Promethean, I notice that when I post pictures on the forum, they don't automatically resize to fit the screen..?
Is this normal..? If so, should I resize them before posting them..?
Thanks Promethean, You Da Man...

Mike I've found SmugMug "Large" seems to work well...fills the screen and doesn't require scrolling to see it all. But I do have to size before posting.

Yes. This is standard vBulletin behavior. You can resize them prior to posting or wait until I have installed a hack that gives you the ability. I will probably install it sometime during this week while I upgrade the vBulletin version.

Dave,
I do the same thing as well.
For those who use photobucket, you can set the image size when you upload the images to their site. They automatically resize/resample it to the resolution you want. I think they have a few preset resolutions that they offer for resizing.

Mike,
Done. Please try posting images now. You will see clickable resized thumbnail images.

Would there be harm in increasing those thumbnail re-sizes to 800 to 1024 pixels wide? Seems like a PITA to be clicking on those smallish images.
.... Seems like a PITA to be clicking on those smallish images.
I agree about the clicking. I find myself skipping some of the threads with lots of pictures.
Though I would suggest sizing them at 800 x 600 or so (whatever is the largest size for a 17" monitor without having to scroll sideways).
I even scrolled past a lot Steve's excellent photos because it is so time consuming to click each one.
...just a thought.

I agree with JB and Steve above.
My uneducated opinion is that any change will bring problems for someone. How about those using their PDAs, cellphones, notebooks, or whatever with a much smaller screen? Not everyone is using a 17" monitor.
Personally I much prefer the new method. When displayed full size pictures often went considerably beyond the screen, and took the accompanying text along for the ride. Not being a picture person, I tended to skip threads with a lot of pictures for just that reason.
You'll notice that the full size picture downloads with the message and is then replaced with a smaller version. Clicking on the bar to get the full size picture doesn't require any additional download time, its already there.
And finally, unless we want to submit things like this to a vote, I suggest we trust Abhijeet to make best decision.
As I said, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Personally, I don't see any hardship involved in clicking thumbnails.
This feature was instituted because enough interest was expressed to implement it. If that is no longer the case, please decide amongst yourselves and let me know and I will remove the feature.
If I make one change, it's going to bother one group of people. If I don't, it will inconvenience another. So...whichever group prevails, I'm bound to upset someone.
If a uniform resize option is truly a necessity, I will see what can be done.
If the resize request cannot be met, I will remove the thumbnail feature entirely and folks will be responsible for resizing every single picture in their online image archives prior to posting.
So, please take your time and let me know what you would like done.
As an aside, I may not be able to get to this request right away since I have other constraints on my time.
Thank you.
Abhijeet, remember Lincoln.
you can please some of the people all of the time,
you can please all of the people some of the time,
But you can not please all of the people all of the time. :)
Present conditions work fine for me. Thanks

I have no problem with it as it is.
I'd vote for full-sized pics, but some come through as billboard size. Slow loading, too much scrolling, some so big you can't even tell what you're looking at.
At least the present method enforces a size reduction, although it doesn't address the slow-loading issue.

What I'm thinking is have the current system, but not have it kick in until the posted image is over (say) 1024 pixels wide or 800 pixels tall. I would think most people's monitors could handle that without scrolling. Bigger images would get reined in like they are now.

OK so let us have another look at the "Big Picture" situation again....
I love to be able to read a ride report and see the big pictures with out the process of clicking on the small pic to enlarge it and then clicking on the cross to remove it...... (This is about as efficient as a 1929 "Spagforth Stoat").
It's a bit like having to dial a code before taking your next bite of your favorite meal.....
Have a go at this by comparison;

HOW ABOUT MAKING THE SMALL PICS MUCH BIGGER???
Hope I'm not out of line here...... (As if).:pot:

Hopefully the smaller pics are a bone for those of us who are still limited to a 26.4 dial-up conneciton.

Unfortunately, as I understand it, the speed of loading is not affected as the full pic is downloaded, then after that is accomplished the software resizes the pic.
We all know that I am a computer dummy, so I could be confused.....:linzi:

I'm just skeered of ever larger pics that mean I have to go get yet another beer while the page loads...

Does not have an effect on the download time in your case.

Guys,
As an FYI, Frenchy has taken the initiative and posted an appropriate sized picture in his posts on Advrider. Smugmug provides this functionality.
Not everyone here has a Smugmug account and the thumbnail feature was installed keeping this fact in mind.
If however, everyone would like to take on the responsibility to resize their own pictures and post them for the benefit of the viewers, I would be more than happy to take the thumbnail feature away.
As it stands, I am really slammed at work amongst other things and have precious little time to implement the changes that were requested.
I will revisit this thread when I'm less pressed for time.
Thanks.

That would suit me admirably. Although I was happy enough with the thumbnails when they first appeared, I am now finding them rather tiresome. Especially so in "ride reports" where clicking on and off pics and closing windows etc spoils the flow of a good read.

Hi,
To be perfectly honest, when I write a ride report post, I write it here on Motorcyclist Cafe. I use smugmug to host all my ride pictures, at a cost of something like $35 a year or so. Uploading the pictures is a bit time consuming, but once they are all on smugmug, I can copy my entire post from the Cafe, and simply paste it into other forums, like Advrider, Pashnit, ect.
When I add a picture to a post, smugmug gives the option for the picture size. I use the 'large' size, because they seem to be big enough without being billboards, as Darth said.
The pictures in the post on Advrider (http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9453399#post9453399) are posted at the exact same size they are here. I kind of think the thumbnail feature can be distracting, but I understand the reason.
For comparison, on the FJR Forum (http://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=115985&st=0&gopid=568074&#entry568074) those exact same sized pictures appear huge, huge, HUGE!
Now Blogger.com, on the other hand, SUCKS with pictures. I have to go in and manually resize each picture in the html code. If I don't do that, only a portion of the picture shows.
Don't know if this helped (or even contributed) with the subject of thumbnails, just my .02

I kind of find the Thumbnail thing distracting too. I say we go back to the "old ways" and if anybody abuses the system with large photographs then we can just use Administrative "Spidey-powers" to either URL-link them or shrink them. I don't really mind doing that, and we are small enough that it doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

Me too...*unless* for some reason I don't know, it complicates Abhijeet's life in any way.

Bob, thanks for volunteering to re-size pics if needed.

Err . . . sorry to butt in - But :webers: I would like to remind members that my SmugMug professional account is open to members*.
Feel free to check it out:
A couple of interesting points - there is no limit to the size or amount you post. Viewers may, if they wish, purchase your pictures off the net and you set the prices. The base prices (What SmugMug charges you) are quite reasonable to start with (for example - 4 X6 19 cents) then you mark them up to your hearts content. :pot:
If you have any questions, check with some of the people who are using the FREE service now. If you were to go to: http://combo.smugmug.com/The%20Motorcyclist%20Cafe That would get you right into the Motorcyclist Cafe Galleries. Using: http://combo.smugmug.com will get you to the main page in the album.

* The requirements for me are as follows: One must be an active, participating member for at least a year or be recommended by a participating member. You can put a "lock" on your gallery - however please understand that I'm able to open any gallery, locked or not. This is what I need to feel comfortable with this process. SF
