That is gorgeous - gives me a rise in my Levis! Love the color scheme. Looks like a factory Ohlins rear shock, too! Need to remove the rear pegs and add an eliminator.

Remus already has a full system for the R1200S.

One of these days, I will tell you how Remus developes their pipes for Beemers, absolutely fastinating. In short, they can change the pipe Diameter in real time while running the bike on a dyno, in fact they can change portions of the pipe dia. to effect the standing wave in the exhaust while the engine is at various loads, RPM's and throttle settings. They are truly one of the most scientific pipe builders out there.

The plans at this point in any event, is to take a R1200S with full Remus to Bonneville next Sept to see how fast it really is. We will have several Diameter rear tires so that hopefully we won't encounter the same problems that my ST had of hitting the rev limiter in top gear before the first mile marker. It would be great if Bro Dave, a Bonneville Veteran, could be out there at the same time.

Wish I could be there Dean-O!
But I'll be coming out of turn 4 in a full-lock slide towards retirement about that time!
Maybe I can arrange a meeting with "Bonneville Joyce", aka "The Salt Witch" for you...if she comes up to you on the starting line and shows you her twinkie, I promise you it's worth 10 MPH on the big end, trying to get away!
Ed Mabry saw it one day and thought someone had parked an Edsel in our pit.

Dean-o,

Remind me again how fast you got the ST at Bonneville? I had my Yamaha at the Firebird Main dragstrip yesterday and got 150 out of it, but I was in traffic and had to brake for a hard decreaser - that was an NHRA 1/4 mile strip.

Bob, at over 5,000 ft elevation and on slippery wet salt with a worn rear tire, 144.4 thru the speed traps with speed readings accurate to the 3rd decimal point. Ask Darth what that means. Was at that speed before the first mile marker from a standing start.

So there :D

Dean - O
I'm not sure where they would have "taken your picture" for that speed run as part of the "run what you brung" deal.
Depending on which course & timing configuration they were using, and which sanctioning body is running it, they time at these markers, subject to minor variation.
After a mile run-up:
Mile Marker (MM) 1 to MM 1.25 (This speed is only used as a tuning aid or "bragging rights.)
MM 1 to MM 2.
MM 2 to MM 3.
The above are all "average speeds" for the part of the course indicated.
Then a "flash" speed taken "out the back door" at a 3 ft. wide trap, like at a drag strip. This is also used only for tuning and bragging rights.

I imaging they were giving the "run what you brung" (speed only, no records or competition) a mile run up, then timed you for a mile. They could have used an average speed for that mile or the "flash" speed at the end. I suspect the latter. They may also have been using only the MM 1 to MM 1.25 average.

Faster bikes and cars would generally have another mile, "super fast" cars would have another two with a longer run-out.

Al Teague's 434 MPH piston driven car backs up a mile and a half behind the "starting line" to start. This gives him no advantage, it just takes him a long distance to get started and they don't time from the starting line. They push him to about 115 to get him started. He comes by the starting line at 195 and shifts to 2nd gear there!
He goes through the gears to 4th making all kinds of beautiful racket, then at around 300 MPH he disappears over the horizon. You can still hear him but not loud. Then...he hits 5th gear and the nitrous! And this great big, silver rooster tail appears above the horizon (throwing salt up) and the ground literally shakes. It makes the hair on your body stand on end and you see lots of people rubbing goose bumps in the 100 degree heat! Just incredible.

As for your 144 & change...this is very impressive for a stock motorcycle, especially with the lousy salt conditions last year. Unless your bike was running at red line with NO wheelspin (virtually a certainty on the wheelspin), you would probably run another 5-10 MPH near sea level on pavement. The elevation is really more like 4400 but that saps a lot of horsepower right off the bat.

Weight is your friend at Bonneville (up to a point!) as acceleration is not important. Torque is generally not a big deal but horsepower = speed and is important but not more so than aero & TRACTION! Lotsa generalizing hear but you get the idea.

I've seen lots of Bonneville rookies who buy the fastest thing from Japan, Inc. only to run maybe 150-160. You hear them saying something like this to their buddies, "Man, I don't understand this! The magazines timed this bike at 188. I bought it for 10 grand, put another 5 grand in it making it really fast, come out here and run a stinking 160! What the hell?"

Welcome to Bonneville...the most humbling motor racing know to man!

And then there is our resident Old Fart and Curmudgeon who shows up on a stock touring bike and runs 144+! You should have taken some Squiddie money Dean-O! Sometimes "too much horsepower" really is too much.

Bro Darth, from what I understand the way they had it set up last Sept, the timing lights or what ever they used were set up at mile marker 4 and mile marker 5, also a light was set up at MM 5 and another set up one kilometer later, near the 5 mile marker. Your speed was the speed between the two respective lights, and then you had another 5 or so miles to shut down. I went full blast with one hand on the throttle and in my case the left hand behind my back in a full tuck, all the way to MM 7 as it was so much fun. You slow down gingerly esp when above 120 or so because of the slippery conditions. The ST was like it was on rails.

DarthRider
01-16-2006, 01:59 PM
That's why I was a bit "fuzzy" on the timing methods in my post.
The SCTA meet in August is the big one but the records are really just "club" records, although most are "unofficial" national & world records.
Bub's all bike meet in Sept is sanctioned by the FIM in Belgium, and...the AMA. This gives them shots at both International and National records.

But...all three of the sanctioning bodies use different timing rules. Similar but different.

I don't trust myself with that down on the tank, right hand on throttle, left hand/arm trailing behind method. I do the same thing but reach down with my left hand and grab a fork leg..."just in case." Like flat trackers do on mile tracks.
I guess that would be a little hard to do with your ST's fairing, huh?!

Nekkid bikes rule, Dean-O...faired bikes, well..you know.

Deano & Darth

You guys know your both crazy, right? 144 mph tucked in & one hand behind the back? Darth, one hand on the forks?

I love it. Sounds like a wild ride I'd like to see. Maybe when the new RR comes out we can get some speed runs.

How about a board meeting on the flats?

YES!!:p

Harry, yes the young Dean-O was quite stylish on that speed run in 1924 with his form-fitting rubber racing suit.
Note pointy butt and odd shaped noggin::D :(

DJ...afraid that was me on the Peckerhead Fish Bike Hi-Speed Special. Our primary sponsor was Chicken O' the Sea canned Tuna with secondary sponsorship from Copper Tone.
All went well until I heard "THAR SHE BLOWS!" and a harpoon slammed into the tank at 63.784 MPH, barely missing my budgies.

Dean-O, here's what you need to replace that oddball muffler on the R1200S when you take posession:

I hate to mention this, but there were no images on your posts, just an X. I don't think that's a good sign.:(

The "Bobbit" mobile is there, but none of the others. I would love to see NTM's picture. Oh well.

Just came across some more R1200S info on the BMW Santa Cruz (http://www.bmwscruz.com/motorcycles/index.html) website... you'll find it in the "Current Models" section. The base price is listed as $14,700. Cool pics!
