Do you know what engine this is?

As is typical for Honda, they keep all their engines completely under tight, tight wraps - NOBODY sees their internals - that is until they stop using them. Then they open 'em up for all to see...

Above, behold the mighty Honda RCV-211 990cc V-5.

Cheers!

That is a thing of beauty. Unless I am missing something, it looks like it was designed well because it appears to be a combo of sophisitcation and simplicity all at once......which is probably why they ran hard and didn't have a history of blowing up.

It will be interesting to see what happens in MotoGP with the smaller engines. Let's hope they don't start blowing up and failing, so we can enjoy some good racing next season.

And isn't it amazing...

When you saw one cylinder off a 990cc V-5 you get a 792cc V-4 !!!

Want more pics of the engine (wait 'til you see the pistons...)?

Go to:

http://www.crash.net/news_view~t~PICTURES--Inside-the-Honda-RC211V-~cid~6~id~138148.htm

And particularly to:

http://www.crash.net/gallery~cid~6~category_id~226~event_id~japanesegra ndprix_24092006~search_string~rc211v.htm

for a whole bunch...

Love 'em or hate 'em... You gotta' respect Honda if nothing else. They aren't afraid of anybody or anything, period.

Cheers!

Allan,

Quite the bike, quite the shots, thank you for the posting. You were correct about the pistons.:eusa_clap:

I've don't recall being on that site before; I've bookmarked for future visits.

Thank you Allan.

Interesting crank too - 4 mainbearings, two shared con rod journals!
Semi wet sump? Would have been interesting to see where they placed the intake spaggetti.
