I haven't verified this but I did get it from a trusted source, a veteran MSF Instructor in upstate NY.
HJC is typically a good helmet, a direct Korean competitor with the equally good KBC's we sell.

Damn, I wish they would recall my flip up HJC. It fell off the bike seat a couple of weeks ago and the chin bar pops off and goes sliding across the pavement. Come to find out the metal bracket on the chin shield relys plastic ratchet mechanism to hold it together.:104:
I going back to my full face Shoei.

I hope all our buds here read about that chin bar.

As I have posted elsewhere, HJC flip up or "modular" helmets are ones I have seen fail at the chin bar area, resulting in facial injuries. The latches on the HJC's I have seen are not anything I would rely on.

Nag Dab it! I sure wish someone would chime in that the more expensive HJC flip up (there are at least two) has a better latch. I love the fit of mine and the convenience of the flip-up. But I'll be retiring it tonight.....sigh.
No need to wear boots, armored pants and jacket just to have the helmet "convert" to open face on impact....grrr!

For what it's worth, MCN has done two reviews of flip-up, modular helmets since 2001. There are two versions of flip-up from HJC. The Sy-Max and the CL-Max. The CL is listed at about $50.00 cheaper than the Sy-Max. The HJC Sy-Max has scored pretty well in these MCN reviews, but in a real world situation, who knows what the result might be?
I've owned 3/4 helmets, a Bell full-face, never a beanie or do-rag. I've also owned two Schuberths now and am pleased with them. They have a metal to metal latching system and fit my skull very well compared to others. I have no illusions that a modular helmet is as safe as a full face in a face plant situation. But then I have no illusions about the relative dangers of riding a motorcycle in a crowded urban environment.

Well put Ronaldo!
It's all about understanding & acceptance of risk, intelligent compromises and good choices.
