So it was Texas...
I was hoping that he'd take his helmet off and we'd see grey hair and a beard.
Was that you Dave???..or just a very naughty boy..:003:..and a squid for sure.
I'm not sure they can book him now that he's home?

Nope not me...if it had been I would not have gone to my mom's house with TV cameras rolling, then goof around the neighborhood for a while, then take off on my bike again (cameras still rolling). In between the three police jurisdictions who came to the house to chat with me...I mean him and his mom.
There were outstanding warrants the cops knew about and no arrests as of news time!
What we saw on TV here (he came within 7 miles of my house) was much longer and more puzzling as to why they didn't (yet) bust his stupid ass. The chase lasted over an hour, the whole debacle about 3.
This tape doesn't show it but he swerved at a motorcop twice then just blew him off. The cops kept losing him but TV didn't!
He previously had a DUI, some unidentified warrants and one for being a "no show" at his DUI hearing & bail forfeit.
I watched the "highlight reel" and don't dispute the 140MPH statement at all.
Too many cops, too many jurisdiction's and too few arrests or smackdowns.:070: :072:
Note: Add this to my long list of why I hate metro areas and will be in the boondocks, a la Dean-O, in less than a year.

So many questions! For example, what sort of bikes were the cops on? Not very snappy acceleration there, 'eh? And who would choose an expressway to make a get-away? Stick out like a sore thumb. And where we our quadricycle cops? Where was the police chopper? Where was O.J.?
And, what have we learned?
Clean out the garage for Pete's sake! Makes it easier to hide.

At least one of the bikes was an RT-P and the Yammie spanked him good & proper! When asked why he didn't continue pursuit, the cop said "Sometimes you just have to stop & think about what's best for you and your family...and decide to catch him another day"!
They finally caught the moron, arrested him for the chase and served the 4 old warrants.
Score 1 for the people who hate bikes..."bullet bikes" as the TV dude explained it.

Well gents,
I ride an RT and an R1, and I can tell you why the cops didn't catch him - THE R1 HAS OVER TWICE THE HORSEPOWER - it.s like a Porsche Turbo Carrera being chased by a Dodge Neon. See ya! Of course the news helicopter could follow him - helicopters are faster than motorcycles, even those pushing 200HP!
140 really is not fast on the R1. At track day I am yawning and not even tucked at 120, that thing is just a monster. I have never had it on a long, flat, straight piece of road, but it wouldn't take much of a clear lane on the freeway to spank it up to 140! On my RT, I don't think I could get it that high unless I threw it off a cliff. I got a buck 15 on the RT once on a lonely road just North of Dean-o's place, but that's about all she's got in her.
My riding buddy here is a local cop - he's a canine sergeant now but he was a motor officer for 5 years. His department has a no pursuit policy for traffic violations here in the city, and all the squids know it. He said squids get away from them every single day - and if they don't get their tag number first, then that's it - no repurcussion for the squid. Many of the squids have servo-controlled rotating plate mounts so they can hit a switch and hide their tag. They also sneak in to Phoenix airport because the police helicopters cannot pursue them there much of the time due to airspace restrictions. They just park, go in, have a cup of Starbicks, take the bus home, come back and get their bike later.
Not sure what the answer is - remote engine cut-offs? Speed governors? I think we would all be the first ones to protest these moves to our respective elected officials. As long as teenage boys are young, dum, and full of ... you get the idea - we will have these issues. Maybe if they made evasion carry a mandatory 30 day jail term on the first offense no questions asked, that would cut down on it - but other than deterrence, there isn't too much we can do about this.
Thanks for sharing the clip.

OK, everybody just cool down here...this is not the big deal we thought.
Perfectly justified, perfectly understandable.
In fact this nice young man could very well have become a real victim here, he really needs our understanding...and love.
His family has come out with a statement that exonerates this fine fellow. It seems he is a diabetic and sometimes he has a reaction to his insulin and that is surely the reason for his erratic misbehavior.
Personally I think they should lock up the little prick, without his insulin of course...wouldn't want him to become erratic again.
Then they should slap his mama for that lame ass "defense".

Deej - The rancor on that site is very common on "squid" sites. The R1 site is particularly bad, I finally removed all my bookmarks to it. But on the other end of the spectrum is the equally (IMO) offensive tendency by jack-booted Stalinist site administrators to erase any comments that they don't agree with, and to ban people who question their "authority". That is really ass-holeus.

2.) How many here have gone over 100 MPH on a freeway?
3.) How many have gone over 120 MPH on a public roadway or freeway?

10.) Last but not least... How many of you have ever *run* from, or tried to evade, a law enforcement officer in pursuit, anywhere, at any time in your life?
Please, I am serious here. Try to answer each question as truthfully and honestly as you can.

