Long story short - ended up in the CAT scan machine at my local ER today - they found a large kidney stone and gave me a bunch of pain medicine and told me to rest.

Never know what the new day will bring. Guess I won't be going to Miami or Arby's - UGGGH!

Hope you feel better. Does this mean you have to pass it?

Oh no!!!!

You got good drugs right? A little Bourbon on top of that will take the edge off.
I've never been thru it Bob, but I feel for you brother. I hear it ain't fun.
If's there's anything I can do for you, yell...although I'm sure you'll be doing plenty of that.

Bob - I don't envy you. One of my brothers suffers from these intermittently. It is no fun.

My its passing be quick and (relatively) painless.

Here's hoping you are back to pristine condition in the shortest time possible!

I'm a longtime sufferer of kidney stones. I had one blasted by ultrasound when I was 17 and one pulled right out from "down below" 2 years ago. I have passed many in between the procedures. I would not wish that pain on anyone. They come on fast and depending on where you are, you may be screwed. Just saying kidney stone will get you to the front of the line in most ERs. After some begging, I got a prescription for vicodin just in case while I travel to Singapore. Hopefully your stone will pass on it's own. Most pass within a few hours. I really don't recommend the extraction from the man region, it's quite the violation...

I haven't had any pain so far at all - and I am going to Singapore at the end of the month. They said it is 4mm and located in the top of my left kidney. Doc gave me a bottle of Oxycodone and told me I'd need it, but so far so good.

Peeing through a little screen is totally goofy, though! :icon_redface:

Bob,

On occasion I get 'em too... but fortunately, and somewhat interestingly, only in the form of almost microscopic crystals... and usually in times of great personal stress...

Dont know if my exercise work-outs bust 'em up into tiny bits before they have a chance to get big... or whatever... but so far no big ones.

Hoping for the best for you.

 Bummer!

I had one of those a few years ago and qwhile the nice nurse at the emergency room did everything she could, she said they typically send you home (after x-rays or CAT scan). Luckily she hooked up an IV to help flush open the tubes from the kidneys to the bladder to help it pass easier. I got to hang out in the ER late on a saturday night and heard some rather funny descriptions of 'emergencies'.

I think keeping your body over hydrated helps the process and pissing in the funnel is to know that you did pass it, and then they can analyze what it's comprised of so you can change your diet. If this is your first one, I wouldn't be to concerned about it unless you start getting them frequently.

Maybe if you drink white vinegar, it'll dissolve.

Sorry to make light of your painful situation. But it's hard not to. Being insensative is a guy thing, you know.

I’ve watched my dad go through a few of those. Not cool. For him, the torment appeared monumental. For the rest of us, it was kind of like having a wounded grizzly bear in the house.

You have my sympathies.

Damn Bob, I've been there and feel for you. Keep the pills handy. If you're lucky you will need a handful soon. I had a little one show up in 1980. Speck of sand size. Almost 20 years later it made itself known at about 1". 3 lithotripsies later I have about a 3mm chunk left. It's been 8 years now and it hasn't grown or passed. But one of these days I know what is in store for me.:smilie_bier2:

Hi guys -

I got to see my CAT scan today - that's kind of a trip. Looks like I'll have an uncomfortable couple of days or so, but as soon as that stone passes I'll be back up on the bike. Thanks for all the well-wishes and ball-breaking. I'm going to take some more of those good pain drugs now . . .

Trust me you don't want pics.

My kidney is a little sore and I am still trying to flush the stone out by drinking lots of water. Actually came in to my office today, but I sure am running to the bathroom a lot!

As soon as I piss out the stone, I am going to jump on the bike and ride . . . but the thought of riding is pretty unappealing right now :icon_cry:

I've been out of circulation - here's a quick note. Went to the specialist on Thursday and he scheduled me for surgery on Friday (yesterday) to have the stone removed. Amazing how much more the urologist knows about these things than the ER doc or my normal doc!

I felt fine when I went in, no pain at all! I flew back from Singapore on Monday, ran 4 miles at the gym each of Tues, Weds, Thurs. When I came out of surgery yesterday I was in probably the worst pain I've ever been in. They administered Vicodin and this amazing stuff called Toradol. Toradol is the best! If you are ever in horrible pain - get some of this into an IV bag as quickly as possible. It calmed me down enough to go home in the afternoon, but I had another massive pain attack in the evening, and almost went back to the ER but Morpheus got me and was merciful - I was able to pass out at home.

I'm still on the Vicodin - going to rest some more.

Oh - the good news, the surgery was done without an incision. That's also the bad news. Ouch.

Bob, My Brother, hang in there. Toradol IS good, got it myself when I broke some ribs on a YZ490 on my 40th birthday, yea I know, 40 IS a tad old for that bike.

Ahhh -

Back up and at 'em today. In the office, walking around. It's great to be alive. And ambulatory. And not on painkillers. With nothing shoved up my ding-dong.

Hope to be back in the gym by the end of the week.

I had my post-op follow-up with the urologist today. He had the analysis of my stone back - said it was 95 percent calcium oxylate, which is harder than bone, and was "arrowhead" shaped, which is why is was such a little bugger. So, I need to limit my intake of:

beets, chocolate, coffee, cola, nuts, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, tea, and wheat bran.

I've given up cola, but drank a LOT of it over the past year, which may have contributed to the stone forming. I've cut back to one cup of coffee a day. I'll watch the nuts. Been drinking more tea - will have to cut that out. Never did care much for rhubarb.

Well - as I left the urologists office, I told him thanks, but I really hope I never have to see him again! I really hope that's the last chapter of my kidney stone woes . . .

Bob,
I wouldn't sweat the diet change too much only because of the stone. I had mine analyzed after 'passing' it and they gave me similar suggestions. The way I saw it, I took over 30 years to develop that stone, if I go another 30 then I'm ok with it. Now if you got another in a fairly short amount of time, then change the diet.

Glad you got rid of it.

05-16-2007, 06:14 PM
Well guys, I intend to keep the old ding-dong as strictly "one-way" flow in the future, so I am going to do anything within my power to keep from having surgical instruments stuffed up it again :yikes:

I guess that means my days of mixed nuts and diet coke are over :icon_cry:

Could be worse - I could own a Purple Turdus as my primary vehicle . . .

Thanks Rog! I rode a little last weekend, but I have canceled plans to ride to Hot Springs this weekend for the ADV event. I am really trying to keep my options open for Sipapu, though.

PS - Beer good. Not good for me, but gooooood!

Sure, anything that either dehydrates you, or causes lack of hydration can precipitate stones if one is already inclined toward them.

And with all the airplane traveling that Bob does, that can make it worse.

Not sure if you drink Bob, but even relatively small quanitities, when you are already dehydrated, can also increase the probability of getting stones.

Nuts because of the fat content which is not water soluble... and can "slow" down hydration.

BobFV1
05-17-2007, 05:39 AM
Hi guys. My urologist did have several ideas. He said that living in Arizona, where I may have had chronic, mild dehydration may have had something to do with it. All the long-haul airplane travel may have as well - combination of dehydration and sitting in one position (this condition may be more common in long haul airline pilots). Also - five cross-country trips on motorcycles last year may well have contributed too - mainly the dehydration factor.

My stone was 95 percent Calcium Oxalate. The oxalate is was causes the calcium to precipitate out, and what I need to watch in foods like nuts, cola, beets, black tea, etc. My doc, and the literature, all think that staying well hydrated is the most important factor in prevention - but I am going to watch those pesky oxalates from now on!
