Allan had asked me about FirstGear's recent change in product naming from the current "I, II, III" version designators to the new "2.0, 3.0, 4.0" etc.
In particular regard to the Mesh-Tex pants.

First a little recent history:

FirstGear belonged to Fairchild Motorsports until we (Tucker Rocky Dist.) bought the brand last year. It has always been a popular "Cadillac" brand but it had been allowed to become a little stale in the market. There is *much* more competition now, especially in performance, or "technical" textile riding apparel. FG is closely identified with our company as we were exclusive distributor so we just bought the line. Fairchild is now devoting their efforts to developing their own, in some instances, competing lines. We are devoting our efforts to developing & improving FirstGear.

OK, here's what I found out about the "2.0" designator for the new Mesh-Tex pants.

First, it's not just a marketing gimmick like I first suspected. It's a logical numbering system similar to software releases. Since we bought the FG line last year we have begun a total "reinvention" of the line, keeping old standards like the Kilimanjaro and variants; dropping tired old designs and replacing them with new, fresh designs. All will become more technical over time, some in very little time. New smaller, lighter, more effective armor, more "rider" driven details like large rubber zipper pulls and pocket tabs easier to operate with gloved and wet hands. Better vent systems. Better textile & other synthetic materials. Real waterproof zippers. More specialized pieces like the updated Kilimanjaro 4.0, the Kilimanjaro Air and the FG jaunt Jacket (think K'jaro light).

Part of this overhaul is the naming/numbering system. Before when they made minor changes to the K'jaro for instance, they either just didn't mention it except in catalog bullets...very ineffective in communication changes; or if it was a major change, called it K'jaro II, III, IV, etc. But that does not allow for recognition of minor updates.

The 2.0 can be updated to "2.1" or "2.a." for minor updates and people are accustomed to the meaning of this (software). Or if it's a major change or total redesign, it would become "3.0".

The new Mesh-Tex 2.0 Pants are due at the end of April but *could* be here earlier *if* the manufacturer can juggle schedules and get then here earlier. It's often that vague with overseas production of high-volume items, compounded by problems inherent to ocean shipping. Sometimes they will air-freight a few containers if we are about to stock-out but there are still plenty original Mesh-Tex pants in stock. There are actually few differences in them. The 2.0's are very similar with only a few styling detail upgrades and slightly more mesh area. And a $10.00 cheaper price.

I'd wait for the 2.0s if possible...a better value. You can go ahead and place an order with your dealer which will go on Back Order then your dealer will be contacted as soon as they are available to approve shipping to him.

Thanks, Dave...

Both for the coherent explanation and for the info on upcoming product.

I oringinally asked you about it because I have a perfectly serviceable pair of FG Mesh-Tex pants, but it is time to be looking into a new pair. I want the new "2.0" variant primarily for two reasons (over the pair I have)...

1.) They look better primarily because of the knee "accordion" area. The old set looks goofy as hell there...

2.) The new "2.0" series has a REAR POCKET! Hallejuhah!

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Thanks again!

Dave,

I could not find the website for First Gear, can you help?

I need some mesh pants myself.

(Did you know a French computer has the keys in different locations? Makes typing this very hard.)

Darth,
I have a very old Firstgear Kilimanjaro (it must be version .9). It has been a great jacket over the years but unfortunately has worn out (I bought it in '98, I think it has about 70k miles on it!). Anyway, I was looking at replacing it about a year ago and while the newer version of it seemed improved they were coming out with the Kilimajaro III. I thought I would wait so I did and I have to say I didn't like the styling and I heard the venting was not as good as the first. I read on other boards that the new one (III) sucked, and to buy an older one if you could find them. I started looking at other brands and was leary about the waterproof-ness (is that a word?) of them and kept wanting to go back to the Kili , version II. Anyway, I noticed www.motorcyclecloseouts.com has the older version on sale for $199! Needless to say I have one ordered and I should have it this week.

While checking FG's site I noticed version 4.0, and it looks like the original! Glad you explained all of the version info, I'll be needing another pair of overpants soon.

Ken -
Try www.firstgear-usa.com for FG info.
There is a link to our dealer locater on there where you can find all FG dealers within "X" miles of home.
Also you can link to PowersportsRider.com and page through all our catalogs, build "wish lists", etc.

John -
Glad you found the K'Jaro you wanted. Rusty at MotorcycleCloseouts.com is very honest and great to work with. He rides a KTM 950 Adventure, among others.
New Enough and Tonker are also good places to find good deals.
If I didn't have "employee pricing" for my personal gear, I would never buy *anything* without checking the Closeout sites like those first. What they sell is not returns or "scratch & dent" stuff...it is brand new, fully warrantied gear. We sell it to them at special Closeout pricing if we get caught with "old" stock when "new" versions come out, or sometimes we just buy too much and cut them a smokin' deal on our overstock.
Then they pass the savings on to you. We're happy, they're happy, you're happy.
Of course any dealer can order a Closeout item for you, assuming we still have it. They have ways of checking our Closeout stock and are free to charge you anything they like. Most will discount Closeout items but not all.

