From the flat lands of South Texas to all those mountain men and women out there. How do you navigate stopping on a steep incline that has no flat top?
Do you stop with your hand brake, transfer the braking to your foot brake then proceed forward with the roll of the throttle hand or do you try and do the brake and throttle at the same time?

My steepest incline is at a railroad crossing.

If you're pointing uphill..use the rear brake.

That's pretty much what I do.

It's a delicate dance that drives many cagers around here to buy an automagic transmission with their enclosure.

Stop so that you aren't at an angle across the rise, you don't want to have to lean the bike any more than necessary. Stop, using the front brake, making sure you're in first gear and have the clutch lever hauled all the way back to the bar, while putting your left foot down. (headed uphill on a normally crowned road, you might be surprised at the leg reach needed on the right side). Transfer braking action to your foot pedal (the bike might drop back onto the rear brake a bit here) before letting loose of the front brake. To get rolling again, let out the clutch until you reach the friction point, give a bit of throttle and release the rear brake so that the bike begins to move forward then roll on more throttle. Takes a bit of practice and living in the right city to get it down. San Francisco must the the best place to practice in the US.

And watch those RR crossings...

The Pegster's Forester has a "hill holder clutch". Very cool. I betcha the local Subaru dealer could tell you how it works.

We have no uphills here in Tassie, just downhills.

Just use the rear brake to hold the bike in place.

British before say, um, I think it was '75 required a slightly different drill. All hands, no rear brake to speak of, since the gear shift/rear brake were swapped compared to today's standardized layout. And god help you if you had leading shoe brakes on the front...Hardly any help in keeping from rolling backwards at all. Smell the clutch yet? Thank god the Norton I bought had a front disc, not too good for stopping from speed, but good at holding the bike in place...Who knew you could be so co-ordinated with all that adrenaline coursing through your veins...
