There was a shot of Rossi, standing in the run-off, shoulders slumped, head looking down, arms down. The man looked absolutely dejected. And who wouldn't have been. After all the fine paring of positions, the one time golden man of motogp was a DNF having gained almost three seconds in front of Pedrosa and with something like seven laps to go. Given the level of riding these guys are at 3 seconds is an infinite amount of time to make up. The Yamaha just quit on him and he slowly rode it off the track.

There was a shot of Hopkins, who had lead for a long time, now back a bit leaned over farther and farther. Just an imperceptible wiggle and the front wheel washed and he was sliding to the outside of the curve.

There was a mechanical Pedrosa, riding like there couldn't possibly be another day at the races, like a man on THE MISSION, and poof...Melandri is past him and then Capirossi. At the end, these were the three on the podium

There it was. The French Grand Prix and the contention was fierce for the first two thirds of the game. And it really does look like a Honda season, but for the odd Ducati and Yamaha at the front. Hayden was riding with the flu, 'tis said. He obviously wasn't on form.

I can't imagine these races getting much better. So different from last season when there was an almost forgone conclusion that what's his name would win. There have now been six different riders on the podium, with Melandri and Hayden taking up much of the space on multiple occasions. The spread between Hayden and the next three is only 10 points. And Valentino has less than half the points that Hayden has. Edwards and Stoner have more points than last season's champion. One new and one not so new.

Amazing stuff. Truly.