To be fair, this is pretty much the way all distributors handle closeout stock. If you don't have to have the "latest - greatest" you can really find some deals.

Mailorder is great but don't forget to support your local dealerevery way you can!

I just bought a new Kilimanjaro Air for $115. This will be a replacement for my FG Socorro which I am very happy with and will still be my winter jacket. The only problem with the Socorro is the waterproofing - it isn't after a couple years of riding and a few washes.

Dave I need to talk to you about FG/Tucker Rocky selling/giving away Tyvek jackets. They smash down tiny and make a waterproof/windproof layer that I wear under a leaking jacket or when another layer is needed in the cold. I keep the Tyvek jacket and a pair of goretex over gloves in the FG jacket's rear pocket(you hardly know they are there). Tyvek jackets cost less than $5 each and are great advertising give aways.

The only feature I miss on the Air jacket vs. the Socorro are the little seam pockets where I put keys and earplugs.

Great products

Darth,

Are you bringing your FG overpants to the Hill Country Ride. If you do, I'll discuss them with you there & the whole ride should be a business expense & tax deductible (or employer reimbursable) for you:)

I currently have a short commute, 7 miles, that I ride round trip 3 times a day most days. Its fast grooved concrete freeway & a bit of surface street. I'm too lazy to deal with overpants, & wear full gear but with Draggin Jeans. I figure the non armoured Draggin Jeans (though they do have kevlar) are my weak link. The BMW commuter overpants I have are just such a pain for the short ride. So I am always looking for that easy on/off overpant THAT I WOULD ACTUALLY USE.

Bill (Road Dog) -
Sure, I'll talk to my boss tomorrow about buying a bunch of $5.00 jackets to give away! (not) That sounds way too much like some of my other recommendations...
That could be something for The Cafe to consider one of these days.
We will have a bunch of Hardley Ableson type door prizes at the Up-N-Smoke Car & Bike Show...maybe you can win a new Skidlid?

Rob -
If the Hill Country weather is as warm & humid as it usually is in late Spring I'll probably bring a thong and my Mesh-Tex pants! If it's cooler I'd prefer my HT Overpants. HT's come 1 size up since they are an overpant...I bought mine 1 size down as I wear them as regular pants.
I'll be happy to tell you what I know..maybe we'll have some new FG literature by then.

Dave

My personal practice is that if I try something on at a dealer, I buy from the dealer rather than on line. He's paid for the inventory and service that I used to assure I like the fit and feel of the item. My loss of on-line discount is his due (IMHO).

But, the replacement item, or ones I don't feel the need to "test drive", I buy on line with no qualms. Of course it helps that my neearest stores are in Montgomery, Alabama where the selection is dismal.:icon_cry:

I too will go out of my way to buy from a bricks and mortar store. Most have been very helpful. But I have also had this experience with one local place in particular.

"I bought (item X) from you guys and have been happy with it. I would like to get (item Y) which I see you don't carry, but is it from the same manufacturer. I researched the features and everything on line so I am pretty sure it is what I want. Can you order it for me?" Now, note, I have not suggested they get it to me for online price or anything of the sort. Just that they get it, since they are a dealer for that brand.

Response "Well, we don't usually carry that item because it doesn't sell. So I am not too keen on ordering it."

Me: "But you don't have to 'carry' it. I will buy it when it gets here. Hell, I will give you a deposit now if you want. The only thing I ask is that if it doesn't fit, you will exchange it for the correct size, same item."

Them: "Welllllll.....I don't know. We usually don't stock that item."

Give me a break! So, I went home and ordered online from Newenough. Those folks can't do enough for you!

Take a guess whether or not I went there when it was time to look at track bikes? Nope.

Bones, I totaly agree with your attempt to support the bricks & mortar stores. I will spend a fair amount more to forge & maintain a business relationship. But sometimes the person on the other side makes it pretty damn hard to not just go the impersonal route & order online.

I'd say my wife & I will spend 75 percent of our christmas shopping online. Its just so much easier to buy many things online. OTOH, I will buy parts from my local BMW dealer instead of Chicago BMW. Chicago BMW has yet to feed me or give me any test rides.

Well my new First gear Kilimanjaro jacket came Monday from Motorcyclecloseouts.com. I think I had one of the original Kilimanjaro jackets (I bought it in 1998). I picked up the version 2 on a closeout (for $199) and man have they made improvements to it! I wore it in today on my commute and it was great, I only need some good ol' rain to give it a thorough test!
