I went to the show at the Verizon Center in DC last night. I am a pretty died-in-the-wool fan, but I must say, the show totally sucked. The sound system was awful - it sounded at first as if there had not been a sound check, and then I kept expecting them to adjust it, but it just continued to suck, as did the setlist. I always thought Tipper Gore was hot, though.

Really bad. First set was about one hour to the minute, second set started out acoustic - you could barely even make out the melody, Weir's vocals were very weak, it was like - um, let's see - a Ratdog concert! I was surprised because The Dead's 2004 incarnation played tight, these guys last night sounded like they just escaped from a rest home, with the possible exception of Warren's guitar solo on "Alabama Getaway".

The best of the Dead's ouerve seems to be behind us. Way behind us. I listened to a broadcast of a show from Baltimore in 1978 on Sirius on the way home. Thank God for Dead radio.

That's a bummer. We know you enjoy your music.

Lots of the old British groups from the sixties have "re-formed" (rarely with 100% original lineups) and are touring again.
I've avoided the temptation to go and see any so far, for precisely the reasons you outline.

Cheers,
Si.

I was fortunate enough to see the Grateful Dead several times. They were almost like a local band. I loved them, and still do. Guess old dead heads just sort of fade away.

I really like stuff Jerry did with David Grisman. I believe Arabia was one of those excellent long songs. I have it somewhere.

This is another fun one in video.

Bob,
You just helped justify my reasoning for not riding down to Charlottesville tonight.

I will never forget hearing "So Many Roads" in Chicago in 1995. But my favorite era is the early 1970s.

Guess old dead heads just sort of fade away.

That great Canadian icon of music Neil Young sings "better to burn out than fade away." Alas, perhaps there are some memories that are best left as memories rather than trying to recapture the magic.

I could say that about a great many bands. I'm mystified by some of the recent re-groupings... The Doors without Morrison? Alice in Chains without Lane Staley? The Germs without Darby Crash? Queen without Freddie Mercury?

I don't get it.

Money makes the world go 'round, the world go 'round, the world go 'round....
A Mark, a Yen, a Buck or a Pound... a Buck or a Pound....
That clinking, clanking sound, it makes the world go 'round...it makes the world go 'round.

What does not dishonoring a memory or individual count when there's a bit of quick cash to be made?

Sad times.

Indeed, my friend.
