View Full Version : Light system capacity?

I am not a sparky, but, as one who likes enough light, focused directional light, I have been trying to understand the wiring of my 50R.

Not wanting to melt the wires or switches with the 100w main beam, I have started to try to understand what the (theoretical) limit is?

1 mm wires - 18 guage. Stranded wire -10amp rated capacity. System has a 7.5amp fuse (rated at 32v) in the main beam line. If at say 13 volts running - capacity should be 97.5w? Never blown a fuse yet - in 12K miles.

I have been contemplating putting a relay into this line to spare the load on the system. If my math is correct, I am currently running at the limit.

Anyone concur?

Hi Brian,
As you know, I am contemplating a similar lighting upgrade on my R. Check out the info available on the Jim Davis Motorcycle Relay Kits, website. It is quite informative, and Jim will answer any questions you might have.

Tks.

I am continuing to talk with several EE's at work. It appears I am OK with my current set up - but will be measuring the actual amps drawn this pm on the 100w bulb circuit.

I was at the point this past WE of installing a relay, but then decided to investigate the actual rated capacities of the wire, fuses etc.

Bum,
I looked at Jim's site. Interesting with some good ideas like placing the relays in the headlight itself. No real technical data on specs, loads, capacities and shipping out of Japan is a pain. Since I am handy with my hands, making the bits is fun and a lot cheaper. He does not solder his terminals which I think is essential for relaibility.

I am researching good relays at the moment. I have decided to wire from the battery with 14g wire. Should I at a later stage want to add additonal lights- I will then have more than enough capacity to and from the 30amp relays.

I will also be fitting and trying the Zenon filled 100/80 bulbs. These together with the higher terminal voltage at the lamps should be - enlightening!
