looked so comfortable and in controll, of both his own machine and any situation that might arise.
The point?
Sure.
The caption said "It'll take you to work - or to the ends of the Earth"
So will your new machine. You're a lucky chap Harry. Enjoy.
