Wow! I knew that smoking cost us a lot of dough for health care but holy cow!!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated last week that cigarette smoking results in an estimated 443,000 premature deaths each year, and costs the economy $193 billion in health care expenses and lost time from work.
As we all know, smoking is a major contributor to heart disease, cancer and lung disease.

And, then there is the financial cost of smoking.
One of our neighbor families is a married couple of about 30 years old. They both work at jobs paying about 13 and 10 bucks an hour.
They are forever behind the financial 8-ball.
So, about a year ago I get this one opportunity to talk to them about $$ because they are bitching to me about their finances.
I share with them what we did when we were their age to reduce our spending. I mention me quitting smoking back in 77'. I then ask how many packs a month the two of them buy, and at what price.
After they tepidly tell me, (because they already know what kind of money they blow, but not the exact amount) I say, "There ya see... There's a new car payment or a new roof on the house or ???"

After a year now, they are still smoking.

The sad thing is that by and large those on the lowest socio economic rung are represented way out of proportion of cigarette smokers, those that can not afford it are the heaviest users. The last I noticed, cigaretts were around $6.00 per pack.

I see those same folks buying lottery tickets while replenishing their smoking supplies.Throwing away money that could be put to much better use.One of My neighbors was bitching about My Harley."I wish I was rich so I could buy a Harley"He whines. As He sucks on a cigarette. How much do You smoke I ask.He tells Me.He spends over $400 a month on cigs. My monthly payment on My Elecra-Glide Standard is $207 a month.I dont feel sorry for Him. At all.Same Guy is a vegan, always bitching at Me for eating meat. While He pays big bucks to inhale poison.Go figure.

We had a get together at my house yesterday - quite a few college kids (my wife is a Perfesser) and they were commenting that a lot of young folks smoke these days - it seems that there was a "generational dip" among young folks in the 70's - 90's probably fueled by the Surgeon General's report in the early 60's, but that things have swung back a bit. It is a little bit "chic" for kids to smoke again - at least kids on the "club scene" here in DC. Maybe we need some more of those great public awareness campaigns from 30 years ago with pictures of blackened lungs and people with tracheotomies.

Here's another weird one for you...

I used to own a boatyard up here, and hands down, was known to have the best, and very cleanest fiberglass tech in town.
If you know anything at all about fiberglass repair it is one dirty, stinky, dusty profession.
So, my guy is the best but also has some pretty weird quirks. He wears a respirator or a dust mask most all day long when needed or not except during lunch, and his two breaks where he takes off his mask and lights up a cigarette. He's a one pack a day dude.
He is also a vegetarian somewhat. He eats fish and dairy.
