Well,

It's better than equipping a KLR with ABS, and a lot cheaper, too... :icon_wink: :icon_lol: :icon_wink:

Cheers!

My friend Tom paid either $5200 or $5300 out the door at a little dealership in Casa Grande. Since he hasn't ridden much since his motocross racing days, he needs to buy some gear before he starts doing any serious riding. He should be ready to go in a week or two, so you better get to shopping.

Mike -

I saw a really nice FMF slip-on for the KLR the other day.
Also, Big Gun makes a nice full system with aluminum/ceramic inside/outside coating. This is what I'm putting on mine when I get it. It has two sound level baffles and a USDA spark arrester. Big Gun is very big in 4-stroke MX, cross-country & ATV racing.
And there are others too of course...and nothing against Staintune!

Mike, I'm looking at buying a KLR also, I've been looking at the Kaw dealer in Goodyear. How soon you looking to buy? Maybe we get a better deal if we buy 2.
Look on ADVrider, you can get mounts for pelican cases, I'm gonna add that so I can commute on it.

Bob, Tessie needs a little brother to sneer at, I pick up a KLR, you have to come over to the west side, I have some dirt roads out here that are awesome. There's a road up in the White Tank MTS, I can take you to. Goes straight up the mountian. Great view, we used to sneak thru the CAT proving grounds to get to it 30 years ago.

FYI - General consensus in the KLR circles is the only thing you gain by swapping the exhaust system is noise. You loose gas mileage. The stock bike gets around 50 mpg depending on the load. There are no modifications that will improve this. The bike is mildly tuned for reliability and abuse to begin with and there aren't any real hop up parts available on the market. The cooling system on this bike is marginal, any additional heat is problematic.

If you want a hot single to play with consider a Honda or KTM.

Guys, there is a brand new Kaw dealer opening up here. I am doing some consulting for them. I'll check today to see what kind of special deal we can get OTD.

Check these guys out....http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html

On my KLR, I drilled out the exhaust with a 7/8 inch metal cutting hole say, adds a little more base note.

I also have a Wolfman tank bag, the led tail lite kit, plan to get the left hand switch gear with the push to cancel turn signals and a headlite "off" switch. Also have the motocross style foot pegs. Also have the Cee Bailys windshield.

Road Dog has extensive experience with the KLR 650's, I love mine.

All right guys.

We are able to get KLR650 up here for $5200.00 out the door. That includes everything, tax, title, Az. license plate and any other fees that can be thought of. I went thru all the numbers with these guys and it looks like they will be making something like $119.00 per bike. They have a red and a green one, the red has been put together, the green not yet. He will get whatever we want. No hidden charges, nothing, the batterys have not even had acid added yet.

Post here or let me know.

When I get out to San Jose BMW, I will post all the particulars on the extended warrenty program for us, also the Remus deal for us.

Hope we get some response from this as I will then keep working on various deals for the Cafe. Just FYI, I get absolutely no money out of any of this other than the same deals.

Last week I saw the actual dealer's numbers on KLR's and their cost *not* net of hold-back is $4500 and change.

Out the door at $5200 is a good, fair deal. That's about the going rate at several shops I've talked to.

Anytime you get a really good deal on a new bike, please patronize that dealer all you can for parts, accessories and service. He's looking at it as a long term relationship, we should to if we want the good bike prices to continue.

Thanks for the industry perspective Dave. I try to do so, within reason.

Thanks Bob.
I know you know this, but the "Cycle Gears" of the world are good and we need them, but so is the guy stocking parts and maintaining a service dept.
We need 'em all and there are times when I would rather see my dealer make a couple of bucks than for me to save one.

Dave,

$5200 out of the door here in TX?

Where?

Dallara

I might be able to get you that, or at least damn close... within dollars... down here in C.C. if you're interested.

If you're serious, let me know.

That said. I wouldn't buy a new KLR-650. Why?

Because they are all over the place used with next to no miles. Seems like a lot of folks buy 'em 'cuz they're relatively cheap, are dual-purpose, get good mileage, etc.... And they think they're gonn'a ride 'em. Only they don't much after the *honeymoon*, and they end up sitting in a garage.