8.) How many have ever *raced* another motorcycle on a public roadway, for any distance? Guilty
9.) If you do exceed the posted speed limit on public roadways, how often do you do and by how much? 0-15 MPH on the highway most of the time, 0-10 MPH in town, except in school zones

1.) How many here have gone over 100 MPH on a public roadway?
May have done, but that was a long time ago.
2.) How many here have gone over 100 MPH on a freeway?
May have done, but that was quite a while ago.
3.) How many have gone over 120 MPH on a public roadway or freeway?
Never.
4.) How many have exceeded the posted speed limit on any public roadway?
By how much? Never more that ten over indicated, which means on a Beemer, just at the limit...
5.) How many have received traffic citations for exceeding the speed limit?
Once, long, long ago, in what seems an entirely different galaxy.
6.) How many have ever done a wheelie or brakie on a public roadway?
Never, except for one inadvertent wheelie that threw my first wife off the back of the machine. Note: I said first, meaning ex.
7.) How many have ever cut through freeway traffic at a speed in excess of the posted limit?
Almost never. I will only do so if it is a "Back off or be gone." situation. There are too many loonies out there who get passed off too readily to justify acting the squid.
8.) How many have ever *raced* another motorcycle on a public roadway, for any distance?
Never.
9.) If you do exceed the posted speed limit on public roadways, how often do you do and by how much?
Um, couple, three, four times a ride, but never more than 10 over, see above.
10.) Last but not least... How many of you have ever *run* from, or tried to evade, a law enforcement officer in pursuit, anywhere, at any time in your life?
Never.

FYI, I read where a rider in either Norway or Denmark was arrested over video on the internet shot by himself that showed him going 140mph on public roads.
Myself, I have an open ticket for going way too fast on an empty freeway in the middle of the day on a nice sunny winter day. Was not paying attention to LEO's, & got pulled. Its going to cost me some serious $$ one way or the other, and I have turned over a new leaf and will keep the speed under control in the future. I swear.

These days I generally look for a "front door" which will attract the police and give me a chance to back off. I still drive fast, just not all the time, I pick and choose the spots. If I'm in traffic, I tend to go just a bit faster than the general flow.
It used to be that one only had the truckers (with CB's) to dime you out. With everyone having cell phones, I try not to bring any attention to myself.
I'm getting better, Bonnie says I'm a work in progress. I think she means that in a good way. :037:

Just so you guys don't think I am skipping my own test, here's my answers:
1.) ...Over 100 on a roadway? Absolutely. All the time. Hell, at Big Bend I'm pretty sure Dean and I were over 100 more than we were under it...
2.) ...Over 100 on a freeway? Ditto. All the time. Better to be passing folks than mired among the cagers. Then you only have to conentrate on what's in front of you...
3.) ...Over 120? Guilty again. I can't do it much with the R1150R since mine won't go but around 130, but with bikes I've owned I did all the time... And I am really looking forward to the Yammie FJR's ability to do this with aplomb.
4.) ...Exceed the posted limit? I have to say that I am literally always above the posted limit by at least 5 MPH... Except in School Zones where I am almost always under the posted limit - Oh, and when the radar detector goes off...
5.) ...Speeding tickets? So many in my driving lifetime, in cars and on bikes, that I could easily paper a few walls in my house. Most didn't *stick* in the later half of my vehicle career, and I haven't had one in nearly two years now... Guess I am becoming less visible as I grow older.
6.) ...Wheelies or brakies? Well, I'm not worth a damn at brakie's anymore, and the Beemer doesn't wheelie that easily, so not much in the past few years... Earlier? All the time if I had the right sled. Geez, I evfen looped one over backwards on a downtown city street once.
7.) ...Cut through traffic? Guilty again. See #2 above...
8.) ..."Raced" another vehicle? Too, too many times... Drag raced, roll-on raced, top end raced, point to point raced in the twisties, etc.... All the time. After all, why do they call it the Human *Race*?
9.) ...Do exceed the posted limit? Well, I guess you might have gathered by now I do it quite often, and literally with what I think I can get away with. I think licensing should be speed-tiered, and based on experience and lack of accidents. Morons should have to go slow, while guys like us should not have a limit...
10.) ...*Run* from an LEO? Yep, many times... Especially on bikes, and only snagged once, but I was younger then. Haven't done it in... Well... A while I guess.
I guess I could have been the kid in the video, especially when I was younger. Like my old mentor and buddy, Jack Connolly used to say...
"If you run from 'em in a car and they catch you, that's understandable. If you run from 'em with a bike and get caught it's your own damn fault. It is hard to outrun Mr. Motorola, though..."
Dean - just out of curiosity, what do you think our average speed was on the Big Bend ride?
Cheers!

