View Full Version : And down I go....my turn i guess...

Sparing all unnecessary details, a lady that was coming towards me in traffic today took a left turn without looking, and I ended up in her passenger rear quarter panel. No damage to me, except my foot got caught under the bike, enough that my boot came off when I pulled it out. The head and the system case took the brunt of the damage, but judging from the tire rubber and the gouges in the head and the valve cover, without that boxer motor, my knee could be seriously fucked up.
Damage is not much to the bike either, looks mostly cosmetic, but the fork is scratched, the oil cooler cover, head, head cover, bag, and a nick in the rim. I a sure there is more, but that is what i recall off the top of my head.
I am hoping that it isnt totalled...and I dont think that the forks are bent, but they are going to call me tomorrow with the estimate.
He also said that NADA value was like 7400. I looked it up on NADA.com, and it said something like 8900. Looks like I am going to have to do some bitching...
Oh well, at least I feel good, and it is cold as hell here for a while.

Trip, what bike do you have? Did the lady get a ticket?
Glad you are OK.
The Boxer engined BMW is the safest motorcycle made, the cylinders are almost industructable crash gards.

Sorry to hear about it, man! Glad you are okay.
I just traded in a car - the NADA value was not what the industry seems to go by, so you might want to take that in to account. I think NADA values run higher than real Kelly Blue Book values.
Take care - keep us posted.
Oh yeah - ABS or not? Would it have made a difference?

The driver of the car had ABS and apparently, it didn't make any difference.

Kenny,
So sorry to hear about you and your bike. The good part is you are able to write about it. Every time I hear of someone I know going down it makes me be ever so more careful. If I get much more careful I'll not be taking the bike out of the driveway.
Let all just take it a bit more carefully and ride like everyone is out to get us.

Glad you're okay. The bike can be replaced, parts on the bike can be replaced, but you're relatively okay, save walking around bare or sock footed. It can be no consolation to know that you're crash, with someone turning left in front of you is the most common one going for riders.

It's always a good day when you can walk away from a car/bike battle.
You may not feel lucky, but if you think of all the things that could've broken (and didn't), you did well, hombre. Very well.
Parts is parts, but people are forever.
Glad you're ok Trip... those lefties are dangerous...
As Collyer said, you might not feel fortunate...but considering what coulda happened, count your blessings.

Well...I have a 2004 Rockster, and the insurance guy said that he went off of NADA values. They seem a bit high to me as well, but if he said that he was going of of NADA, then he had better back that up. I do not think that it is going to be totalled, but I will know more later.
Yep, I do have ABS. Thing is, while I dont really recall everything exactly, (happened so fast, you know) I remember thinking for that second before I hit, "Wow, this feels like it should be stopping faster than it is." It was a full on panic stop/try to swerve to the left, grab the lever and let the brakes sort it out sort of deal too. Probably just me, and there is certainly a chance that I would have laid it down without the ABS, but I just dont really know. It just felt like it wasnt stopping as fast as I expected it to.
Like most people, I hate the servos, but I am not adamantly against ABS, per se. I also am not blaming the ABS either. Frankly, I am blaming this lady that I hit, but I was(am) really wondering if the ABS made a difference or not.
Thanks for the support guys. Learning a lot hanging out here, and also learned a lot today too. Guess that counts for something too.

You did well here, friend. The Motorcycle/Car interface rarely has pain free results for any of the parties involved.
Just out of interest, were you running with your headlight on? Wearing anything bright? Dark helmet? Light helmet?
This whole issue of why the bastards don't "see" us is, to me at least, something of an enigma.
In 1997 I hit a woman in a Ford who pulled out of a side road into my path. In court she could offer no reason for not seeing me (yet still had the gall to plead "not guilty" to careless driving!) even though all the witnesses had done so.
Worrying.

First things first. Glad you are OK Tripton. That's the only really important fact. Bikes are just "things" much as we can come to love them.
Just out of interest, were you running with your headlight on?
Not to hijack, but, is that an option in England? It's mandatory here for bikes from WAY back.

Glad to hear that you're okay, Trip!
Just a few questions....
What was the speed at which you were traveling before you braked?
What was the time of day?
What kind of gear did you have on?
Whose insurance takes the hit?
Again....good to hear that you're not hurt. The bike should be good as new.

