View Full Version : R1150R...
Hey folks with R1150Rs...
Thought you be interested to know just how much in demand the R1150R still is.
When I went in for the first service on the KS... I asked Tim (Sales SJBMW) if they had any offers for my Silver Beauty.
Well... he told me they sold it in FOUR HOURS! Rolled it out front of the shop, did not even put it in an ad... a guy saw it, and bought it on the spot. He said it was a new record for the shop.
Sounds like it got a good home... the new owner had SJ put a sport shield and bags on it. I am happy for SJ, and its new owner.

A local salesman was telling me that they send most of their K bike trade-ins to California. Seems used BMW's garner a couple of thousand more there than in Arizona.

Nick and I rode out to LA from Phoenix about 3 years ago and we stopped at a popular motorcyclist stop, the "Top of Topanga" overlooking Woodland Hills as you drive over from the beach. We saw a completely black, small bike with BMW roundels on each side of the tank and some dude in all black standing next to it and smoking a cig. Nick recognized the bike immediately as a Kawi 250 Ninja with a black paint job and roundels and when he asked the guy "Is that a Ninja" he just laughed and said "yeah" :eusa_drool:

I still have the sport and touring shields off of my R stashed in the garage. I hope to pickup another 1150R someday to use as a commuter.

I still wish I had my R1150R. One of the best looking, well made, jack-of-all trades motorcycles you can find.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. It would be a favor to me, but not my bank account. :icon_cry:

Exactly.
Interestingly the wife made a comment the other day about me getting a new BMW. Something to the affect of, "You loved that BMW, so why don't you just get a new one and stop messing around with all these other motorcycles. Just get what you really want and stick with it..." :058:
Unfortunately, I still can't justify the cost with our current situation.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure it's quite in the budget at the moment. Once I get the new coils and wires on the Triumph, I'm hoping it runs well enough so that I can stave off new bike fever for at least a year.

I shouldn't be doing this... but I threw this together at lunch. Helps keep most of the numbers in one place. I thought others may, at some point, find it useful. So I wanted to post it.
I only included bikes I would seriously consider. (The K1200S is on my list, but I couldn't find some of the numbers online, and the ones I did were very near the K1200R sport which is already on the list)
I agree the 50R is a great all around street bike. I had an '02 and then an '04. The best feature beside the good looks was the OD top gear. I did a bunch of Interstate riding on mine, making quick work of my 200 mile twice monthly commute up to Kansas City.
But, I fell for the Dark Side seduction after I found a cream puff "Zebra" paint K1200RS. $10K, 3000 miles, every BMW option, carbon hugger, PIAA, etc. Stumbled upon it actually, spotted it in a grocery store parking lot at 8 am Sunday, for sale, 30 minutes after the owner dropped it off.
Sorry, 50R, no contest as a highway bike.
I tried for months to sell my 50R. Craigslist, big city newspapers, no nibbles. Priced to sell I thought, $7k, bags and windshield, 4200 miles. Nothing.
My dealer gave me more than that on a trade.
It was a great bike, but it was more money than I wanted to tie up in a collectable, unridden BMW.
As much motor as it might have, all the updates, @$16k, the R1200R holds no interest to me.
Hey Jason... tried to open the attached list... but it did not convert...

Hey Jason... tried to open the attached list... but it did not convert...
It needs to be "unzipped" (http://www.winzip.com/index.htm) and then opened in Excel. It's merely a list of a few of the BMW's I'm considering, their options and costs.
I can e-mail if anybody would prefer. Not sure you'll need it, since you have that new sweet black stallion.
Thanks Jason and Dave... I unzipped it, but for some reason it kept trying to open through Word... Saved it to disk, then force an Excel open process.
I see you have the center stand listed... for the KS they actually have to cut the fairing a bit to put the center stand on. Something that convinced me not to do it, at least at first. Its recommended to alway put the KS in gear, if no center stand. Of course that wont help much for changing a tire, etc...
Also I thought I would get an alarm too... but since the key have an immobilzer for engine... I figured I may not... and mine didnt have it from the factory.
Saddle bags - check
Computer - check... did not think I would used... but do all the time
Heated grip - check
TPM - did not get that, and dont miss it... of couse if I had it, I might think it was wonderful
ESA - check... did not think I would use... but do all the time...
ABS - check (its very transparent by the way, and so is the linked braking)

You Cali guys may want to consider LoJack on your bike. I didn't realize I had it on mine until I looked at the dealer invoice when I re-registered the bike in Virginia.

Continuing my investigation into new BMW's, I looked at the power / weight of each bike and compared them back to the R1150R. If anybody wants a spread sheet or would like me to add some figures or other models, let me know. I'd rather e-mail than keep uploading files to the cafe and using bandwidth here.
An interesting figure I came across while looking into drive train efficiency was the F800 belt drive puts down 96.5% of it's rated engine power. The shaft drive seems to put down about 84%. I'm getting these numbers from a post Dean made on AdvRider.com link (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4702573&postcount=83)
It appears that the F800 puts down nearly the same amount of torque and almost 11 extra horses over the 1150R, while weighing about 70 pounds less... and gets 55-65 mpg.
Interesting... but the F800 prolly does it across a narrower and higher RPM.

I looked up some dyno graphs. The 50R does make more power down low, but I don't know if I'd call the F800 power band "narrow". I'd guess the 70 pound difference in weight makes up for the slightly lower torque ratings down low. :028: (uh-oh, I think Dean's slipped me the Kool-Aid)
This graph shows a stock 50R as Blue, and a "chipped" 50R in red:
