View Full Version : How we spent our summer vacation...

...in beautiful Washington State & Seattle!
Part 1.
This was one of our best vacations ever and this is sure to be too long & boring, but here goes.
We flew into Seattle and got off to a poor start...briefly. It was drizzling and we didn't get to ride in the 30's-something Waco biplane as planned.
Then I realized I had a rental car instead of a motorcycle for 6 days, DOH! Last time I'll trust Betty to make the arrangements.
I'll start with 3 pics that just represent Washington...more on them later.

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994210-L.jpg
From Seattle we drove around & up the Olympic peninsula to the small coast town of Port Townsend and stayed in the Manresa Castle, an old 1860's home with additions by Jesuit priests, later converted to a hotel. Cool...and it has a 4-star restaurant!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994135-L.jpg
In Port Townsend…cool!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994134-L.jpg
Next morning in *perfect* weather, we drove to Bainbridge Island and took a $15.00 ferry ride:104: to Seattle. Olympic Mountains in the background.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81982978-L.jpg
Note Space Needle (Duh!)
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81982980-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81982979-L.jpg
We thought about getting on this ship and going on to Alaska!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81982981-L.jpg
The next pics were taken atop the "Space Needle", the only really "touristy" thing we did...it was worth fighting the crowd!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81983000-L.jpg
On a clear day you can see snow & glacier covered, volcanic Mount Rainer, some 80 miles to the Southeast (Ron, correct if I screw up any of these details!)
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994150-L.jpg
From the observation deck you can also see the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994148-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994155-L.jpg
And, (if my geography is correct) Ron Kline's employer, the University of Washington, and his neighborhood...in the green, wooded area, far right.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994146-L.jpg
Here we are in a reflection self-photo from the glass of the observation deck. Man, am I clever?! Actually I saw a Chinese guy doing it and thought "What the hell?"
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994145-L.jpg
Next stop, the rotating restaurant atop the Space Needle.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81983002-L.jpg
A pensive Betty...
(Actually trying to plan how to dump me and take of with that Chinese dude.)
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994152-L.jpg
A Peckerhead having an appetizer.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994154-L.jpg
My first "DJ" shot...there will be others! Coconut prawns and a nice amber ale...hmmm. And note the use of extra virgin olive oil instead of nasty old butter on my bread. I am closely watching my girlish-figure, even on vacation!
(Does anyone really know what an "extra virgin" is? I think I may have dated a few back in Amarillo.)
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994159-L.jpg
After the Space Noodle we took a walk and saw some neat flowers in a park.
(Sorry for the "headlights on bright" in the first pic...don't look Bob!)
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81983003-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81983005-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81983007-O.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994167-O.jpg
I wanted all those flower shots in there so everyone would know what a sensitive guy I am...
On to Chandler's Crabhouse in Seattle and dinner with the Arkline Clan. Copper River Salmon, Filet Mignon, a great wine I forgot, good conversation and new friends...the perfect evening!
The DJ shot first...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994179-L.jpg
Donna and our own Ron Kline...yes, they are just as much fun as they look!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994175-L.jpg
Donna is a senior RN at the VA Hospital; Ron is an IT Director at the University of Washington...and both motorcycle riders. Sorry about this pic, it's a better pose but I didn't use fill-flash and had to Photo Shop it to death so you could see 'em!
In Ron's spare time, he is Napoleon.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994173-L.jpg
Alex (Alexandra) and main squeeze Nick. Another couple of characters and a lot of fun. Nineteen, in love (I think!), and it all lies ahead...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994169-L.jpg
Dave & Betty...the Chinese dude dumped her before dinner.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994176-L.jpg
In all seriousness for a moment, this evening was definitely the highlight of the trip. Our vacation was timed to approximately coincide with Betty's birthday and our 40th anniversary. This day was also Ron & Donna's 24th anniversary. What a happy coincidence! Then to get to put another face with a Motorcyclist's name was great. But to have this much fun and make 4 new friends was really special.
Thank you Ron & Donna.
End of Part 1. Part 2. to be posted as soon as I can get my eyes to un-cross and focus!

