CORONA - Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone and his wife were injured in a traffic accident Saturday that backed up traffic on Highway 91 and Interstate 15.

Both suffered minor to moderate injuries, said Ray Smith, county spokesman.

The accident occurred when the couple was headed down Highway 91 to their 18-year-old son's swim meet finals in Long Beach on Stone's 2003 Harley Davidson 50th Anniversary Electra Glide Ultra Classic.

As traffic slowed abruptly in front of him, Stone stopped short, causing the motorcycle to crash about 11:20 a.m. at Serfas Club Drive/Auto Center Drive, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Two off-duty paramedics from Orange County who were near the accident scene treated the couple until Corona firefighters arrived, Battalion Chief Ted Yancu said.

An ambulance took Jeff Stone to Riverside Community Hospital. He was treated for a broken collarbone and broken foot and was released Saturday evening, said Vern Lauritzen, Stone's chief of staff.

A helicopter took Regina Stone to Riverside County Regional Medical Center. She was diagnosed with a mild concussion and was being held overnight for observation.

All lanes of Highway 91 were closed for a short time to allow the helicopter to land.

Stone was elected to represent the 3rd District in 2004 after serving as a Temecula city councilman. The 3rd District ranges from Idyllwild and Hemet to Canyon Lake and Murrieta.

On Saturday afternoon, his former council members called Stone, and two fellow supervisors visited him in the hospital.

"We're OK and I cannot say enough to thank everyone who has called to express their support and concern," Stone said in a statement released Saturday.

Probably he got spooked by the cars in front of him, and it was the very first time in his whole H-D-ridin' life he grabbed some front brake... :037:

Cheers!

ps - I'm sure ABS would have saved him... :eusa_whistle: :064: :eusa_whistle:

The article implies that he was able to "stop short" on an 800 pound bike with two riders. Don't know if he just locked them up and fell over or what.
I drove that section of "freeway" for years. Traffic can be flowing 60 to 70 MPH but if you look in your mirrors and back the entire freeway can come to a stop. And if you leave more than a few car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you, someone is sure to cut in there. Just gotta keep on your toes. :eusa_boohoo:

Boy - that's the way all of SOCAL is these days. Still, one has to be prepared for what's in front of them.

Maybe he locked the rear. Now this isn,t a HD bash, but it seems as if everytime I hear from someone to NOT use the front brake, they are astride an HD. I always give them " I thought I told you not to smoke that shit look" and proceed to give them a lesson in braking.
I know its the new or returning to riding riders that hear that and buy into it. Then promptly go out and hit something they could have easily avoided.
I witnessed that very seniorio 2 years ago on the 101 when a guy on a HD, wearing 2 grand of leather and a DOT approved bandanna locked the rear on a panic stop, lost it, low-sided and suffered a fatal head injury.
I was the first to him, and it was ugly. I then had to strap on my helmet and ride on. Made a deep impression on me.

I was driving on the 91 West, stuck in miserable traffic jam, watching my moto brethens splitting lane by with envy. I saw a Harley guy driving up through the lanes as well but I couldn't quite figure out what he was doing.

There were plenty of room for lane splitting, but he was acting like a monkey on a branch. He was wigglign the handlebar back and forth and repeatedly stabbing the rear brake and shifting his body from side to side. I don't know what the hell he was doing, but he was doing something. I've ridden cruisers before and while they were very awkward to handle at low speeds, I don't remember doing anything like this dude was doing.

HD's brakes may be getting better, the rider hasn't improved. But then, we could say that about most brands.
