I have been planning to do my own service (r1150r 18k mi). I keep pushing it back thinking I need to find a slot of several hours to do it!
However, I think if I'd split the tasks into smaller projects (e.g. 1-2 hrs at a time), I would have been done by now.

So do you think of any reason not to split the service into smaller projects, and how would you go by grouping tasks.

Thanks.

I'd break it up into 2-3 sessions if you only want to spend an hour or so each time. The valve adjust will take the longest if it's your first time.

I'd start with the engine oil change. Take the bike out for a spin to warm it up, then return and empty oil and filter. While it's draining, check the brake, clutch, transmission and rear drive fluid levels. Also check your brake pads and lube the side and center stands. When those are done and all the oil has drained, put in the new oil filter and fill 'er up.

Next project would be to check your spark plugs (replace if needed) and then the valves and throttle bodies. Valves must be cold so it's best if you let the bike sit overnight. If the valves take you forever to adjust, do the throttle bodies (warm engine) on yet another day.

That's it as far as I can think of. The 18,000 mile check is really quite simple.

I don't see a problem with spreading out the servicing. Indeed I've often done that on my own machines over the years. Much better, for example, to get the oil/filter change done on time than to wait untill you've got time to do everything.
Like Taosports says, group the tasks into areas. Work on one area at a time.
It's worth making a note of exactly what you've done and when. This saves those "I'm sure I did the valves last spring - or was it fall?" moments.
Good luck, Simon.

Absolutely - every time - a bit here and a bit there, some earlier than scheduled, others later.
Oils first, valves next, TB balancing next and so along the list as it is convenient.