You can wear more than one jock?
Tripton

I was wearing a leather BMW club jacket...which is basically unharmed. Matte black helmet, didnt touch the ground. I dont think a white helmet, siren and flashing cherries would have helped her to see me though.
Im not real sure when the cut off is...like 1975 or so? But all motorcycles here newer than that have to have headlights on all the time.
Well, the speed limit there is 25. I dont recall how fast I was going exactly, but it wasnt a whole lot more than that.
Mostly cosmetic damage, and the fact that I dont have a bike now, but the estimate is $4350.64. This makes it very close to being totalled....and pretty much pisses me off. In Iowa if it is totalled, the owner has first rights to buy it back, and at very low price. Of course, i would be buying a wrecked bike with a salvage title, so it may be just better to go new. However, I have been looking for reasons to black the whole thing out and make it into sort of a high dollar rat bike...
On the other hand they do have a k1200r demo with ESA and ABS that the salesman said he could give me "dazzling" figures for. I also want a 1200GS...preferably a ADV, but I think that that is slightly out of my price range.
But then again, I really really liked that Rockster...
And there is a new r1200r there too...
Or I could get a used ZRX1200 AND a KLR 650.....
Sorry, I am just really antsy about getting a decision from these bastards, and I know that I am just getting started with dealing with them. I will post what information I get out of them.
Oh....I think I was wearing green underwear (jocks?):biggrinbounce2:

Tripton,
Sure am glad you are ok. That really gets the adrenaline going doesn't it? I'm still just a bit jittery from having my rear wheel almost fall off. I'm supposed to pick the bike up at the dealer & don't really look forward to it.:icon_cry:
There sure are some nice rides out there. Maybe its time for a new one for you.
Was most likely the green jocks that did you in. I myself try to go with the tighty whities, 78 percent less chance of accidents.:)

Jocks.... oh. Going "commando" would've prevented it all.

Kenny,
I'm really glad you're O.K.
And if the damage is, as you say, mostly cosmetic, you might be surprised at how cheaply you can get off if you buy the parts from Chicago BMW and do the work yourself. Figure out what parts you need. Find the parts numbers here: http://maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/fiche.asp
...and start wrenching.

Wow. I must say that I am impressed with Progressive Drive insurance.
They went and looked at it today, and the check is in the mail. I will let them deal with her insurance company.
I do believe that it is going to have a few blemishes after the repairs, and what doesnt need to be fixed, might not get fixed, or I will do some of them myself.
Still, damned I am impressed, this is the way that these things ought to happen.

First Kenny, I'm really glad you're ok and it was only the bike that was damaged.
Second, BUGGER!!!, another Rockster down. Pleeeeeese have the bike fixed, as ther's so few of 'em about.
Third, she may genuinely not have seen you! One of our bike mags [England]did a survey recently and they found lots of cars that had such wide windscreen "pillars" that they could lose sight of a truck behind them, let alone a bike. I seem to remember that Peugeot 206CC's came out worst. Still, that doesn't excuse her! If she has a blind spot she must have known it and should have moved her head about to see around the pillar. On second thoughts, that can't have been the reason on a straight bit of road with you oncoming. The pillar blindspot should only apply on places like roundabouts.
Cheers, Steve

Kenny, great to hear you're OK after that mishap. Too often carnage to the rider is the result.
Crikey!
Last time I was sitting in Hong Kong Airport catching up on the board, I read that DJ had gone down.
And now Trip!
I am gonna have to stop reading the site while I am here!
But at least the news sounds good - you weren't hurt!

Have fun with the family and ride all you can.
Got any good China tales?
Never good to hear about a rider having a mix-up with a damn car..almost never comes out as well as this one, so thank our lucky stars Tripton is safe and healthy. The Boxer's safety "edge" shines again.

I hate reading about people having an "off"
I was unfortunate to have the MOST crappy type of motorcycle off (I believe) a week before my 40th birthday
The front wheel bearing on my friends bike siezed / collapsed ! Whilst I was about halfway thru a turn at about 30mph (It had been stored for about a year in a garage but before that it was left outside and water got into the front wheel bearing casings as they are not sealed on the Guzzi's) Basically the front wheel locked on a dry road on a "Nice" day and dumped me off right side into the road and then I started rolling over and over and couldn't stop cos it was on a hill too!! I reckon the bike travelled about 20 feet and got slowed in the long grass and I rolled / bounced on for about 40 feet more
Result one very Battered shaken and stirred Jay and a "Few" small scuffs on the bike! Bike repaired for £100 as it only went about 20 feet onto the grass whereas I bounced and rolled for about 60 too affraid to stick the arm out to stop in case I snapped it
Well I still carry the scars as in aches and pains , I thought y'all might like to see this of "The Bruise" it was taken about a fortnight after the accident! Yet no broken bones just torn and twisted shoulder blade and lightly grazed knee BMW Savanna II jacket took most of the Hit

oops Sorry that is my right side cos people kept turning pale when they asked why I was walking around like a cripple and I showed them that. I took it with my camera phone because we didn't have a mirror in the house that I could see it in?
When it first came up the bruise apparently stretched from about 4 inches from my spine right to my belly button and about 8 to 10 inches deep
That line at the edge right hand upper edge of the picture where the bruise just stops is actually my appendix scar which is about 6 inches long (mine burst)
