You can't fit a new style front loader to my old Ford 8N because of the design of the front axle and supports. They did make a front loader for these at one time, but they look like an erector set and are hard to find. I think if I found one, I wouldn't want to use it. One of the things I like the most about this old 8N is it's looks and I wouldn't hide it with the old style loader.
I have been moving alot of dirt lately and dragging it around with my box blade has been difficult and my wheelbarrow has been getting much more use than I prefer.
I found specs on a couple different 3 point dirt scoops and settled on the King Kutter brand as the one I wanted. I was in Cape Girardeau yesterday and found a deal on the one I wanted. I still have a lot of dirt to move and I wont be sorry to retire the wheelbarrow!!

Funny you should say that Dave, I'm wondering if I will need front ballast when the bucket is full of dirt LOL!

Do the math... Weight x arm = moment

You need to know the weight of the tractor.
Figure out where the balance point of the tractor is. Once you have that and if its's not in the center figure the percentage from the center.

Then Measure back to the center of the bucket. That's your arm.

Assumed weight of dry soil = 100 pcf (lbs per cubic foot)

Dry weight = 2.7*62.4*(1-e) = 100 pcf

Weight of water = e*62.4

Here's a formula for the average weight of soil.

There ya go.

OR...... just put dirt in and if the front end gets light. You need some ballast :)

Sorry Randy...I'm being a smartass...I was bored

Funny Enough I was gonna say you'll probably need some front weights on your beastie!

That looks like a sturdy construction and sturdy usually means heavy add some soil and Y'all are gona being like that Knievel feller on steroids :020::020::020:

I told the Mrs. once that every REAL man wishes he had his own tractor. If we leave AZ when I retire next year and wind up with more than 1/2 acre of land I'm sure I'll need my own tractor to handle all the work. :icon_wink:

If you have less than 1/2 acre, you need at least a riding lawn mower :045:
If you don't have grass, you will need it to pull the wagon for your fire wood :045: or gardening equipment...or...I could go on forever justifying another man toy!!

Perhaps I'm just spoiled; I'm a farm boy and I've been driving tractors since I was about eight. I still like going and checking them out at the county fairs, but I'm still glad I don't need to use them every day, as in my younger days.

We, farmers, used to have a couple of sayings which I hope I can remember.

"Farming is fun, using the tools and equipment is fun, as long as you do not need to earn a living from it."

"If I won a million dollars I'd keep on farming, until I ran out of money and could no longer afford it, that is."

BTW, your Ford is one of the few I've ever seen without a bucket on the front, usually a "four-in-one" bucket. You could just scoop up a ton to counterbalance the weight in the rear. However, there are cast iron weights made for the same purpose which are readily available. I recall they sit right in front of the radiator. But with my memory, who knows? :)

I used to have a 6ft bush hog that was about the limit the Ford could handle and still keep the front wheels on the ground. It was a heavy duty unit and I think it weighed more than the full bucket will. The Ford does have a heavy duty grill guard that can be used to hang the weights I can get at the local farm supply, or I could just hang a bucket up there :icon10:

This is a pic of the bushhog with a blade sitting on the top.

Perhaps I will find time to do some customization to the 8N far in the future. After the winery is built and the vineyards are planted, I'm sure I could find some sort of project for FRS Engineering. They did make a flathead V8 conversion plate for these back in the 60's.

Hmmm....maybe something like this

I could do without the flames though :icon_wink:

I hadn't even noticed that the picture was of an 8N. I spent a summer on my cousin's farm outside of Fresno, CA driving one of those and pulling a "fence plow" used for clearing weeds around grape vineyards. I actually got paid for the fun; what city kid could has for more? Ten cents and hour bought my my first rock n roll record album!
