Hi
I have been reading some of the stories on this site and love it.
I currently am a V-Strom 1000 rider. I have a question maybe someone here can help with.
If a person were going explore Australia for a year or so, would it be best to ship my bike there or buy one there then sell it before returning to Canada?
Thanks

G'day..and welcome to the Café.
Boxerboy might know more about this than me...I'll ask him to comment.
I just got an email from a guy from the US that has brought his bike out and has taken months to get it off the wharf and through customs...sheesh!
When I catch up with him I will find out more.
My guess would be to buy one here and sell it after..anything I can help with just ask.
Merry Christmas.

Cool, thanks.
I am just starting to look at the possibility of doing such a trip.

Best way to do this? I'm thinking the answer is different for different individuals.
If you can afford the outlay to buy one here, and then have the time to sell or someone to sell it for you once you leave, then that would be the most convenient method. It costs much more upfront however. It allows you to continue to use your own bike, and allays concerns re: transport damage to your own bike.
I'd contact someone like Southbank BMW..

..and inquire whether they'd consider a buy back scheme. You might strike it lucky...maybe they already have one? For the use over a year, I suspect not, but all questions deserve an answer.
A reasonably new 1200GS should be easily attainable. Keep an occasional eye here..

Of course, there are many other choices...including V stroms.
Now this would be an adventure bike worth writing up......plentiful, reliable and almost disposable...

...that'd make a great ADVrider thread!

G'day PeaceMan,
We would love to see you over this way.
I did a quick check of the Australian Customs website and found this:
"temporary importations
Goods may be brought into Australia on a temporary basis without the payment of Customs duty or taxes for a period of up to 12 months. These goods are referred to as Temporary Imports. The legislative provisions for Temporary Imports are contained in Sections 162 and 162A of the Customs Act 1901 and Regulations 124, 125, 125A and 125B of the Customs Regulations 1926. Another way goods can be brought into Australia on a temporary basis is under the cover of a 'carnet' which is an international "passport for goods". All temporary imports must be re-exported within the approved period.
The nature of the goods, what they will be used for while they are in Australia and who is importing them will determine which provisions the goods may be eligible for."
I suggest you correspond by email with these nice people, http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4355 who will bend over backwards providing they have been forewarned of your plans and what goods you wish to bring in.
Have a very Merry Christmas and please don't hesitate to call me if you need further info.
Cheers,
JQ.