You remember Randy from the Hill Country ride? Now there's a classic example - squared. Randy thought he wanted to get back into riding, and he decided on a KLR 'cuz he thought he could not only ride it on the road, but to bop around on his little 45 acre place in Refugio. He found it in the paper, 2 years old, and with 600 mile son the odo. He snapped it up, paid $$$$$ to the shop to get the carb cleaned, a new battery, etc. to get it running right again. Now it's 2 years later, the bike has had another battery, another carb cleaning, new tires (from dry rot to the old ones), and a petcock diaphram... and it now has 1,800 miles. I'm waiting on the day he wants to sell it! :037:

I also know of no less than 4 that have sold around here in the past year, and all with less than 1,200 miles on each of them (one with 280 !!! :104: )... And all for $3,600 or less.

Just watch the paper and Cycle Trader... Maybe even e-Bay. They're out there, used but absolutely cherry to the max.

That's my two yen, anyway... YMMV.

Cheers!

Thank you Allen.

In a few months I anticipate making a decision - unless the really good deal comes by.

I have been keeping my eye open, looked at some "as good as new" - until one gets close. Too many are wanting rediculous amounts for theirs that it makes sense to buy new.

I stay away from Ebay - seen some bikes there that really had doctored speedo's and abused. Cycletrader has been bare except for some dealers wanting nearly new prices. One KAWA dealer in particular uses Cycletrader - in Texas City. They have road-kill for sales staff!

If you see anything interesting - particualry a red one - let me know.

Brian -
I seem to have misspoken myself about KLR pricing in Texas. The only dealer I actually spoke with personally offered me one at his true cost (we're old friends).
One of our Sales Mgrs. bought one at ~$5200 from, I believe, D&S Kawasaki in Arlington. If you talk with them please don't mention my name! I'm beginning to suspect this may have been a "buddy deal", but may be a common one after reading Allan's post. That Sales Mgr. now says he's "heard" they can be had for that in other shops but I'm beginning to take what he says with a grain of salt.
Sorry if I inadvertently mislead you.

Interesting thing to note about KLR-650's...

Did any of you happen to know that they are not built in Japan? Nor the United States...

Nope, since around 2003 or 2004 all KLR-650's have been built in Malaysia. Prior to that for a year or so they were assembled in Malaysia, but the major componentry, engines, etc. all got shipped in from Japan. Now, IIRC, the entire bike, including the engine, is built totally in Malaysia.

Apparently the KLR is also just as popular in many a nation in Asia for the same reasons it is here... Cheap to buy and maintain, parts availability and interchangability going back decades, and reliable as a stone. From what my dealer tells me it is Kawasaki's best selling model worldwide, and that's one of the reasons they don't want to change it. He claims Kawasaki is alread in negotiations with mainland China about producing some (or a China-specific version) there.

IIRC, it is also the model Kawasaki has the highest production numbers of any bike they have ever produced.

Here's a trivia question for all of ya'...

Kawasaki was quite fond of using weird, *secret agency* internal developmnt code names back in the 1970's, and two of there most popular models - the KLR-600 (which became the KLR-650) and the Z-1 - both had code names that actually became quite famous...

Can anybody tell me the KLR's internal development code name???

Bonus points if you can tell me the Z-1's code name...

Cheers!

Allan (Dallara - NAABSCD)

ps - Brian, used ones seem to be quite readily available here and in San Antonio, so you might want to check the San Antonio papers. And here's another one for ya'... My local dealer is great, and I wouldn't buy a Kawasaki from anybody else. However, I have another old, old friend who is a Kawasaki dealer just north of San Antonio in Universal City. He is renown for having the lowest Kawasaki prices just about anywhere, and he likes to deal. He is also a big believer in stocking "non-currents" - brand new bikes, but from previous model years - and making truly low deals on them... He even buys non-currents from other dealers.

You will want to try them before you buy anywhere else, just to see. Here's the info:

Kawasaki of Universal City
1737 Pat Booker Road
Universal City, TX 78148-3434
(210) - 659 - 1971

Same guy has owned it since 1969, and you should ask for him. His name is "Gary", and tell him I sent ya'!

(PM me if you want his full name)

Those are interesting guesses, Jamming...

But Kawasaki thought along a different path in those days. sort of like Lockheed having code names for projects like "Tacit Blue" and the like.

Here's a hint...

The original, 1973 Kawasaki 900cc Z-1's code name was "New York Steak"...

Kawasaki had absolutely no idea that the development code name for their big, new water-cooled four-stroke single would also be the name of No. 1 song on the Hit List of USA at around the same time the bike was finally unveiled...

Cheers!
