I just barely put a hundred miles on her trying to scrub in the tires, so no canyon twisties yet but just trying to go slightly slow and leaned over the freeway on-ramps and off-ramps trying to scrub in the sides. It's a lot better than the 1st generation Tuono, that's for sure. Much smoother, much faster, more maneuverable. But to be fair, this one has OZ rims and Ohlins rear shock from the Aprilia Nera while my other one had stock rims & suspensions.

Nice work - are those Super Corsas or Rennsports (same tire, different tread)?
Radial front caliper, probably stops better than it goes.
If they are, you are going to LOVE those for carving. For straight line stuff, you may get 3,000 miles.....

Very nice to have the Ohlins & the OZ wheels don't hurt either - be careful of chuck holes though, they are fairly soft (and expensive).

Sweet.

So, would this one be much different?

Don't think the blue wheels add much.

SupermotoC,

The tires are RennSports. I think that they have been superceded by RaceTec tires now because I don't see them listed on the Metzler site any more. I'll give it a whirl this weekend and see how well they stick. I've used Sportec M1 and Diablo tires before so this tire should be a step up, although it's probably just a waste for riding in the canyons. I don't think that I'll be cooking through those twisties fast enough to use these really soft rubbers.

Right now, the bike feels almost flighty. The tip-in is so easy that I swear that I am riding a supermoto, and I think that it's due to both of the RennSport's profile AND due to the lighter weight of the OZ rims.

As far as the Tuono Factory shown on the Raptor & Rocket site, about the only thing that it differs than mine are the various carbon fiber pieces and the front shocks being Ohlins and mine are Showa. I was planning on revalve my front shocks with Ohlins valve kits anyway.

The radial brake is strange. I need to get used to its feel. It feels different than the regular brakes. I don't feel the initial bite, but it slows the bike very quickly and seemingly I can steer better while braking too.

The OZ rims that are on the various Aprilia Factories are forged aluminum and are in that weird blue color. Mine are the same thing except that it got powdercoated black from the original blue color.

The standard rims on the Tuono looks like OZ rims; blue color and all, but they aren't. They're generic cast aluminum rims.

I ran a Rennsport RS1 on the front of my R1150R - best front tire ever!
I still have couple 120/70s left for my Duke II, and I have a couple of 150/60 Super Corsas for the back. Great, sticky, predictable tires, but superceded by the RaceTechs. Nice, nice bike. I'm hoping the SuperDuke is as good, but not too twitchy.

OUTSTANDING!!!

And gorgeous, too... Congrats, congrats, congrats!!! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

Man, oh man, I have always wanted one of those, but there isn't a dealer worth a damn anywhere even remotely close to me, and it is a bit too single purpose for the roads we have aroud here.

If I lived in the Texas Hill Country, like in Leakey or Kerrville, I would have one of those somewhere in the stable in a heartbeat.

Definitely one of my favorite bikes. I envy ya'!!!

Cheers!

hey fn-
been lurking over at the aprilia site-and yea, i may have seen and heard your bike before you did. was at af1 in new braunfels looking at tuonos and your's was in the back getting prepped for it's trip west. glad it made it to you in one piece.
mechanic was just coming in from test ride when i left. gotta tell ya guys, this thing sounds awesome. menacing, without the baffles in. i'm really giving this one serious consideration and was waiting to see what the tuono factory would look like and if they'd done it up in all black/titanium like the stock model, but with a black frame/black wheels, they'd already have my money. but i just don't like the aesthetics of new factory model as seen on raptors/rockets. too busy. too many color schemes not properly tied together.
hey allan-af1 is in new braunfels, not too far from corpus and without question, one of the best dealerships i've ever set foot in. they get it. my only hesitation , and i'm trying to approach this logically-why i don't know-is the seeming absence of full support from aprilia for parts, extras, etc in the u.s. lots of performance related gear, but you can't even buy a higher windscreen from aprilia yet. it'll come, just slow and if like my fz1, would enter the mod process quickly upon receipt. kinda impatient in that regard.
all said, not the most practical ride out there, but it is the dark side, calling your name.

