On longer rides I often wear bicycle shorts under my riding gear. I recently discovered an underwear alternative more suited for hot weather -- padded cycling underwear available at REI: http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?storeId=8000&crumb=Original+Search%5E%26link%3D1%26query%3D*%26 cat%3D4500124%7ECycling+Underwear%5E%26cat%3D49276 92&link=1&query=*&cat=4927692&text=1&vcat=REI_SSHP_CYCLING_TOC:N

These things are great -- very light weight, cool, nicely padded and quick drying. I test rode the white padded boxers last Saturday in 112 degree heat and found them quite comfortable. My crotch stayed cool and dry. Air circulation and wicking in the crotch area is excellent. My post-ride wash and hang-dry experiment produced dry boxers including pad in just a few hours.

For those so inclined REI offers padded briefs which I have a hard time imagining. YMMV.

Don, I always wear cycling shorts under my gear on long rides. I checked these out and ordered a pair of boxers. Thanks for the info.

OK Don...all new Cafe' members get only 1 crotch report and you've had yours!
Thank God you didn't heed our usual admonition of "Pics! We need pics!"

These do look interesting...always looking for more/better hot weather gear, living in the Summer Sweat Box called North Texas!

Now here is an idea that has been rolling around my head today. What about using DEPENDS as disposable padded riding shorts? When you go on a trip, you wear them during the day for the extra padding, sweat absorption, back up in case you can't find a potty, or if you have the "oh boy, that last meal isn't agreeing with me....." moment. At the end of the day you chuck them, and use a new pair the next day. Going on a one week trip? Get a six pack. Now we have to think up a pithy name for marketing.

Bones,

Why don't you just lie down and put a cold towel on your forehead until these thoughts pass. If that doesn't work, you could try Xanax.

Would you like a recommendation for a good patent attorney?
BTW, the REI padded cycling underwear is offered in gender specific models.

A word to the wise. If you do put a sock in your pants, I learned the hard way that you should wear the sock in teh front.

In Texas we use large Idaho potatoes...they go in the front?

Having seen reports of persons using padded cycling shorts, I went out and bought some. Took them straight back.

The padding is fine if you are sitting on a narrow bicycle saddle. On a wide motor cycle saddle - where one sits differently, it felt like it could cause some serious discomfort later in a ride.

One tip I will not pass on.

fall short for sport riding in my experience. I have discovered, however, at USGP, a motorcycle specific riding short made by WWW.planet-knox.com
that is the complete item, replete with coccyx protection and excellent padding. This was the most innovative vendor at Laguna Seca in 2006. The items are British made. The importance of protecting one's spine is ALMOST ALWAYS overlooked by we as riders. I was as well until a close pal took a blind corner last year on a local foray with friends. One of these had fallen in the road around that corner and Dickie hit him with his 200 mile old Multistrada. Dickie broke is tail bone (coccyx) and damaged the nerves that operate his bladder and bowel. He had a year recovery period, and took it all in stride as he is wont to do, but the pain was seen plainly in the corners of his eyes by his pals. He's now healed, miraculously (so stated another pal, a celebrated orthopedic surgeon who rides with us), and is able to operate again on his own without the little blue pill or a diaper. But he now wears a serious back protector. Most back protector pads that are included with most riding gear fall way short for protecting the spine, so "caveat emptor". If it's bloody hot where you ride and you've been lucky so far, remember you never know what's right around the corner (assuming there are corners where you ride - here there are nothing but).

Knox-brand protection comes standard in both Dainese gear & Belstaff gear, two top names in MC clothing/protection.
The trick with bicycle shorts (to avoid diaper butt) is to get the proper size - you want them tight (lycra stretches), and you can use a lubricant or monkey butt powder (the real name) to make thos 10hr rides a little more compliant.
Just like everything else, there is good, and there is crap. Get Pearl Izumi, Assos, Castelli - store-brand are usually not going to be worth the $ savings.
I don't recommend the bibshorts (unless you're riding a bicycle), because getting out of them is a little tricky on a pit stop....

Hmmm...once I wore a Victoria's Secret bra while visiting Dad. He noticed and immediately and claimed false (or falsie) advertising. I feel the same about men in bike shorts - false advertising.

On the otherhand, it would be nice if BMW finally introduced the push-up jacket...for those of us who could use a little lift.

I like Michelle's point of view - potatoes as false advertising!

Now I recall a comment on this board about men playing Cricket in pyjamas! In my country of origin we not only played cricket, but also rugby. And we did not run around playing these sports (unlike several US sports) in little 'tights' like dancers do their stuff in! That was just too....g..!

Exactly! Right, under your pants where the nad pads overemphasize how happy you are to see me!

We may say we don't but we do look, you know.