How far was it from Terlingua to Alpine???
78 miles if I recall correctly... Of course, we did stop on the side of the road a couple of times, and had to stop at the Border Patrol checkpoint. Still, we did cover that 78 mile distance a fair amount under an hour, and we had to wait 10 bloody minutes for that damn mile long friggin' train!

I supose this forum is obscure enough to come clean. I got nabbed about a month ago for 110 in a 65 (freeway). Did not write me up for reckless, so thats a small consolation. Its still a 2 point ticket that I understand the insurance companies look at as just this side of a DWI. I figure if the ticket sticks it will cost me at least $5,000 a year for 3 years between my work trucks, car & bike & kids coming car. Couldn't talk the LEO down, he was not a rider. May loose my license for a month (its the judges discretion), the top ticket lawyer wants $3,600 plus a possible $3,000 for an appeal, if needed. Attorney has a bit less than a 95 percent success rate, so what the hell. One good side is there is no possibility of jail.
What bothers me the most is the potential for losing my license. It seems so childish. Will be a pain to explain to kids, parents & employees. No matter what the outcome, I don't see myself doing the ton again on a public road, just not worth the potential down side. Has definately taken some joy out of riding, but then again I am starting to learn to enjoy a 70mph indicated (I take that to be 65mph actual) ride. I am sticking to the limit religiously as I suspect a judge will look dimly on addtional tickets prior to this thing being worked out.
Luckily the freeway I commute on only has a few on/off ramps, as my speed now puts me in the slow lane. Definately have to watch the cagers around ramps. Its almost like the slower speeds make me more likely to crash, but OTOH, maybe more likely to survive the crash.
What the hay.

Bob,
Yes indeed, it does suck. Lucky for me I didn't buy that K1200R I was lusting over a few months ago, I think I'd have spent some time in jail.
At least with the RR there really isn't a question about running. Here in LA its pretty much PRISON TIME if they catch a runner. Not worth the risk for me.
The lawyer thing has me intrigued. Should be interesting if nothing else. Sad thing is if the chippie wrote me up for under 100 I'd have taken my lumps & pled out.
All in all, this may well make me a safer/better rider.

DC-295, coming back from HD of Southern Maryland, or some such nonsense. They did not see fit to snap a picture of my buddy on his baby Sportster. Maybe they felt bad for him...?
Here is a site that shows the fixed camera locations in DC. Also, they have about a dozen mobile radar cameras as well:
http://mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,a,1240,q,548201,mpdcNav_GID,1552,mpdcNav,|318 86|.asp
Rob,
That seriously sucks. Four of us got popped for 85 in a 55 last year. A lawyer charged us $400 each plus travel costs to get it reduced to 65 in a 55. That is considered a 'waste of finite resources' charge in AZ, $35 fine and not a moving violation.
That lawyer sounds way out of line, must be that socal tax. Does he claim to be able to get the ticket dismissed for that, or just get the charges reduced? I'd be inclined to shop around. Another idea may be to call the prosecutors office (don't know if that's an option in CA), to inquire about getting the charges reduced and then pleading to a lesser charge.
After that last stop, and the untimely death of a couple of friends, I've slowed considerably. Since I'm rapidly approaching 60 and the reflexes aren't what they used to be, its probably a good thing.
I've rediscovered some great scenery and I just got 2000 more miles from a set of tires. I guess speeds and temps over 100 are not condusive to long tire life.
Good Luck

It feels totally unfair, given that you have to spend all that attention on the road to avoid getting hurt when it's other people's bad driving. But MC never get a slack!

The lawyer gets most dismissed outright.
Doesn't seem to be way to pre plead out a ticket here, have to ask for a trial, & then, maybe, walking into courtroom there can be some negotiations.
This guys office would handle it for $2,500, its $3,500 if the top guy does the trial, and an extra $100 if they handle the pretrial paperwork. Otherwise I would have to appear to ask for the trial. I figure might as well go all out for the gold plated experience. Not sure a cheap lawyer is ever a good deal if you are serious about winning. BTW, I understand I do not even have to be present in court for the trial, although it might be a nice diversion. If I loose I can appeal & drag this out for quite awhile.
The $3,600 hurts, but I was on business at the time, so I suspect my corp. will pick up the tab.
I understand the lawyer's office supeanas something like 7 or 8 people (supervisors?), and makes dozens of pretrial motions, basically just buries them. My only fear is the chippies will be gunnin for me afterwards.
Part of the reason I may go the lawyer route is the LEO was pretty unprofessional. I really thought he was going to draw down on me to the point I was sitting on the bike with my hands in the air, actually somewhat worried I might get shot. He was very very pissed off before we ever said a word to each other. If I was black I suspect I would have taken a beating.