Part 2.
After we bid adieu to the Kline Clan, we shacked up in a downtown hotel and next morning made a stop on the way out of town at the famous Pike Street Market.
On the way I snapped this, 'cause it just "looks like" Seattle (now one of my favorite cities!).
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994180-L.jpg
Pike Street Market.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994187-L.jpg
If they don't have it here...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994181-L.jpg
This is the famous "flying fish" market. Man, those suckers are sailing right & left!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994182-L.jpg
They got crabs...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994184-L.jpg
What the f...?
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994183-L.jpg
Betty tried to run off with the balloon dude too...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994185-L.jpg
I just fell in love with this old bike...and I don't even like Hondas!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994190-L.jpg
On the way to see Mount Rainier we went for a train ride pulled by this old oil-burner steam engine. Kinda fun.

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994204-L.jpg

The engineer brought her back...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994197-L.jpg
Meanwhile, in the train station parking lot...a way cool '47 Ford hotrod!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994192-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994191-L.jpg
And this odd trio...
A Ural side-hack and a Ural...um...touring chopper?
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994206-L.jpg
Accompanied by a nice old toaster-tank Beemer /5.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994208-L.jpg
A great little waterfall and place to stop for lunch.

My lunch...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994246-L.jpg
Betty's lunch. Sorry Deej. At least she didn't take off with the sandwich guy.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994247-L.jpg
Now it's really gettin' cool!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994209-L.jpg
The locals call this mountain "Mount Rainier".
But after driving around him all day, I renamed him "Mount Who's Your Daddy?!"
Snow and ice covered all year, glaciers crawling around, a big volcano that last popped about 1400 years ago. Is it due again?
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994211-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994221-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994195-L.jpg
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994222-L.jpg
Then around to Tacoma, a neat town, smaller, laid back, not as fast paced & glitzie as Seattle..."charming" I guess you'd say. We stayed here at the Geiger Victorian B&B, a great 1890's restored Victorian that I think is haunted!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994237-L.jpg
Dinner on the deck of a very good little seafood place...good cold brewskies too!
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994225-L.jpg
Lazy Geese moochin' a meal...

The B&B owners, Jane & Skip, and Betty. Skip is about to make his move...
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994230-L.jpg
Skip's really nice 1940 Ford 4-door DeLuxe Sedan.

I had to punch Skip in his moustache, but I got her back.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/81994231-L.jpg
Breakfast next morning was great Deej...Cranberry/Orange pancakes, bacon, OJ and coffee!

End of Part 2. Part 3 and last coming up...YAHOO-O-OO!

Oh - and try and make sure you dip those hi-beams in the future :037:

Damn, Kurt (OKRider), where'd you come from all of a sudden?
Glad to see you here and hope you post often...also hope you get on down here to N. Texas some time and go riding, or drink beer, or eat BBQ, or hang out, or chase some Texas girls, or something!
We have a lot of pilots in our Friday night Peckerhead "meeting"...mostly commercial now, mostly ex-military, USAF fighter jocks, tail hook boys, 'Nam flyers, whatever. You'd fit right in and will always have a place to stay here in Keller (aka Hooterville) for the night or weekend.
Try to work it out. Really. Send me a PM.
Bob - Yeah, the high beams will be dipped in the future...sorry if it hurt your eyes.
Betty hasn't seen this thread yet...she's gonna kill me!

Well, Dave, it may seem all of a sudden to you. But truth be told, I'm a world-class lurker :icon_redface: and almost feel like I know all you "regulars" personally, which must sound completely strange given that you know nothing about me.
I posted occasionally back when many of the founding members of this site used to regularly reside at a certain BMW forum. I started lurking there around the end of '03 when I was stationed in Germany (USAF) and had my 2004 R1150R on order.
Fact is, I'm somewhat in awe of you veteran riders/wrenchers/hoons and have felt a bit "unworthy" (for lack of a better term) posting, given my relative novice status when it comes to motorcycles -- in that arena I still have far more to learn than to teach.
It's right at 200 miles from here in Altus, OK to Fort Worth, and I guess slightly closer to Keller. I wouldn't mind showing up some time and getting schooled on how to properly ride motorcycles by someone of your stature. BBQ, hanging out all sounds good, but I don't think my wife of 21 years wouldn't approve of the activity with Texas girls you mentioned.
PM coming your way soon.
DarthRider
07-17-2006, 12:17 AM
Yeah, never mind about those Texas girls...I'd rather keep them to myself any way. Yeah, right!
But do keep an overnight trip to Hooterville in mind...we'd be glad to have you and I think could "entertain" you a bit. Betty & I have a nice guest room that has been used by Cafe Bros...that's what it's for.
Don't worry about that experience level at all...us old farts do NOT know it all! Plus, I'm finding that the older and more experienced I get, the more I'm interested in sharing what I've learned with the younger dudes.
So...come on down...!
Wow, fantastic Dave. Although I've been in Cal over 23 years, have never gone it up that way. With these pics... I gotta get up there some time soon. Thanks for posting.

