I'm in the market for some bar risers/bar backs for an 1150R. I'm looking for some that:

a) don't require massive rearrangement of cables, wires, hydraulic lines.
b) don't cost much more than an arm, the leg has gone to higher gas prices
c) don't look like cheesy crap

If you've got advice or recommendations, please weigh in.

Shop around and go here last:

I ran Moto-Techniques for a year and a half before I came here. They are a small division of a large CNC machine shop in Fort Worth. The design & engineering, machining, finish, stainless fasteners, pricing and customer service are the best you're likely to find.

Their risers for the 50R are 1" rise and either a 1 1/4" or 5/8" set-back. I'd recommend as little total rise/pullback as you can be comfortable with. Too much and you may find yourself gripping the bars too tight at speed just to hang-on in the wind. This is related to the screen you have, if any, of course.

Talk to Trisha and I bet she'll let you try whichever type you think is right, then trade if you need to for the cost of shipping.

The finish on these is tits! After machining, the risers are "vibratory-deburred" then clear industrial anodized. The match to the silver/gray BMW triple clamp finish is virtually identical.

If your missing leg ever shows up, spring for their Cam Cap Covers and oil filler replacement...the only one on the market that is both tamper-resistant *and* actually fixes the problem that causes the common oil leaks/weeping at both places.

Their replacement billet Paralever Torque Arm replacement is stronger & lighter than stock, although it doesn't need to be...but they also look really cool!

Dave,

Do the Moto-Techniques bar backs diminish or eliminate the harmonic vibration on the R1150R?

Jay, I can't say for sure because I've never used bar-backs but I doubt it.
It's still a solid mount, metal-to-metal joint, but then I suppose the added mass could help somewhat.
How's that for a vague answer?!

Ark,
I agree. I can email you pics of the ones I had on my R. Very nice fit and finish and easy to install with no re routing.

Ron, Jay, for sure go with the Moto Tech:023: .

One way to help with the vibration is to go with the HEAVY Throttlemeister set up, Kinda expensive at 128 bucks I think, been awhile...I had the Heavy ones on my R and it made a big difference, or you could fill up the handlebar with BB's or lead shot, but to be honest I don't know how that would work with the heated grips.
I think over at ADV rider a couple of guys did it to 1150GS's. There used to be a product called a bar snake, but I don't have any experience with it nor do I know anybody that does. Dave???? You out there?

Dear HPHIC (AKA Ron Kline) -

I had problems with numbness in my hands on the RR after about 15-20 minutes - the bike pitched me forward a bit and I could not keep excessive pressure off my palms. The solution for me were the very finely made and well-machined "Gen-Mar" bar-backs. These devices looked very good once they were mounted, did not cost an arm and a leg, and took care of the ergonomic issues which were plaguing me on the bike. Definitely check them out:
