I was just watching the news tonight and they reported that drivers in Southern Illinois have a 1 in 187 chance of hitting a deer on the road while driving. I'm lucky I don't live in West Virginia though, where they have a 1 in 57 chance!!

NE Iowa is bad too. I've hit something like 10 (None with a bike though!) And my Dad claims to have hit a dozen with his current truck alone. (2004 Chevrolet)

He had a wrecker bumper put on the front when new, so they just kind bounce off.

There was a news report on one of the local stations this week. OPP Sargeant Cam Woolley reported that this is the start of "large animal strike" season, and based on history the OPP is predicting around 5,000 collisions involved deer and moose in Ontario between October 1 and December 31. That is 54 per day. The 2006 Census counted 12,160,282 Ontarians so that is a 1 in 2,432 chance (assuming that all Ontarians drive!). Somehow I suspect the odds are much higher here in my piece of Canada!

We have the same problem with kangaroos down here.

I would say 50% of our "utes" have these roo bars fitted.

Watch out for the elk crossing signs in eastern KY. In moose country I might try driving a sports car, so I could go under them.

Somewhere in South Africa, someone is saying, "That's nothing! Wait 'til you see a bull elephant in the road."

Oh boy. Just lost my '07 Adventure to a deer last month. There's a bunch around here too.

Came home last night from chorus rehearsal at about 7:30... fully dark. There was a fresh killed carcass DOR about a mile from my road just at the start of a sweeping left-hander. This morning, on my way in, as I was coming off the apex of the same curve, now a sweeping right-hander, several black vultures flew off the carcass and I swear I had to duck to get under one of them. Like to scared the shit outta me!
