View Full Version : Posting nudity, etc.

When a thread contains nudity (boobs, etc.) can we place "(NSFW)", or "(NWS)" in the title. This usually has to be done by an admin since the nudity isn't always planned by the thread starter. This is the method used by most of the bigger boards I participate in for guys like me who view these sites while at work and don't want to get fired. Don't get me wrong, I applaud all the hot nudity you guys care to post, it just lets me know that a certain thread shouldn't be viewed while at work (and possibly at home while the wife is in the room :embarassed: )

(NSFW) = Not Safe For Work
(NWS) = Not Work Safe

Thanks

OP -

That seems reasonable to me. There may be a little "to do" on administering it since we really don't have "moderators" per se, which is nice.

Good idea Jason, we may just have to "self-police" this though, with polite reminders when someone forgets...and someone will.
Probably me!
Another option might be to ask everyone to confine the NWS images to one topic section. But that sort of stifles the "free flow" in the other sections.
I don't think there's any easy answer for this one.

I agree. I think confining it to one section would suck. It might be easier if a number of the regulars had "MOD" type privileges and when they see some nudity to alter the title to include "(NWS)". That's generally the way I've seen it done.

And just to reiterate... I like boobies :)

I'm at a loss.....if the computer is not to be used for other than work and you know you will be called on the carpet why risk it, regardless of the material.

Is the boss going to be less lenient if you are looking at motorcycle helmets, or ebay, or playing poker......it's all verbotten....

Yep, I do it too but I dn't venture onto a site that I know will have some questionable material, to some.

Just my 2 cents......

Having retired a while back as Director of Information Security for a fair sized multi national company I can comment on the how we dealt with the issue.

We routinely updated our lists of questionable sites. These included porno, gambling, and variety of other types. We then monitored for usage patterns. An occasional hit to a listed site was of little interest. After all, how often do you end up linking to a site unintentionally? Repeated hits to questionable sites, or hour upon hour of random surfing would win you a visit from a member of our staff.

The issue of having someone looking over your shoulder when a company judged, inapporpriate image is displayed, is another matter. While one can easily claim it was inadvertant, most Human Resources departments are not so understanding. As anyone who has sat through the mind numbing sensativity training so common these days knows, it is not necessary to intend to be offensive. You can be judged guilty if offense is taken.

I dare say that is one of the main reasons some companies take the 'only work related' internet use is approved. Many other companies realize that the time saving aspect of internet usage actually results in productivity gains, since people no longer have to take as much time off to plan their vacations, or go Christmas shopping etc.

Sorry to ramble on so. Since I no longer have to be concerned about the whole issue, I'm going back to check out the latest from Bob and DJ.

Not to be a dick, but I never mentioned I wasn't allowed to surf the net. You assumed that. I can surf the 'net on breaks and at lunch, etc. Just can't view anything that would get HR upset. :)

I work as a contractor for a government agency and while the IT policy states that you can use the internet for personal reasons (I know they monitor were we go, and for how long) they kind of frown upon porn. I know, (mostly) what's on this site would not be considered porn but our CIO occasionally pops up from out of nowhere behind me (I work in a Network Ops center) to see how things are going. No big deal if things are quiet and I'm on ebay, or reading a forum (hey, it could be a techie forum afterall) but to see pictures of naked women, even only boobs, would AT LEAST have me removed from the contract. I'm not sure how my corporate offices would handle it, but I would probably be looking for a job based on their policy.

I know some posts are marked NSFW and I avoid those, but there was one I opened yesterday that was NOT labeled. This thread (http://www.motorcyclistcafe.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361)was the one. My program manager was sitting next to me when this opened, and he spends enough of his own time on ebay, but doesn't tolerate ANY kind of nudity from us. The reason being, we could lose our contract over it. Hey, he's all for naked women, just not on gov't sites as a contractor.

Like I said in another post, I'll have to refrain from visiting this site from work.:icon_cry:

Now, let me go look at that post. heh heh.

Man, John (R4R&R)...

I really am sorry, honestly. I don't want to get anybody into any trouble, and I don't want anyone to have to avoid this site at work.

I promise if I start any more threads that are even slightly questionable I will hang an NSFW tag on 'em.

BTW, I have tried now four times to edit the title of the "For Bob..." post, and though the actual post itself shows the NSFW edit, it won't change the title in the topic section.

What's up with that, Abhijeet?

Thanks, and again, I am truly sorry.

Allan -

Go in to your original post and click in the "edit" button bottom right. That puts you in to a page with a text box you can edit/modify. At the bottom of the text box there is a button that says "go advanced". Hit that button, then modify the title inthe "titile" box. Click "save" at the bottom of the page and then you are off and running - and we are able to help keep John employed.

Did that, Bob...

Like I said - Four Times.

Didn't work. When you open the thread the title of the post itself is changed, but it doesn't alter the topic section name of the post in the list.

Don't know why... :017:

Damn!

Go advanced sets the title for your post, not for the original post. A moderator/admin needs to change the title for the entire thread. Who's up to be a mod? :)

I don't wanna' be no stinkin' mod, Abhijeet, but...

Can you go into the "For Bob - To Avoid Him Having Withdrawal Symptoms (http://www.motorcyclistcafe.com/forums/showthread.php?t=361)" post and add an NSFW warning for me?

Here's the post:

I honestly don't want to cause problems for folks like John (R4R&R).

Thanks!

Perhaps its time to create the new section for NSFW content suggested earlier. While that won't help with threads that morph into NSFW, its a start.

If by moderator, you only want someone to give you hand moving threads when requested, I'd be willing. I don't think we're close to agreement on any other functions for a moderator at this point.
