On my leather jacket that is. I've got to get a new zipper for my jacket so I tried to contact the manufacturer, Pharr Leather in southern Texas. After a long wait on the telephone I got a recording that the company is no longer in business and if I had any questions to contact their bank. Sounds like they are really out of business!

Has anyone had to do this? I know it sounds simple enough but when it comes to leather, getting a job done right isn't always easy to find.

Couldn't you get your gear to a local leather shop and have them change out the zipper?

There are usually specialty seamsters and seamstresses around that could do that for you. Check with a local leather shop, they should be able to direct you to someone close by.

Long time ago I had the same problem with a jacket that was given to me as gift. Only problem was the kind person giving it to me had bought it in Spain!

Anyway, zipper fragged and I couldn't find a leather shop in our little burg. Then a buddy told me about this guy who did auto and boat upholstery, along with making vinyl boat covers (which had big, long zippers...). Took the jacket to the guy and he put a new zipper on the jacket while I waited... All of about 15 minutes, which included him having to find the correct zipper from his stock.

So there's another possibility for your repair...

Hope this helps!

Yeah, I've thought of those ideas and that's probably what I'll end up doing. Its probably not such a big deal. But then again I tried to fix it myself and ended up killing the zipper pull!

Bingo Dallara, and I just happen to know where such a place is! The guy will also cut down motorcycle seats and recover them as well.

Many shoe repair shops and some tailors can fix heavy duty zippers.

DJ - you are entertainingly evil! Keep it coming. Oh, but that was another scene in Something About Mary.

What I have found is the number of chains that are now prepared to take on work like this whether they sold you the product or not. My wife was in Danier Leather here in Canada and bought a leather jacket. She mentioned that she had another leather jacket that needed repairs and the sales person said to bring it on it for fixing. They charged a very nominal fee. And when asked "We hope it brings you back here."

Service isn't dead. And when you find it, appreciate it. And support it.

A good shoe repair place has fixed zippers on my Kushitani & Dainese stuff - usually wind up with better zippers than from new. I have a Chinese alteration shop near me that can fix darn near anything having to do with clothes/shoes/learther.

Jamis, you might contact the Yamaha dealer in Pharr, TX, the owner is the same that owns the leather factory. It is my understanding they do the leather items for Harley Davidson I think they are still in business under a different name. Haven't heard different.
