So, while MTBing for a few days in beautiful northern New Mexico (Taos), I went to the Sandia Classic http://www.sandiaclassic.net/ vintage M/C show/races/swap meet. Can you say roadracing/trial/supermoto/AHRMA MX/dirt track/cross country all at one location? Neither could I.

[note: I used imagevenue so I could post thumbs that will BLOW up into full-size pics, and keep this post from becoming a dial-up nightmare. Click the thumbs to see a good size pic, click AGAIN and see it full-resolution]

WARNING: do NOT click the thumbs unless you're on DSL or better (or you're cooking dinner) - the full size pics are quite large.

Weather was perfect (Albuquerque, NM) 65?, and cloudless. Not too well attended (Sunday, the final day), but fun nonetheless. The parking lot was the pits (literally), so $10 got you everywhere.
First, the vintage MXers:
Can you say Ducati?

CZ?

A few more classics….. including a Honda 305 scrambler twin – you should hear those straight pipes!!!! It ALMOST spun the tire at the start of the race!!
A Greeves, BSA, AJS, quite few Cottons & Rickman Metisse, many unbelievable Huskys, and a few Pentons (KTMs). A lone Pursang & a couple of Maicos & Hodakas smoked by, too.

I’m just going to post the rest of the decent pics I got, and let you narrate.
Notice the scale of some of these tiny roadracers – Joe w/ the hat is 5’8”, so that Benelli is absolutely tiny.

Here’s a couple of 2006 models:
I feel Smart just looking at this one.

A Honda 50 roadracer - if you have to ask.....

Ducati was the “featured” marque of this year, but no Desmosedici. No Hypermotard either, dammit. Some very nice ‘70s classics, and all the new “classics”, too.

My favorite for the day was this perfect BSA single. Look at the chrome, the details (my reflection in the tank & fender) – I asked the owner to start it – one kick & it was loping like a tractor. That straight pipe isn’t like that for show – it was LOUD!!! It won for best British single.

We had a late lunch at very cool little Indian mkt (Tesuque Village) just north of Santa Fe, and sat next to Robert Redford & his daughter on the terrace - anybody ever see the movie "Little Foss & Big Halsey"? No attitude, but no pictures (he asked, I complied), nice guy. He wouldn't give me his brand new BMW M6, though. Tosser.

DJ can appreciate where I went mountain biking – the caprock is at 7500’, and the gorge is around 550-600ft deep. This is the Rio Grande at it’s gnarliest. One false move and…… Geronimo>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This picture is very deceiving - the river is about 80ft wide, and those are trailer-home sized boulders. The road (it used to be a road) was a 4 lane road in/out of Taos, until the rockslides won the battle. You can see them downslope. Coming back up took an hour to do the section you see here - loose, rocky, 8% grade.....

Thanks Collyer...cool stuff, especially that oh, so tasty blue Goldie Catalina Scrambler! Si, did they sell the Catalinas in the UK? A friend of mine had one in 1982 with road race tires and 18 miles on it!
You guys rode bicycles there in the Royal Gorge!? Did you have to take turns holding the gun on each other?

Collyer

Thanks for the pics. Very good.

They used to have a vintage meet like that up at Steamboat Springs, till the Powers That Be shut it down. I wonder if they moved it to New Mexico ? Fay Meyers held a 4 day dual sport ride as part of the meet.

I've skied Taos before, & saw the Rio Grande Gorge & surrounding country. That is rugged mountain bike riding.

Uhhhh, someone point me towards the "Eye Candy" store, I've not loaded anything there (yet). But I am loaded (hic!). I'll be ahppy to upload all the bikes of old pics.

:smilie_bier2:

I've uploaded a small AVI of the river & surrounding terrain at the "end of the trail", a kind of 360 view of the day. Sorry, no music & no nudity. Boring, but nature can be very subtle in her beauty. All taken with my tiny digital camera (the size of 5 credit cards stacked up).

I missed New Mexico and Albuquerque. The Sandia Crest ride is as tight as anything California has.