Dave,
You've really captured the essence of my stomping grounds! Very well done, though somewhere I had read there were 260 pictures...Thank god you didn't drive into Eastern Washington! You might have had 500.
That funny looking lake is Ross Lake and at one end of it there's a dam that supplies most of the electricity for Seattle. At other times of the year it is bluer since it isn't carrying such a heavy load of silt after the big melt and run-off times in spring and summer.
I am so glad that you and Betty had such a good time. It was our complete pleasure to meet you both. I hope we can meet up again in real time real soon.

Dave,
Very nice job of DeeJaying your trip. I know what a pain it can be to do all the work to make a post like this happen; and I know we all appreciate it. Now that you've done the Northwest, you have to balance your life out with a trip to the Southeast. No sooner than October and no later that May. And don't worry that you spent all your travel money out there... we'll eat in a lot. Did I mention that I have friends with boats... commercial and recreational. Blue crabs and beer. Mmmmmmm....

Dave, your beautiful country never ceases to amaze me. We seldom get mountains with sharp points here in Oz.

That was about the slickest encapsulation of one of our nicest rainforest tours here on the Pacific Coast. Were all those days really sunny? Thanks for sharing. Why didn't you take that guy's woman after you punched him in the mustache? Fair's fair; I'd have taken his Ford too. Oh! I'm in the wrong time frame again, sorry. Dean told me you were some real scary dude who'd as soon pistol whip an unseemly interloper as wipe cow flop off your tourista's designer sandals. But you look pretty normal, all things considered, and Betty's proof that you must be so.
I like people who photograph their food, as long as it's before they eat it. Good job, Bro. Real nice pics. That monkfish reminds me of my first wife's brother.

Hey guys, thanks for the kind comments...that's the "icing on the cake" for a very good vacation. We've taken a number of vacations like this - fly to someplace we've never been, rent a car and see all the cool places we can find. Then go back another time, re-visit the best-of-the-best and spend a lot less time in the car. After retirement next year, much of that will be with our camp trailer, with a bike on the front platform.
http://r1150r.smugmug.com/photos/83389272-L.jpg
This will never replace a "bike only" trip, but it's a great way to go if your wife & dog want to go and you like a cooler full of beer, a hot cooked meal, a nice bed at the end of the day with someone warm in it, all that.
Anyway...comments I didn't answer in the thread:
Abhijeet - To "DJ" a trip report is high praise.
Si - I hope you can & do come over here. I think you will find no shortage of places to stay, great things to see & do, and "Indian Guides" from the Cafe'!
Well, DJ - I'm happy you "liked what you saw". I think we have all learned from the Master of Trip Posting! Thanks for the compliment on Betty...she is the only reason I have done anything worthwhile with my life, the mother of our fine son, and the one who lets me get away with way too much.
Dean-O - Yeah, didn't that one pic just make you want to spoon some knobbies on the KLR and head for the mountains for weeks on end?! And yes, I certainly agree our little Cafe' has matured into something very special.
Ron - I'm pleased you are pleased with the report on your beautiful stomping grounds. We were very impressed with where you stomp! There are 260 pics but I spared you many of them. Plus my eyeballs were about to explode from processing the pics for the "DJ" and I didn't want to "loose my audience".
"Eastern Washington"? We'll save that for when we come and stay in your new house for 6 months!
George - Yeah, a minor pain but a labor of love too. This is the first time I've ever done anything worth a damn with pics & trip comments after a vacation. I have you birds to thank for that!
And yes...be warned: The coastal Southeast IS on my & Betty's radar.
"...friends with boats... commercial and recreational. Blue crabs and beer. Mmmmmmm...." That's what I'm talkin' about!
And yes, Mr. John Quincy Fleming, we do have mountains with sharp points on them...you should see the Grand Tetons, too. "Grand Tetons" was the name some early French explorer gave them. He'd been out a while I guess, and they reminded him of "Big Tits"! I hope you can come to our country some day, and I hope to come to yours.
Thanks Wild Will, I enjoyed doing the "DJ" and look forward with great anticipation to doing one on your neck o' the woods, too. Don't let looks deceive you, I AM a big, scary dood and I WILL pistol whip anyone I catch interloping. Except I don't have a pistol...but I'm saving up for one. I did get a Daisy Red Rider, Lever Action, Range Model BB gun for my birthday and a big box of BB's! Really. Does that count?
Man, your first wife must've had a really ugly brother, that Monk Fish was the ugliest thing I have EVER seen! We don't have nuthin' like that in these parts...

