Does anyone have any good input on a radar detector that is best for motorcycling? Thanks a bunch for any help.

I have both a Valentine One and an Escort 8500. I prefer the arrows of the V1, but it doesn't play nice with my GS. The Escort falses less than the V1, but you have to guess about the direction of the signal.

That said, both work very well. If radar is in use ahead of you, the warning can be up to a mile in advance. If you're riding alone and get hit with instant on, you're toast.

I feed the audio from the detector through a mixer and into my ear plugs. I've tried the HARD unit but kept killing the batteries.

Most people like the V1, but the Passport 8500 does just as well. For me, I don't care where the radar is coming from, I slow down anyway. And I mount mine under the clear map window on the tankbag, so I couldn't see it anyway. I could put a map over it to hide it, or put my gloves on top of it if I got pulled over. I like that better than having it mounted separately in plain sight and it comes off the bike with the tankbag. For where I keep it, the 8500 has a smoother shape; no sharp edges. The newer 9500i has GPS built in, and those upgrades are useful in the car. My 8500 is now dedicated to the bike instead of moving back and forth. One nice thing about the Passports is they integrate nicely into laser "shifters" (jammers). The V1 doesn't, but it's expensive to do that.

I run the HARD system from legalspeeding.com and really like it. The batteries last quite a while for me, unless I leave the switch on.

I run the V1 and it done the job for the last three years very well. I use the suction cups to attach it to the windscreen on my R11S and it's never bounced off. I have a velcro safety strap just in case. Laser is becomming the weapon of choice by more of the LEO's in GA. Ka ban radar (instant ON) is what the state troopers seem to prefer. If you are running hard without two finger on the brake you're toast with the laser warning you get from the V1.

Harry, I used to live on Park Ave. in Chandler just north of Ray Rd and west of Arizona. I prolly wouldn't recognize the place now.

Don't know how long its been since you've been here, but I've lived in the same house for 20 years. There have been a few changes.

The 202 Freeway now runs from I10 at Pecos Ave, through Chandler, Gilbert et al, linking up to US 60 around Elsworth. Alma School Rd is completely developed down to Sun Lakes. Arizona Ave is more or less completely developed all the way down to Ocotillo Rd. The old Valley National Bank building in Downtown Chandler is now a Microbrewery.

Things have certainly changed.

I've used the same V1 for the past 5 years, in my truck and on my bikes. I also use helmet speakers taken from a broken open par of headphones from Kmart for ten bucks. I can hear them no problem over my earplugs, and the set up has saved me from untold road vampire revenues and points.

The ear is faster than the eye.

It takes a half hour to install the speakers into an Arai Quantum, and I assume any other helmet. You'll need the remote audio adapter as well. Very small components, all go into the top of the tank bag and radar will go right through the plastic and give you a strong signal.

Instant on isn't right; it's so wrong. Dadgummed vampires.

I can't believe it's been this long;but, I left there in Sept of '80. I was a T-38 in structor pilot at Williams AFB. My first daughter is a native Arizonian. Year-round riding season and great road upon the rim back then. It was a great team effort at Daytona. I hope to make it to the moto-st events next year. For now I'm plnning a trek to Alaska next summer on the R11S.

Dean, I'd love to get out there. I've promised my daughter that I'd get her back out to see her desert roots and I aim to make good on that promise. I've got to admit that up on the rim is pretty close to heaven. I did get into Phoenix and Tucson when I was flying for NWA. You guys are doing quite a bit to keep BMW before the public and I apprecite that as a BMW owner. I'm looking forward to next season.

Will, I assume that you are using a Blue Tooth rig or if not could you take a picture and post it please. I need the aural warning because I don't always see the light show on my V1 in time. What was the total cost to get the rig up and running?
