View Full Version : New System cases arrived for my R1150R
Anyone want to come by and help install them? And show me how to key the locks? I'll provide the beverages and a warm garage to work in.
2"+ of snow and still coming...high 20s now...probably won't ride today...was in the 60s two days ago. I love the season's...NOT.
Anyway, spring will be here before you know it.
Take care.

I'm not getting out in this mess. Did you get a kit that contains the waffers for re-keying? I did mine a few years ago at the BMW dealership in Knoxville. They were working on my R and one of the mechanics showed me how to do it. They had a bunch of the wafers laying around, so I re-keyed my case locks while they worked on the bike.
Here's a link to some pictures showing how to re-key the locks.

I re-keyed by cases to the new bike - without having a wafer set. Swapped the wafers around to suit the new key and left out one of the wafers - and was able to match up the rest - who will know?

Fly,
Welcome.
Remember one thing about those very nice cases. DO NOT push down on the handles to click tight with the day glo tabs sticking out. They bend easily and are a Pain In the A$$ to straighten. How do I know this? Because I sometimes insist on learning things the hard way......so you don't have to.

Any suggestions on how to get into the clamping mechanism of the cases?
My one side is a little sloppy and I do not see any fixtures that suggest a way to get in. I would like to adjust it to snug it up.

Thad---thanks much for that link...I saved it for future reference...keying the locks is a mystery to me. I was going to tackle the process one night this week (hopefully)...after I get back from robbing a liquor store to get the cash to pay for the purchase. You'd think Chicago BMW would do the lock keying for you (I asked) but the guy said no and to call him when I was ready to tackle the process and he'd walk me through it on the phone. If I get stuck I'll take them up on the offer.
All the stuff showed up Friday via UPS...one box was in good shape, the other had about 1/3rd of the cardboard ripped off the end and there was a big tear on one side of the box. Pathetic, but THANKFULLY no damage to the cases.
And thanks for eveyone's input.

Don't rob a liquor store. You could get you head blown off in a place like that. Watch 'Pulp Fiction' and play close attention to Pumpkin and Honey Bunny's conversation. Nobody’s expecting to be robbed in a dinner.........
If you have problems with the re-keying, let me know. I’m just on the other side of Nashville from you.
Oh, and if you decide to rob a dinner and Jules is there with a briefcase, don’t get greedy. That’s for his boss, and he won’t let you have it.

I hope you have a better experience than I had. I tried to do the locks myself but found the instructions/diagrams to be inadequate. After I locked my cases shut and couldn't get them open  I took them to the dealer and paid $20 to have the locks removed and properly keyed. Money well spent. Never be in a hurry when opening and closing your cases and they will serve you well.

Step away from the DVD machine - put a cold, wet towel on your forehead until these urges pass......:045:
Actually, I do have another question about keying the locks...if I screw it up, how do I undo and retry the process?
If the dealer is to be my ultimate backup, I may as well try and learn from the experience and do it myself.
Your thoughts and comments are welcome.
Regards.

When you rearrange the wafers and insert the key, if all the wafers aren't flush with the barrel, it's screwed up. Remove the key and rearrange the wafers again! I wouldn't insert the lock into the case until it's right.
It's a bit of a puzzle. You can work at it one waffer at a time, or one side at a time. And, by the time you get the hang of it, you're done.