Hullo Dave,
That's a very swish lookin rig you got there... Never thought to put the bike between the van and the car but it makes sense.
Let me tell you... You and your family are welcome here anytime as our honoured guests. I think you'll love the different sights and sensations we can offer and I just know that our strange ways will tickle your fancy and you'll have a good time.
Bye the way, your trip report made me feel that we were there with you and after your description of The Grand Tetons I don't think I'll be able to look at mountains in quite the same way ever again.
Take care
Cheers,
JQ

John Quincy, I would love to visit your beautiful country...I suspect in some past life I may have been a Kiwi or an Aussie...you guys have a lot in common with Texans!

You told me you'd been a Brit in a past life. Now I feel so cheap!

and then they sent us here to Van Diemans Land 'cause we were real bad. So Si, you see, we are just one big family after all.
Er... better not leave any loaves of bread unguarded around us though..

Holy cow. What a vacation THAT is the way to do it. Thanks for a great post. I really enjoyed the photos and how the post was laid out too.
Did you call ahead to arrange the great weather?
While world travel has its fine features, it is quite clear that there are a lot of places in the US to explore and enjoy.
Your idea of the camp trailer with bike in front and comfortable towing rig is great, especially if you want to take your time going to see new places and exploring from a new "hub" once you get there.
Thanks again for the post. That is a lot of work. Really enjoyed it.
Let me know when you guys want to explore the Northeast. Use our place as a hub.

Great photos-- looks like great fun.
Are you sure you don't work for the Chamber of Commerce? Everybody will now be wanting to visit the Northwest.

Yeah, the Starcraft camper with standard platform for bikes or ATV's is a good way to go, we've really enjoyed it.
As for "hub'ing" at your place for a NE tour...careful what you wish for! We have that tour planned but not scheduled, sometime in the next few years.
Ditto a SE tour...Danger Geechie George! Danger!
Glad you liked the pics Steve. No affiliation with the Washington State CofC but that has just got to be the easiest job in the world.
Bro Ron gets to live there all the time so give him a ration every chance you get, just to even things out a bit!

Dave,
You can park that rig in my yard any time. I can run power out the (above ground) basement window and you can use the downstairs bathroom any time of the day or night.
Not to self: Get a hasp and lock for the beer fridge.

You got it Bonester!
After I get this retirement done, and the new house done, and the move done, I plan to hit the road hard & often.
Betty & I have often talked of a Northeast/New England trip...can't wait!
Let's see...so far I've promised to visit Dean-O in AZ, Wild Will in N. Cali, Ron (again) in Washington, George in NC and Jeff in NY. Oh, and my "other brother from another mother" Fabrizio in Milan.
And a 3-flags DS ride with Dean-O & Collyer, and a Transcon DS with Road Dog, and a Copper Canyon, MX DS ride with another bud, and OZ, and New Zealand, and...and...
Damn, I'm going to have to live 'til I'm as old as Lear to get all that done!
One thing about it though, this Cafe' network we're building can sure enable all that.
Life is so sweet...:041: :045:

Darth,
Sounds like you will be busy enough in retirement to start wondering how you ever had time to work!
I will PM you my home info. so you can keep it in your file of "things to do." Just ring me up or email me when you think you want to come to the Northeast.

To paraphrase, "You can assume we will be there at some point without fear of fucking up!"
Thanks,
