Two riders were killed on Yarnell Hill, a favorite of Arizona motorcyclists leaving the Phoenix area and headed for Prescott and points North.
I knew both of them. One was a passing acquaintance, the other a friend who had a few discussions with me in the month leading up to the horrible accident. He wanted sportbike advice (I was running my R1 on the track a couple of times a month last year) and my advice to him was to get a 600 and get out to trackday or track school.
The last time I saw him was on the day before Thanksgiving. I bought the pair of Oxtar boots from his him which I am wearing right now and turned down his offer to take what would be his last ride with him. He had gone ahead and purchased a new CBR1000. That's a lot of bike. I remember we looked at the map, and I had just ridden over the route the previous Saturday or I may have gone along.
The details of the accident are not really important. Suffice it to say that they both died out at the accident scene after losing control of their motorcycles. It was such a terrible tragedy, and there were a lot of dear friends and families left behind.
Ride safely and carefully out there. Public roads are unpredictable and unforgiving. The most important part of the ride is coming home the same way you left - healthy and alive.
