Hi All -
Just a quick note.
Flew in to Phoenix last night and am packing up my house today. Tomorrow, my "posse" leaves by road for Great Falls, Virginia, in a two-car caravan. Delia and I will be in the U-haul van with a few of our things, and daughter Zarina, Aron - the college-age son of my business partner, and our little dog Pearl will follow in Delia's PT Cruiser. We will be connected by FRS radio. The big moving van with all our stuff will also be along the road somewhere!
Staying in KOA's- Tucumcari, NM the first day, Lebanon, PA the second day, Richmond, Indiana, the third day. Hope to have a lot of pictures and a nice story for you all. Going off the net now - have to unplug the router for the movers!
Talk to you later on from down the road!
Good Luck and a safe journey.
Oh Bob why are you going to Pa. before Ind.?

...Lebanon, PA, then Indiana, then Virginia? Did your GPS screw up? That is an interesting route, for sure.
Good travels. Stay away from red wine and shrimp. Post pics.

Bob, you don't need a deer whistle thingy....you need a 30.06, and a really sharp knife to skin it out. Not to mention a nice bar-b-q and beer.
Glad you made it safe.
Roger

Okay, so I finally get to catch my breath and tell the story.
It was last Friday, August 18. I had flown in to Phoenix from DC the night before, along with Aron, the 19 year old son of my friend and business partner, Keith. I have known Aron since he was a little whippersnapper years ago when his Dad and I were both assigned to the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
Our plan, pack a 12 foot truck with some stuff, Delia and I would drive the truck, followed by Aron and out 19 y/o girl-child, Zarina, and our little dog Pearl. So Friday morning, here we are:

A little while later the movers arrived with a real truck. Great crew out of Kentucky - father and son and this was their beautiful rig:

It quickly became clear that we had too much stuff for the 12 foot truck, so I traded it in for a 16-foot 3 1/2 ton truck, which we filled every inch of:

One of our first stops was Albuquerque. It had started to rain on I-40, and I lost a wiper blade, so we stopped at K-Mart to get a new one. Delia and Aron and Pearl stretched all 8 of their legs:

A little ways up the road, Pearl got to stretch her legs while we got gas in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, next to the Pecos river:

We finally arrived at our destination for the day, Tucumcari, New Mexico, up on the border of the Texas panhandle. We had a beautiful little cabin looking out on a big field full of unbroken horses which kept running back and forth:

We tucked in to our little cabin and slept off the first 750 miles of our Journey. Sunday morning brought lots of raun, which followed a typically stormy night in New Mexico. More to follow:

The rest of the trip was nice but not too interesting, Here are the photos:
After spending the night in New Mexico, we got on to I-40 and it poured rain all the way across the Texas panhandle. Man, I was glad I was not on the bike! Our destination for the day was the KOA campground in Lebanon, in the middle of Missouri.
We streaked across Oklahoma on the slab. This second day was the longest, about 750 miles, so we didn't dally much - but here is proof we were actually in Oklahoma:

And eventally into Missouri:

And finally to our little "Kabin" on a duck pond in Lebanon, Missouri:

Two of the three girls were happy to have their pictures taken:

Aron was a loner - he pitched his tent near the Kabin, with Z's help:

Delia enjoyed the swimming pool:

So we had an uneventful night, and then drove the next day, right through Saint Louis to Richmond, Indiana, We met up with my younget son Pete there, who was getting settled in to his second year of college. Here he is, with some groovy girl calling to find out why he isn't at the dorm:

We spent some time around campus before headed out to a big dinner:

And so we spent the nice at probably the nicest KOA of our tripp, in Richmond, Indiana - it was protected from the Interstate noise and had a great pond in front of our Kabin:

The last day we streaked across Pennsylvania and Maryland to our new home in Great Falls, Virginia. We are very luck, on two acres, a former chicken and cow farm in a rural area only 10 miles from my office and 15 miles from the beltway. Next year, anybody riding through the area has a place to pitch a tent!
