A 29-year-old man died Tuesday when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed while riding north on Route 53 in Palatine.

The victim is Jason Lopez of Lake Zurich, police said.

Lopez died after he lost control of his 2001 Triumph motorcycle while traveling in the left lane at a high rate of speed, Illinois State Police officials said.

Police said Lopez lost control while accelerating, drove into the right lane, then into the grass embankment where he hit his head on a guard rail.

He was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m. at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, police said.

Crews were called at 2:39 p.m. to Route 53 just north of Dundee Road, Palatine Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Andersen said.

Lopez crashed the bike north of the Dundee Road entrance ramp, Andersen said. Road conditions appeared normal.

“It was sunny out, traffic didn’t seem to be too bad,” Andersen said. “Everything seemed fine; the road wasn’t wet at all.”

Illinois State Police reduced traffic to one lane on Route 53 in the vicinity of the accident during their accident reconstruction investigation, police said.

No further information was available late Tuesday night."

More details.

He was driving up to his brothers house to take him to the DMV to get is motorcycle license when he crashed. He was riding his brothers old bike. His brother has been riding for a while minus license. Might have been construction at the location. Guard rail impact was the problem, helmet on.

Don't mean to be grandstanding, just sort of hit me. I have had faceplant save me by learning from others mistakes.

The guy at work sort of looks at me as a dad. Nice kid, not a lot of guidance from home.

I see these things on the news and don't think much about it...but when it's someone you know it's a whole different story...what a shame.
