Was hoping someone could answer this question for me. I want to mount the Hepco Becker crashbars on my 2002 R1150R. The question is, will these bars prevent me from using the accessory plug provided on my bike near the driver side footpeg. The good folks at Premier Cycle were unsure but agreed to hold off shipping my order until I found out. I never gave it a thought, but was on a thread on another site that showed a crashbar level picture, broadside, and it looked as though the outlet was inaccessable. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Welcome to our little gaggle of motorcycle weird-o's!

I don't know about those crash bars and the plug on your beak, but it begs the question, why do you want those big-ass bars on your beautiful little roadster? The jugs stick out just fine and if you have the tupperware head protectors on, your bike should be able to withstand quite a tipover, or worse.

When I was a young whippersnapper starting out in motorcycling back in the late 70's early 80's I always mounted metal 'case savers" to protect the cylinders of the big air-cooled inline fours of that day. At least once they saved me from ruining an engine when I low-sided on the San Diego Freeway in San Diego at speed (ah to be young and in the Navy...). On a modern BMW Roadster they may be overkill. i am not trying to be Mr. Smarty-pants and you may well have thought about all that, but I just wanted to raise the point.

To tell the truth, I completely agree with Bob, not the gay mole, by the way. Crash bars such as those reduce cornering ground clearance and if you ding a valve cover, just buy a new one, less than the crash bars. I have been riding Beemers since '72 and have never used such bars.

If ya really want head guards go to http://www.jimmyjib.com/guards.htm
Good stuff, he's a serious BMW dude. They WILL protect the heads.

Isn't there a place for a second accessory plug to be mounted near the passenger foot peg...that might help.

I know this question is a bit dated but in case someone else is thinking about buying these crash bars for their R1150R, be warned; they are not easy to install. However, having just installed them on my 2004, I can tell you that they do NOT interfere with the accessory plug.

You macho guys crack me up. How many of you carry epoxy to patch the oil-seeping hole in your valve covers?

I use stainless steel BMW engine protection bars I got used from the "GS List" years ago. My GS is a well-oiled '96 dinosaur that'll do it all without the antenna ring do-hickie that gives me shudders when I'm far out on route 3 south of Weaverville in the boonies. Sure, I wish I had a 1200 like Dean and the gang. But I digress.

Crash bars and even system cases (they are strong and make the bike easier to pick up) are far, far better than letting your machine slide down the ass-fault on your pathetic, plastic BMW protector band aid. I know; they're not macho.
They're not even Walter Mitty-esque. But when your fat jugs hang all the way out like that, a little prudence seems apropos, to me at least.

And if any of you denizens of the wilds are dragging your valve covers, I'm aghast. My boots hit the tarmac first, pegs second, and I've never dragged a valve cover. But the race bikes do drag them, and that's why their valve covers have little ovals of metal (prob'ly Ti) placed judiciously.

Have fun out there, melting tires and scraping heads! You are my true role models. And, when your big jugs stick way the hell out in the line of fire, protect them, says I.

Luddite! Without that antenna doohicky some other BMW rider might screw with your ignition. Shudder. Your not actually riding a bike without 4 gigabytes of RAM are you? Was that GS made LAST CENTURY?????:pot:

Hang in there. I'll email you a fix on my Iphone.

The crash bars will not interfere with the accessory socket. Here's an image showing the bars in relation to the plug:

Also, the Wunderlich and Hepco Becker are the same bars...

Crash bars like those made for the Roadster severely limit the leaning angle of the bike. A big verboten in my book.