Great machine; almost bought one, until the KTM dealer gave me a deal I couldn't refuse. As they say in Brooklyn, Supoib!

Gosharootie, that's some fine motorcycle. I sat one at Laguna and liked it. Allan kept whispering "You know you want it", over and over.

Here's a link to some suspension settings for you to fool around with:

BMWK1200RS,

I haven't made it to Palomar and I doubt that I will now. I'm moving to Bakersfield at the end of September 06. But I did take my new baby up Mt. Baldy yesterday for a quickie run after work. The stupid sunset was in my eyes not to mention unfamiliarity with the vehicle made me very cautious and I went a lot slower than I usually did. But the quick twisty trip told me plenty though.

The bumps that used to upset the old Tuono now is but a minor nuissance. I feel more confident in apexing later (not a problem before with the bike, but with me). The radially mounted calipers ARE super nice in the twisties, not wanting to right the bike as much when you lean over.

This bike really deserves to go on the track and let it all hang out. Riding the twisties is effortless, at least riding the twisties at a reasonable and safe 70% rate that is. Hopefully next year I won't have to be on stand-by status and I'll be hitting Buttonwillow Raceway in the weekends.

I'm up to 350-miles now.:eusa_clap: She should be well broken in by tomorrow night.:028: :webers:

Typical Italian. Somehow, somewhere, some idiot had screwed up a good deal. One of the beautiful things about an unfaired bike is the ability to do minor fluid top-off without hassle. And that's exactly how my 1st gen Tuono was. So, some idiot designer decided to put two small strips of fairings onto this one in order to oviate the ability to reach the coolant reservoir refill cap and the oil cap. See the lion's head little fairing/air channeler dealie in the below photo for what I mean. That one covers the oil cap. Fine, I can take it off and leave it off, no problem. THE PROBLEM is that on the other side, the fairing strip is also part of the radiator cover. ARGH!!!!! Otherwise, she rides beautifully. I got about 1/4" of chick strips left and that's just fine by me. Attempts at scratching out the last of the chicken strips left my poor Rockster with permanent scars.

The bike looks great and I'm sure it is a legal high to ride. I do have one question: If the last picture is of the bike at 350 miles, why are you needing to remove the rear wheel and fiddle with fluid levels? Just curious.

Now if you need someone to take your old machines and give them an excellent home, keep me in mind.

I'm not talking about removing the rear wheel, or needing to add any fluids. I was just going through the motion of checking out the bike and its various nooks and cranies. That's when I found out that I gotta unbolt the unnecessary fairing strips/plastic strips in order to refill the oil and the coolant.

I don't know anything about water cooled bikes..but..I would have thought that you should never need to top up the coolant..well hardly ever anyway.

Sorry,:icon_redface: when I saw the picture of your machine with the rear wheel off I naturally assumed you needed to remove it.

Nice looking machine in any case.

DJ - I think it would look good on you as well.

At first I loved the look of the new "Factory" (arent' they all made by the factory? :) ) but the more I look at that lion, the more I don't like it. Without teeth he looks to be about 98 years old: "Uhhhh, watch out for that bad ol' lion, he'll gum ya' to death!":webers:

I personally think that Aprilia had somehow inherited Japanese motorcycle designers because their bikes have ghastly graphics. Shapes are fine, but the colors are not just garish alone but also tres gauche.

It'd have a bounty on its chassis if it didn't ride so good.

I'm a huge Tuono fan. I would say don't ride one unless you're prepared to buy another bike. They're like motorcycle crack. I swapped bikes for a while with a buddy who has a well set-up '03 with Penskes and exhaust. What a hoot! I've been giving serious consideration to the '07s, but will probably put all my eggs in the R1200S basket. Saw the matte-black version a few days ago at Scuderia in SF. Tried to get the cutie salesgirl to sit on it for a picture, but she was too shy.
