I spent yesterday morning with Land Speed Racer Jon Minonno in Fort Worth. Jon formerly rode for the Team Triumph Texas & Big 'D' Cycle LSR teams. Jon set the record of 235+ MPH on Ed Mabry's dual-engine, turbo, methanol-nitro fueled, dual-engine Triumph partial streamliner, and many others.
Jon now is R&D Mgr. for D&D Exhaust in FW, mainly running the dyno for new exhaust development. Jon & D&D owner Dave Rash have partnered on design, construction & development of "Boarzilla", powered by a heavily modified S&S 101 Cubic inch engine with a single turbo & methanol/nitro fuel. They hold a 225.819 MPG record in the APS-PBF 1650 class (Altered frame, Partially Streamlined - Pushrod, Blown, Fuel 1650CC engine), and the engine has been marginally enlarged to run in the 2000CC segment of that class. Top timed run to date is 228+.
The frame is a one-off construction of extra-thick wall chromemoly 4130 tubing. On the starting line, Boarzilla and Jon weigh a combined 1,016 lbs. Jon has only had to add 12 lbs. of weight for balance & traction.
The shape of the fairing, typical of Texas LSR champ bikes is..."unconventional". It is a flat-bottom with minimal ground clearance like Ed Mabry's triumphs, but it also adds a little frontal area for the benefit of a more enclosed, lower drag shape.
The long-wheelbase machine is exceptionally stable and has a 60/40% rear/front weight distribution, ideal for maximum traction & stability.
The design skills & craftsmanship of Jon and the craftsmen of D&D are quite remarkable, and Jon's engine building skills are legendary !
They believe the motorcycle will run 250 in this configuration.

Meet Boarzilla...

And the nekkid Boarzilla...

The turbo "exhaust" is seen here (large black pipe), along with the waste gate (small black pipe) that prevents the turbo from over-boosting the engine. It allows the adjustable waste gate to open and pass the excess pressure.
The engine is boosted to only 15psi.
The engine has a pre-run-only adjuster for 4 power levels from ~300-400 HP, and approximately the same torque values. They are now running at ~330 and slowly developing the bike's many systems to handle more. Jon doesn't think they will ever need, or be able to use the top ~400 HP level. It would just go up in wheelspin and make Boarzilla a very dangerous porker !

This should be rotated too...

Engine uses 4 injectors...2 in plenum, 2 "downstream" in intake tract.

These "deep breathing" injectors are from a propane engine & inject LOTS of fuel !

This is sort of a "waste gate" in reverse...when the throttle is closed, it allows the turbine to keep spinning by allowing air to enter the vacuum in the (formerly) pressurized blower-to-plenum tract. This prevents "turbine stall" and a dead engine that can't re-start.

Jon's chest rests here when he is flying...the "175" sticker is a licensing threshold. You must display this to go...fast.

Yes, Rog...there is a lot of love in those welds, and all the rest too.
None of the 3-4 guys who conceptualized, designed, built, race & develop this machine have college degrees. Even more amazing.
Experience...yes.
Skills...yes.
Dedication...yes.
Love...absolutely !

Thanks Dave.
I bet that welder guy spends a fair amount of his day just looking for things to weld...
A great piece of engineering all the same.
But I'm really impressed with the fuel economy for such a powerful engine...

Cheers,

JQ.
